Storyteller’s Corner The War of the Fox and the Wolf In a cottage at the edge of a wild forest lived a man named Simon and his wife Susan. She was a kind person, but Simon was mean and selfish. The couple owned two pets. Tibbles the cat had once been an excellent mouse-catcher but was now old and part-blind. She preferred snoozing in front of the fire to chasing rodents in the chilly barn. Around the World Tales The Watermelon Prince Many hundreds of years ago, a fierce storm struck the kingdom of Vietnam. Mighty gales blew a ship onto a reef, where it sank. Everybody on board was lost – except for a baby boy, who floated ashore in a basket. The baby was found by a fisherman’s wife, who took the child to the king of Vietnam. The king thought that the baby boy must be specially blessed if he survived the shipwreck, so he raised him as his son and named him Mai An Tiêm. The boy was given fine clothes to wear, ate food from the king’s table, and was taught by the wisest scholars, but he was always humble and hard- working, and the king cared for him as if he were his own son. The king loved Mai An Tiêm so well that he married him to one of his daughters.

Tales from Today Moving day W hen Isaac’s parents told him that they were moving again, he was unhappy – but he was also not surprised. He and his family had already moved from Birmingham to Kazakhstan to Florida and then to the Aldrin Crater Moon Base, and he was tired of having to pack up and leave his friends behind every time his parents got new jobs. Isaac put all his things into moving crates… his books, his paint set, his X-Station with Virtual Reality Module, Mr. Ringo the toy lemur, and of course his Cosmic Challengers action figures. Favourite Fairy Tales Kisa The Cat Once upon a time in Iceland, there was a queen who lived in a far-off castle on a hill, and her best friend was a cat called Mira. Mira was beautiful, with silky grey fur and glowing blue eyes, and she had a kitten named Kisa, who was coloured just the same. Yet the queen was sad, and she told Mira, “You are so lucky, for you have beautiful Kisa to play with, but I have no child.” So Mira sneaked out of the castle, and visited a fairy that lived in a high rocky place. Mira asked if the fairy could help her mistress have a child, so the fairy cast a spell… and some months later the Queen gave birth to a baby daughter she named Ingibjorg. 24

Ingibjorg and Kisa became the best of friends. Together they ran around the castle and played pouncing games in the garden. When Ingibjorg grew tired and fell asleep, Kisa curled up on her like a fluffy grey blanket. However, one day Kisa disappeared and nobody could find her. Little Ingibjorg was so upset that she couldn’t stop crying, and the Queen told her servants to turn the castle upside down to find the kitten and promised a reward for whoever found her. The servants searched all the rooms of the castle, opened every drawer that could hold a kitten, and checked every cellar and attic, yet Kisa could not be found. Some years passed. Mira the cat died of old age, and as Ingibjorg grew older she forgot her kitten friend. One hot summer’s day, Ingibjorg went with her servants for a picnic in the shady woods beyond the castle. After they had eaten, the servants grew drowsy and fell asleep on the grass, so Ingibjorg took the chance to go exploring deeper into the woods. 25

salt into the soup bubbling over the fire! Can you spot these 5 things in the scene? Qb[dna]Zir]mqa]hsioƄh\\na]g. Answer: There are 5 pairs of shoes.

The giants soon grew hungry and gobbled down big bowls of the soup, but it was so salty that it made them dreadfully thirsty. “Something’s wrong with your soup, wife! Do you want to poison me? I’m getting a drink from the river!” grumbled the giant. “Me first!” yelled the lady giant. “You might drink the river dry!” When the two giants stomped out, Kisa took Ingibjorg’s feet and some magic thread that was lying on the table. Kisa returned to the tiny cottage where Ingibjorg still slept. Using the magic thread, the clever cat sewed Ingibjorg’s feet back on so they were as good as new. The princess was so happy when she awoke and saw her feet that she danced around and hugged Kisa and promised that she would never let them be apart again. Kisa took Ingibjorg back to the castle, and the queen was so happy to see her dear daughter again that she promised Kisa the cat anything she wanted. 30

Kisa looked at her with her big blue eyes and said, ‘I just want to sleep for a night at the bottom of Ingibjorg’s bed.” The queen was amazed, but let Kisa onto Ingibjorg’s bed, and the cat and the princess fell asleep together like when they were young. When Ingibjorg awoke, she was shocked to see that instead of her cat at the foot of her bed, there was a beautiful young woman with blue eyes and silver hair. The stranger spoke: ‘Do not be afraid my sister, it is I, your dear Kisa. Many years ago my mother and I were turned into cats by an evil witch, but doing a good deed by saving you from the giants has broken the spell! My mother is gone, but I can be with you in my true form, my dear friend!” Ingibjorg hugged Kisa, and they remained as close as sisters for the rest of their lives.

Famous Fables The Fly and the Moth One day a fly was buzzing lazily around the kitchen, weaving through the sunbeams and sniffing all the delicious things there were to smell. “What do I feel like eating today?” he thought. “Daddy’s stinky running shoes by the door have an interesting smell… and what’s this? Jem hasn’t emptied the rubbish bin again – there must be lots of old fruit and vegetable peelings getting nice and rotten in there…” Then the fly smelled something that was different and delicious. Something sweet and tasty. He couldn’t believe his many eyes: someone had left a jar of honey open on the kitchen table! The fly buzzed down to the very edge of the jar and licked a bit. It tasted even better than it smelled! The fly began eating more and more of the delicious golden honey and went further and further into the jar to gobble greedy gooey mouthfuls. 32

However, when the fly was full and tried to fly away, he found that the honey was all over his legs, and he was now stuck! The fly did his best to escape, buzzing and flapping his wings as hard as it could – but it was no use. When evening came, the moth yawned, stretched her fuzzy wings, and decided it was time to flap around a bit. When she flew into the kitchen, she saw the honey pot on the kitchen table, with the fly still stuck inside. The moth fluttered down near the jar so she could make fun of the fly. “What are you doing in that honey, you silly little fly? Your problem is that you’re too greedy! You should think with your brain and not your stomach!” The fly was feeling angry, but he couldn’t think of anything clever to say. 33
