Director’s Notes In this action-packed adaptation of the classic adventure story, precocious Mowgli grows up believing he's as erce a wolf as any of the members of his pack. Whenhe learns he is actually a human, he must discover howto reconcile these very different identities, and decidewhether to remain with the pack, or return to thehuman world from which he was born. What will heLchoose? And will he be trained in the Laws of theJungle in time to defeat Shere Khan, the most fearedanimal of all? Allow yourself to step into the daringDworld of the jungle and become apart of their world.I have to say, this year's group of students haveBrejuvenated my passion for directing. e cast andcrew are truly amazing and they inspire me every day.Candace HarrisDirector Page 3

The Jungle Book HISTORY OF THE STORYe well-known book, “e Jungle Book”, waspublished in 1894, and its sequel, “e SecondJungle Book”, came a year later during the timewhen Rudyard Kipling, the author, wasensconced at Brattleboro in Vermont. e story RUDYARD KIPLINGtells of the child Mowgli who is a foundlingbrought up by wolves. He learns over time and due to theinstructions of various animal mentors the rules or Laws ofthe Jungle. Key gures are the wise black panther, Bagheera,Land Baloo, the sleepy bear. Both of these friendly beastscontribute to the child’s education. We learn about the greatenmity between Mowgli and the tiger Shere Khan who, in theDoriginal story, kille dthe boy’s parents. Like “Just So Stories(1902)” it portrays the natural world and especially itscreatures in a logical anthromorphized manner, entertainingBto adult and child alike. e simplicity of the concept and thelack of didactic moral overtones have made “e JungleBook” a lasting in uence on the young. 1ST EDITION COVERS OF THE JUNGLE BOOK & THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK Page 5
