Director’s Notes A er the excitement of the success of last year’s musical, e 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, many students wanted to undertake another musical during the 2018-2019 season and it was time to enter in for an HEB Foundation Grant. I was reluctant to do another musical because, whether people want tobelieve it or not, it’s hard to do a musical without a musical director. LexiMurphy spoke up and said she would be interested in working on musicaldirection a er she graduated from Bell. So, as a freshman in college, she getsLto musically direct a high school musical. I was still reluctant. I was chattingwith Nathan Gri n and Lauren Hill about possibilities and Nathan and Ithought Avenue Q High School Version was a great choice (still notappropriate for L.D. Bell High School), but Lauren was stuck on LegallyDBlonde. On the premise that I’d rather eat toe nails, Legally Blonde was out!Addams Family took too many people. Little Shop took way to many builders. So, Lauren finally came to me with this crazy sounding musical called BeBMoreChill. Isaid,“What?” When I first read the storyline for Be More Chill, it didn’t sound likesomething I would buy into, but as I listened to the music and read the script,I realized that there was a deeper meaning waiting to be told. Teenagers havee Award Winningsuch a longing to be accepted and their struggle to fit into society weighs onBellTheatrethem heavily as they are growing into adults. So, Lauren had found a musical that made me cave in and it has to do withwhat I do - teaching kids that it’s okay to be themselves and how to becomesuccessful without having to pretend to be something they are not. About The Play ere are no perks to being a wallflower for Jeremy Heere, a high school loser just trying tomake it through the day as he dodges bullies and popular kids. His best friend Michaelconvinces him to sign up for the school play to be close to his crush, artsy Christine, but Jeremylacks the confidence to talk to her. A er rehearsal, the school bully, Rich, reveals the secret of hisown popularity: he has a S.Q.U.I.P., a tiny ingestible supercomputer that lives in his brain andtells him how to be cool. For the right price, Jeremy can have one too. Later, Jeremy and Michael play video games as they debate the reality of this information. Atthe Menlo Park Mall, they buy a S.Q.U.I.P. in the backroom of a Payless shoe store. Jeremyswallows it with Mountain Dew, which activates it, and the S.Q.U.I.P. appears in his mind toinstruct him on how to interact with his peers. It works, and Brooke, a popular girl, o ersJeremy a ride home, but he refuses in order to stay with Michael. e S.Q.U.I.P. informs Jeremythat he has to follow all of the S.Q.U.I.P.’s commands in order to become popular.Le next day in school, Jeremy’s status has already improved. To his delight, Christine seemsto have noticed the change in him too, but she’s already dating super-stud Jake. e S.Q.U.I.P.tells Jeremy that to get Christine, he has to upgrade his popularity by dating Brooke andignoring Michael. Despite sinister omens, Jeremy takes the upgrade. A few weeks later, the cool kids are at the biggest bash of the fall: Jake’s Halloween party.DJeremy, under the guidance of the S.Q.U.I.P., has risen in social status and the most popular girlin school, Chloe, tries to seduce him. Caught in the act by Brooke and Jake, who is Chloe’s ex,Jeremy hides in a bathroom where he finds Michael, who has discovered some disturbinginformation about the S.Q.U.I.P.. Convinced he’s just jealous, Jeremy rejects the warning andBcallsMichaela loser. Alone, Michaelmourns thelossof hisbestfriend. e next day, school gossip Jenna Rolan spreads the news that, at the end of the party, Richset a fire and burned down Jake’s house. Suspicious, Jeremy confronts his S.Q.U.I.P., whoassures him that Rich’s behavior wasn’t due to his S.Q.U.I.P. but in spite of it. He convincesJeremy that his peers would be happier with S.Q.U.I.P.s of their own. e Award Winninge night of the play, Jeremy fights with his Dad, a sad sack who has given up on wearingpants since his wife le . Unable to reach his son, Dad enlists Michael’s help. Backstage, Jeremyo ers Christine a S.Q.U.I.P., but her refusal makes him re-think the S.Q.U.I.P.’s plan. As theBellTheatreS.Q.U.I.P. takes over the play, Jeremy fights back, as Michael arrives with the one thing that candeactivate it: Mountain Dew Red. e S.Q.U.I.P.ed students attack, spilling all but the last drop.Jeremy is about to drink it when Christine arrives, newly S.Q.U.I.P.ed, to say she loves him.Horrified, Jeremy gives her the bottle. She drinks it ... and emits a sonic scream that short-circuits all the S.Q.U.I.P.s. Jeremy wakes in the hospital next to Rich, who now has a lisp and has reverted back to hisnerdy, bisexual self without his S.Q.U.I.P.. Jeremy, also S.Q.U.I.P.-less and in pain, is convincedChristine will never like him. With advice from his Dad, who is now wearing pants, Michael,Rich, and the cool kids, Jeremy realizes that there will always be voices in his head telling him todo things, but he just has to listen to his own. He asks Christine out, and she says yes. 8
