กฎข้อ 1 กรยิ าตอ้ งสอดคลอ้ งกบั ประธานหลกั เทา่ นนั้ ไมใ่ ชส่ ว่ นขยายของประธาน Ex. The package of cigarettes is on the table.

กฎขอ้ 2 ถา้ กรยิ าของประโยคตามหลงั each, every, everybody, everyone, everything, someone, somebody, something, any, anything, anyone, anybody, no one, nobody, nothing, one, much, the other, another, either, neither กรยิ าของประโยคจะเป็นเอกพจน์ (Singular verbs) Ex. Much of the food has gone bad. Somebody has taken my shoes.

กฎขอ้ 3 ถา้ ประธานของประโยคคือ all, both, few (a few), many, several, some กรยิ าของประโยค จะเป็นพหพู จน์ (Plural verbs) Ex. All scouts are to report for duty at eight o’clock.

กฎขอ้ 4 ถา้ ประธานมี 2 ตวั หรอื มากกว่า และเช่อื มดว้ ย or, either….or, neither…nor, กรยิ าในประโยคจะ ใชต้ ามประธานตัวทอี่ ยู่ใกล้กรยิ าสุด Ex. Either your pen or my pen is missing.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 5 ถา้ ประธานของประโยคคือ the number of กรยิ าจะเป็นเอกพจน์ ถา้ ประธานคือ a number of กรยิ าจะเป็นพหพู จน์ คาวา่ people มีความหมายเป็นพหพู จน์ ดงั นน้ั กรยิ าเป็นพหพู จนด์ ว้ ย Ex. The number of students in the English class is limited. A number of books are on the shelves in the library.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 6 ถา้ ประธานของประโยคเป็นจานวนเงนิ ระยะทาง หรอื ระยะเวลาท่เี ป็นพหพู จน์ กริยาจะต้องเป็ นเอกพจน์ Ex. Fifty baht is enough for this suit. Two weeks is a long time to wait for my sister.

กฎขอ้ 7 คานามพวก collective nouns เชน่ group, herd, school, etc. กรยิ าในประโยคเป็น เอกพจน์ Ex. A herd of cows is grazing in the field.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 8 คานามนบั ไม่ได้ (Uncountable nouns) และนามนามธรรม (Abstract nouns) ท่เี ป็นประธาน ของประโยค กรยิ าจะใชเ้ ป็นเอกพจน์ Ex. Milk contains all the necessary nutritious elements. Swimming is a good exercise.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 9 ช่อื วิชาท่ีมีรูปเป็นพหพู จน์ เชน่ economics, mathematics, กรยิ าตอ้ งเป็ นเอกพจน์ ช่อื โรคท่มี ีรูปเป็นพหพู จน์ เชน่ Rickets (โรคกระดกู ผ)ุ , mumps (โรคคางทมู ) หมายถงึ โรค 1 โรค กรยิ าจงึ ตอ้ งเป็นเอกพจน์ ช่อื หนงั สือ วารสาร หนงั สือพิมพ์ กรยิ าใชเ้ ป็นเอกพจน์ ถา้ มีคาว่า series, news เป็นประธานตอ้ งการกรยิ าเอกพจน์ Ex. Economics was one of the subjects I liked. The New York Times is a daily newspaper in New York.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 10 คาบางคามีลกั ษณะการใชเ้ ป็นพหพู จนเ์ สมอ กรยิ าจงึ ตอ้ งเป็นพหพู จนด์ ว้ ย เชน่ scissors, trousers, slacks, shorts, eye-glasses Ex. Your new trousers are really trendy.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 11 ภาษาตา่ งๆ English, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, French และอ่นื ๆ ถา้ ทาหนา้ ท่ีเป็นประธาน จะใชก้ รยิ าเอกพจน์ Ex. English is my favourite subject. ขอ้ ยกเวน้ ถา้ ตอ้ งการบอกประชาชนในชาตนิ นั้ ๆ ใหเ้ ติม the หนา้ คาบอกภาษาและกรยิ าตอ้ งใชเ้ ป็นพหพู จน์ ดว้ ย เพราะหมายถงึ ประชาชนในชาติ Ex. The Chinese have an interesting history.

++เม่ือไรก็ตามท่เี ราเตมิ The หนา้ คาคณุ ศพั ท์ (The + adjective) จะหมายถงึ กลมุ่ คน คาพวกนี้ ไดแ้ ก่ the poor, the rich, the young, the blind, the deaf เป็นตน้ Ex. The poor have many problems. The blind are crossing the road.

กฎขอ้ ท่ี 12 การใช้ there is, there are จะเลือกวา่ จะใช้ there is, there are ใหด้ จู ากคานามท่ตี ามหลงั ถา้ คานามท่ตี ามหลงั เป็นเอกพจน์ ใหใ้ ช้ there is ถา้ คานามท่ตี ามหลงั เป็นพหพู จน์ ใหใ้ ช้ there are Ex. There is a cat under the table. There are speed boats in Chao Phraya River.
