Kelly Mathews serves as a masterful tour guide throughthe history of one of King’s most notable landmarks, as sheexplores the lives, motives and impacts associated with it.Her story begins with Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, well-known forhis famed Casa Loma, his role in bringing hydroelectricityto Toronto and his service with the Queen’s Own Rifles ofCanada and his love for his first wife, Mary. But few peoplerecall that while he was piecing together his castle, literallystone by stone, in Toronto (between 1910 and 1914), he wasalso starting building Lake Marie, in King.Sir Pellatt amassed many individual parcels of land to createhis rural farm and estate, which he named Lake Marie afterhis first wife, Lady Mary Pellatt (née Dodgson). Built as aplace for weekend retreats, hunt events and summer socialsfor Sir Henry Mill Pellatt and his first wife, the Lake MarieEstate became a more oft-used residence, in 1923, whencircumstances forced them to vacate Casa Loma. The property switched hands several times and witheach successive master came a new purpose. The original1,214-acre estate was reduced in size and sold in sectionsto four different entities. Over the next century, the landtransitioned from indulging the social appetites of theDominion of Canada’s wealthy and ambitious to playing aleading role in early Catholic social action as a venue for theback-to-the-land settlement scheme.Once a place of respite for the rich, Lake Marie became aland of opportunity for the Catholic less fortunate. Duringthe Basilian occupation, Catholic families suffering from thegrips of the Great Depression, in Toronto, found salvationin King. Under the Basilians, Catholic leaders, laymen andclergy founded the Marylake Agricultural School and FarmSettlement Association, which operated from 1935 to 1942.In 1942, Augustinian Fathers (Ontario) Inc. purchased themajority of the original Pellatt land in King to establish theMarylake Augustinian Monastery and Shrine and continuedfarming it until 1998.While no longer used for agriculture, Marylake continues“to feed and fuel the soul under the current leadership ofthe Augustinians, who have been in residence for the past75 years.” Today, Marylake is a place of worship, respite, reflection and pilgrimage, featuring the world’s largestrosary path.
