May 29, 2022 Ascension Sunday 10:00 a.m. GOD’S PEOPLE GATHER Gathering Prelude Prelude on “Melita” Ringing of the Church Bells By John B. Dykes arr by Roger C Wilson Parish Notes Invocation *Call To Worship Leader: In a world filled with aggression and war; People: We gather together to celebrate the promise of peace. Leader: In a world filled with tyranny and oppression; People: We gather together to celebrate the promise of justice for all.

Leader: In a world filled with hunger and greed; People: We gather together to celebrate the promise of plenty for all. All: Our hope is in the name of the Almighty God, the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of heaven and earth. *Opening Hymn UMH#696 “America the Beautiful” O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain; for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine, till all success be nobleness, and every gain divine. O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law. Children’s Chat GOD’S WORD PROCLAIMED Choral Prayer for Illumination: Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover peace. Amen.

New Testament Reading Isaiah 40 1-2;28-31 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Special Music Carol Hess “O, America” By Brendan Graham & William Joseph Arr. By James Kazik

Gospel Reading Luke 24:44-53 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God.

Message Pastor Lori Robinson Final Blessing GOD’S PEOPLE RESPOND *Hymn of Response UMH#710 “Faith of Our Fathers” Faith of our fathers, living still, in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword; O how our hearts beat high with joy whene'er we hear that glorious word! Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death. Faith of our fathers, we will strive to win all nations unto thee; and through the truth that comes from God, we all shall then be truly free. Faith of our fathers, holy faith!

We will be true to thee till death. Faith of our fathers, we will love both friend and foe in all our strife; and preach thee, too, as love knows how by kindly words and virtuous life. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Reception of the Tithes and Offerings

*Doxology UMH#94 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *Offertory Prayer (unison) Lord, we bring to the altar our offerings for your blessing. Grant us courage to experience the joy of deep generosity as we continue sharing our resources and reaching out to others. We pray this in the name of our Risen Savior, who thought the cross was not too great a price to pay for us. Amen. GOD’S PEOPLE ARE SENT FORTH *Hymn of Sending Forth UMH#697 “America” My country,' tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing; land where my fathers died,

land of the pilgrims' pride, from every mountainside let freedom ring! My native country, thee, land of the noble free, thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills; my heart with rapture thrills, like that above. Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees sweet freedom's song; let mortal tongues awake; let all that breathe partake; let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong. Our fathers' God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing; long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light; protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

*Benediction *Choral UMH#717 “Battle Hymn of the Republic (v 1&5)” Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; he hath loosed the fateful lightning of his terrible swift sword; his truth is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, he is wisdom to the mighty, he is honor to the brave;

so the world shall be his footstool, and the soul of wrong his slave. Our God is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. *Postlude “Fanfare” By R. Mark Otterstad * Invites the congregation to stand if able.
