OUT | DESTINATION tigmi tradingSPACEWELOVE Have we hit peak Berber yet? Never, say the owners of Australia’s most interesting Moroccan and STurkish furniture retailerome businesses just feel good. Like people, they develop their own personalities. Tigmi Trading is a prime example – it’s like an incredibly chic, well-travelled friend whose passion for design is infectious. The company began as a fledgling online business, offering a collection of Moroccan and Turkish vintage and contemporary rugs that were hand-selected by owners Danielle McEwan and Julian Packshaw on their regular Moroccan pilgrimages. In the years since Tigmi Trading was imagined, the Australian obsession with hand-loomed rugs from the High Atlas mountains has fortified, and the time had come for a purpose-built flagship store. Cue the new Tigmi emporium in Byron Bay. Initially it was dark and uninspiring, a blank canvas in a modern conversion of a 1990s besser-block building on an industrial estate. But not any more. “We wanted to create a space that could be functional but also showcase our pieces in our own unique way and allow them to breathe,” explains Danielle. “And the relationships we have been able to cultivate with our clients through the showroom experience have brought so much more to our brand.” 152 | INSIDE OUT

“The steel doors are our nod to the Mediterranean and allow light to flood in” DANIELLE McEWAN, CO-OWNER CLOCKWISE (from opposite, top left) Tigmi Trading co-owner Danielle McEwan at an Organic Round dining table on a reissue of the Jeanneret chair. Moroccan meets Mediterranean at the Byron showroom. The entrance’s tiled counter and textured wall. A mix of Puglian ceramics on denHolm shelves with Brutalist Timber chair. Audoux Minet chairs and Caprani lamp. Hanging Lyrebird Beni Ourain rug and Farmhouse stools. The space was designed by Danielle and Julian, with some style injections from Steven Clark of denHolm. “I kept referring back to some of my favourite spaces in the industrial areas of Milan and Paris, those wonderful old buildings that have the patina of age on the outside and then open up to reveal a beautiful collection of pieces within,” says Danielle. “Obviously, our besser-block building had none of those original ‘charming’ characteristics, so we had a crack at creating that in a modern and playful way.” With the extra space, the range has also expanded, with many more beautiful objects to eyeball.“We launched the showroom with a collection of vintage pieces and iconic reissues – a hand-picked mix of furniture from the likes of the Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret, French designer Pierre Paulin and Jan Ekselius, whose seating is the epitome of retro cool.” Shoppers will find brutalist sculptures in the mix, along with shapely floor lamps, tableware and hand-cast bronze cabinetry pulls. “We’re constantly introducing layers of interesting and consciously sourced pieces from everywhere, so that locally made Soft Edge ceramics sit next to pieces by Italian artisans. We have Moroccan pots and artworks... there’s a lot to love!” Tigmi Trading is in Byron Bay, NSW; tigmitrading.com WORDS ELIZA O’HARE PHOTOGRAPHY ALICIA TAYLOR

LAST WORD colour riot ADesignStudio gives sculptural lighting a brave new function Artist Dina Broadhurst recently collaborated with ADesignStudio to give the label’s Basel F1 floor lamp a vibrant new ability. While the lamp’s signature minimal form remains untouched, the light it gives off can now be customised to emit bold hues in a more evolved version called the Basel Colour Special. “Light and colour have the ability to affect the mood of a space; we have a sunset edition in the office right now,” says studio founding director Alex Fitzpatrick, “and even on a rainy day, the light gives me a sense of calm and relaxation.” Priced from $2225. adesignstudio.com.au 154 | INSIDE OUT WORDS LAURA BARRY PHOTOGRAPHY ROHAN VENN
