April 16, 2023 10:00 a.m. GOD’S PEOPLE GATHER Gathering Prelude “How Firm a Foundation” Traditional American Melody arranged by Don Hustad Ringing of the Church Parish Notes Invocation *Call To Worship Leader: It’s the Sunday after Easter and we are alone in our faith; People: On this Sunday after Easter, help us grow into the faith that we confessed and celebrated last week. Leader: Though we have hidden ourselves in a locked room and huddled together as ones who build barriers; People: Send your Living Word through our locked doors and into our guarded hearts that we might be witnesses of your grace and couriers of your goodness.
Leader: By the power of your Holy Spirit, grant us the trust to believe the Gospel; People: Not because we see it but because we have been seen by it and transformed through it. *Opening Hymn UMH #318 “Christ Is Alive” Christ is alive! Let Christians sing. His cross stands empty to the sky. Let streets and homes with praises ring. His love in death shall never die. Christ is alive! No longer bound to distant years in Palestine, he comes to claim the here and now, and conquer every place and time. Not throned above, remotely high, untouched, unmoved by human pains but daily, in the midst of life, our Savior with the Godhead reigns. In every insult, rift and war, where color, scorn or wealth divide, he suffers still, yet loves the more, and lives, though ever crucified.
Christ is alive, and comes to bring good news to this and every age, till earth and sky and ocean ring with joy, with justice, love and praise. Children’s Chat GOD’S WORD PROCLAIMED Prayer for Illumination: (in unison) Living Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, and retain them, that we may ever hold fast to the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Gospel Reading John 20:19-31 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Jesus Appears to Thomas Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. The Lord’s Prayer UMH#895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Reception of the Tithes and Offerings *Doxology UMH#94 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
*Offertory Prayer (unison) Holy God, you treat us not like the stern disciplinarian but like the forgiving parent who runs to embrace us when we’ve rebelled or disappointed. Your mercy gives us the openings to try again, to return into your grace, to pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off. You invite us back into the inheritance you desire for us. May our offering this day reflect our gratitude for your pardoning love. Amen. GOD’S PEOPLE ARE SENT FORTH *Hymn of Sending Forth UMH#307 “Christ Is Risen” Christ is risen! Shout Hosanna! Celebrate this day of days. Christ is risen! Hush in wonder; all creation is amazed. In the desert all surrounding, see, a spreading tree has grown. Healing leaves of grace abounding bring a taste of love unknown. Christ is risen! Raise your spirits from the caverns of despair. Walk with gladness in the morning.
See what love can do and dare. Drink the wine of resurrection, not a servant, but a friend; Jesus is our strong companion. Joy and peace shall never end. Christ is risen! Earth and heaven never more shall be the same. Break the bread of new creation where the world is still in pain. Tell its grim, demonic chorus: \"\"Christ is risen! Get you gone!\"\" God the First and Last is with us. Sing Hosanna everyone! *Benediction *Choral Benediction UMH# 310 “He Lives (v2)” In all the world around me I see His loving care And though my heart grows weary I never will despair I know that He is leading Through all the stormy blast The day of His appearing Will come at last
