Director’s NotesIn 2015, the Woodlands High School presented e 25th Annual Putnam CountySpelling Bee at espian Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska. Fortunately, a Bell eatrestudent qualified for Nationals that year and we had the opportunity to see thisproduction. I had heard of this production before, but who wants to watch a musicalabout a spelling bee? Watching this production was so much fun and it opened my eyesto new opportunities, but like all productions, you have to have the cast and crew to beable to even produce the show. It only took two years and here we are. is is the firstmusical that Bell has produced in 11 years and the participating students could not behappier to be able to be part of such a rewarding show for the audience and thedepartment.Ever since its origins as a small, experimental, non-musical play calledLC R E P U S C U L E, e 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has been acontinuing exploration into finding character and building upon these amazing roles.Work-shopped heavily in its early days, the original cast developed and shaped the basicsof the participants of the Bee, adult and child participants alike. When William Finn andRachel Sheinkin added the amazing score and book to the show, the roles flourished andDcontinue to do so to this day. It’s been said that no one writes more heartfelt, character-driven music than William Finn. His scores for Falsettos, A New Brain, Elegies, and LittleMiss Sunshine are a testament to this – and with Putnam County he knocks it out of thepark, exploring how these word-nerds have been shaped and breaking our hearts in theBsecondact. e cast and crew of Putnam County have taken this responsibility further and further –every rehearsal sees new character flourishes, fun new moments, and Aristotles’ idea ofspectacle gleams and sparkles in the e ects presented on the L.D. Bell stage. e showchanges every night based on what our guest spellers – recruited nightly from thatBellTheatreperformance’s audience – do. e opportunities for ad-libbing and sharing new andexciting quips and moments are ongoing. is is indeed a di erent show every eveningand takes a team of actors, singers, dancers, and technicians that are always ready totackle any number of unforeseen situations.Candace My deepest thanks to the cast and crew that have assembled to create this show. Some familiar faces, many brand-new ones, all a part of the amazing experience we call theatre. ank you for sharing and greatly expanding upon my vision. Candace Harris, Director

About The PlayAn eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives at the 25th Annual PutnamCounty Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very di erent reasons. Sweetand shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to thebee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfée uses his “magic foot”to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with hisburgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’ssmart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed byher consistent success; and politically aware LogainneSchwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. Inhilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition.LWith an engaging, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet, funnybook by Rachel Sheinkin, e 25th Annual Putnam County SpellingBee will make you fall in love, both with the show itself and its“perspicacious,” “jocular,” and “e ervescent” spellers. DYou are forever my baby girl. You are a Bblessing, you have bloomed to a beautiful talented young lady. I am so very proud of your strength and grace BellTheatrethat has led you to fulfill the accomplishments you have achieved thus far. Your future is blessed, keep looking up and may your light shine brighter! I Love You! Mom
