CONGRATULATIONS!! Judy O’Dell receives her MFA Diploma on Campus Judy Describes her Maine Media College Experience There is a thread I follow. Why did I want to enroll in a program to earn a degree I don’t need for any practical purpose in my late 60s? The thread came attached to the camera I received for my eighth birthday, and I have had a camera in my hands ever since. I retired from my CPA firm in 2001 and began spending more time at our home in Rockport. I took advantage of my proximity to Maine Media and enrolled in over twenty workshops since my first one in 2000. I enjoyed the workshops, respected the instructors, but my work looked like theirs at the end of each week. I knew I needed to find my own voice. After a project workshop with Arlene Collins, she and Elizabeth Greenberg encouraged me to apply to the MFA program. I knew that once I started, I would not be making the journey alone. My faculty mentors pushed and inspired me to produce work that surprised me. My academic projects led me into worlds I didn’t know existed. I learned to speak and write about my work. Maine Media College offered me the freedom to purse my interests within the rigor of the MFA curriculum. Best of all, my fellow students/artists, whose work ranges over all aspects of visual storytelling, offered support and friendships that will last a lifetime. Judy’s thesis project, Goose River Field Notes, is a hardcover nine-inch by twelve-inch book combining her photographs and field notes.
