Jennifer McClure self quarantine with her daughter. Staying To see more of Jennifer’s work click here. Creative in the time of by Licia Morelli 2020 proved to be a year of the great creative pivot. What could have been a time of stalemate to the artist’s process became a time of reinvention, a time of tending to the small things and a new understanding of what’s happening under the roof of our own homes. As the world began its shift towards a great pause and stillness, artists had to look around their immediate surroundings and remember, as photographer Aline Smithson says, “The world is a lot bigger than you imagine just looking at home.” Since Covid-19, many photographers and artists have taken to capturing the essence of what it’s like to be in their personal spaces. Watching and witnessing in new ways, ways that may not have appeared had quarantine not arrived. From window portraits and familial life, to protests and home projects, photography today creates a narrative around who we are as a society right now. It’s revealing the simplicity of our times, the heartache of our isolation and the wonder at the quiet that can surround our days. Smithson reminds us that, “This kind of work, if you think of it in the historical context...the Library of Congress might be really interested in this kind of documentation of what people are doing in this moment of time in a realistic way.” Work that captures the small moments in our days so that we can remember, our children can remember and society can remember what it was like to live in this piece of history. In a sense, photography feels like it’s dawning a new age with new processes being revealed, invented and created. Smithson’s interest in these perspectives lends itself helpful as she readies to judge the upcoming Maine Media College + Workshops Rania Matar’s “Ava, Hingham, Massachusetts” Window Portrait. Portraiture, an annual $20,000 prize gifted to a photographer To see more of Bernd’s work click here. whose work demonstrates a compelling new vision in photographic portraiture. It seems fitting to have a judge like Smithson for a prize of this nature, someone viewing work that surely will be submitted from recent months and has a lens of curiosity around how we can break out of what once was to what now is and how we, as artists, can illuminate the beauty and intimacy of our times. I can only imagine the submissions as they arrive this month. The narratives around each photographer’s recent experience or, in some cases, submissions that may have ominously predicted where we have been headed all along towards these strange times. Art is funny that way, the unseen revealed through a lens ultimately tethering us to home, quarantine or not. Maine Media Workshops + College Announces Jon Henry as the recipient of 2020 Arnold Newman Prize One of the Nation’s Largest in the World of Photographic Portraiture About Jon Henry Jon Henry is a visual artist who works with photography and text. He is from Queens, NY and currently living in Brooklyn. His work has been published both nationally and internationally and exhibited in numerous galleries including Aperture Foundation, Smack Mellon, and BRIC among others. Known for the cultural activism in his work, his projects include studies of athletes from different sports and their representations. About Strange Fruit In this series, Jon Henry photographs mothers with their sons in their environment, reenacting what it must feel like to endure this pain. “The mothers in the photographs have not lost their sons, but understand the reality that this could happen to their family,” Henry explains. “The mother is also photographed in isolation, reflecting on the absence. When the trials are over, the protesters have gone home and the news cameras gone, it is the mother left. Left to mourn, to survive.” The title of the project is a reference to the song “Strange Fruit.” Instead of black bodies hanging from the Poplar Tree, “these fruits of our families, our communities, are being killed in the street.” Congratulations to the 2020 Awards Ceremony The Griffin Museum of Photography Arnold Newman Prize Finalsists.
