August 6, 2023 10:00 a.m. Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost GOD’S PEOPLE GATHER Gathering Prelude Carol Hess “Sweet Hour of Prayer” By William Bradbury Arranged by Douglas E Wagner Ringing of the Church Bells Parish Notes Greeting: May you be filled with the Spirit of God as we come together to worship and sing praises to God our Creator and Jesus Christ our Lord and Redeemer! Introit Hymn of Preparation TFWS #2164 “Sanctuary” (sung twice) Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary, Pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living Sanctuary for you.

Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary, Pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living Sanctuary for you *Call To Worship Leader: Let us quiet our bodies and collect our thoughts. People: Let us open our minds to God and the teaching of Jesus. All: Let us be guided by the Holy Spirit now and always. Amen *Opening Hymn UMH#454 “Open My Eyes That I May See” Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! Open my ears, that I may hear

voices of truth thou sendest clear; and while the wavenotes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine! Open my mouth, and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere; open my heart and let me prepare love with thy children thus to share. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my heart, illumine me, Spirit divine! Morning Prayer: Gracious God, We come today and ask of your mercy. We have not always been the children you would want us to be – We have not always followed the teaching of your son and our Savior Jesus. Yet, your Mercy is ever flowing and unconditional. This hour fill us with that mercy and help us to live in and show that mercy to others in our daily lives. A-Men PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE

MORNING PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION: (Unison) Enlighten the eyes of our hearts, O God, and grant us a spirit of wisdom and revelation through the reading of this, your Word. Amen. Children’s Chat * HYMN OF PREPARATION UMH #467 “Trust and Obey” When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil he doth richly repay; not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. But we never can prove the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay; for the favor he shows, for the joy he bestows, are for them who will trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we'll walk by his side in the way; what he says we will do, where he sends we will go; never fear, only trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Gospel Reading Matthew 14:22-33

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

“Brightly Beams Our Father’s Mercy” Brightly beams our Father’s mercy From His lighthouse evermore; But to us He gives the keeping Of the lights along the shore. Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave! Some poor fainting, struggling seaman You may rescue, you may save. Dark the night of sin has settled, Loud the angry billows roar; Eager eyes are watching, longing, For the lights along the shore. Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave! Some poor fainting, struggling seaman You may rescue, you may save. Trim your feeble lamp, my brother! Some poor seaman, tempest-tossed, Trying now to make the harbor, In the darkness may be lost.
