The Hurdlz Jump Academic Hurdle Jump A Toddler’s Approach English Language Centre Taif University Branch 2018/19
2018/19 1
The Hurdlz Jump Program Outline Weak students are at a complete loss at times when confronted with the English language. They have no references to turn to, nor can they identify landmarks in what seems to be a complete foreign land to them. They can't read a map to locate their starting point from where they want to go. In fact, they don't even know where they should go, let alone where they want to go. The Hurdlz Program has been designed to focus on weak students and train them, so they may jump English linguistic hurdles. Enrolled students will follow an adapted EAP course that will extend their reach and enable them a pass at their mainstream exams. The program will be launched on Sunday, September 23rd, 2018 and will run during semester 1 of the academic year 2018/2019. It shall span 8 weeks and will conclude on Thursday, November 29th, 2018. The program will serve both morning and afternoon shifts to cover a day’s long activity and offer its services to morning and afternoon mainstream REAP 1 & 2 schedules at TAIF University and its branches. Depending on their university’s mainstream schedules, students enrolled in the “Hurdlz Program” will attend either a morning or an afternoon shift. These will be identified by the following names and colors. Morning shifts shall be called: Sunrise Shift. Afternoon shifts shall be called: Sunset Shift. Hurdlz weeks are composed of 4 days. Each day will be dedicated to a single skill, and thus cover the four skills every week. Daily shifts will consist of 3 sessions of study per day, called “Tutorials” (See diagram below). The following diagram is a typical sample shift that displays sessions’ organization for The Sunrise Group. As an example, only Sundays and Mondays have been used to show a typical skill scheduled to be taught over 3 tutorials of 50 minutes each, for 3 different groups of students. The same material will be taught over the 3 2018/19 2
tutorials. This is considered a session. Only the groups change and will be identified by the abbreviations set as symbols for recognition. Schedules and sessions may be altered to suit their context and campus. The Sunrise Shift S1 Sunday Tutorial - Listening S3 9 AM S2 11 AM 10 AM M1 Monday Tutorial - Speaking M3 9 AM M2 11 AM 10 AM The afternoon diagram should likewise display session’s organization for The Sunset Shift, bearing in mind the time switch. In which case, S1 will be scheduled at 1 pm, S2 at 2 pm and S3 at 3 pm, and so forth. Abbreviations have been used to identify the sequence of days, students’ groups and tutorials, for any given skill: “S” represents Sunday. “M” represents Monday. “T” represents Tuesday. “W” represents Wednesday. “1” represents the 1st tutorial and the 1st group of students. “2” represents the 2nd tutorial and the 2nd group of students. “3” represents the 3rd tutorial and the 3rd group of students. The schedule illustration from the above diagram indicates the following: “S1” represents “Sunday Tutorial 1”. “S2” represents “Sunday Tutorial 2”. “S3” represents “Sunday Tutorial 3”. “M1” represents “Monday Tutorial 1”. “M2” represents “Monday Tutorial 2”. “M3” represents “Monday Tutorial 3”. Relevant abbreviations should be used accordingly for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, for the rest of the week. There are no activities scheduled for Thursdays. However, different campuses may decide to schedule this day for their activities to suit their context and reach the number of recommended hours for the program. 2018/19 3
Students will only take 32 hours of adapted EAP material for this course. Each student will attend 4 hours per week. For example: a student belonging to group “S1” will study for 1 hour, every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 AM to 10 AM. Tutorials will therefore cater for all four skills. One skill per tutorial. A tutorial lasts 50 minutes. See diagram below: • Sundays • Mondays • 50 minutes • 50 minutes Listening Speaking Reading Writing • Tuesdays • Wednesdays • 50 minutes • 50 minutes Teachers selected to participate in the program will be identified as “Hurdlz Tutors” and should strive to provide their groups with alternative, simplified lesson plans. Teaching and delivery styles should translate the mainstream syllabus into an easy, straightforward coursework, adaptable to the frame of mind and the abilities of weaker students, with clear objectives leading to the same learning outcomes described in the mainstream course outline. Hurdlz coursework should be supported with Online Activities through CUP supplementary material or Blackboard LMS tool. (LMS = Learning Management System) 2018/19 4
