BETHEL AME HOMELESS SHELTER UPDATE (located at 716 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, PA) The Bethel AME Homeless Shelter in Scranton is seeking helpfrom our communities. The most urgent need is for volunteers tostaff the shelter, specifically, from 6-10pm each evening.Volunteers are responsible for registering people when they arrive, administering a breathalyzer test, overseeing the shower schedule, assisting guests as they settle in for the evening, and simplehospitality. That 6-10 pm crew usually numbers 3-5 people. People are also needed to work in the shelter overnight from10pm to 8am providing supervision and building security, includingobserving security monitors. Early morning responsibilities includeunpacking a simple grab & go style breakfast and supervising clientsas they pack up to leave for the day. Routinely, there are 3-5 peoplescheduled for the overnight. Men AND women volunteers areneeded each shift. Whether you can volunteer weekly or once ortwice a month – all help is appreciated! Having the background clearances (like those required for“Safe Sanctuaries” certification) is helpful but not required. If youare interested in observing firsthand the responsibilities involvedbefore committing, you can arrange to shadow more experiencedvolunteers during hours of operation.
