FOREWORD by:- HEAD ISAP Dear Acorns, We at Silver Oaks believe in grooming acorns who will “Live for a purpose Learn to apply Lead with determination and Leave a timeless legacy” Learning is a lifelong process. It is neither limited to school nor reflected through only report cards and marks. Aim to strive for excellence in whatever you do in your life. In the current economic scenario, we often discuss the future of work and skills. With the automation of repetitive work due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence and other technological advancements, it is imperative for young learners like you to stay put with a growth mindset and be ready to brace up the challenges around you. This can be achieved only when you develop the zeal to keep learning throughout your life. We sincerely believe that along with the attributes and attitudes imbibed through your PYP journey, you are now assimilating the 7 habits of highly effective people in the ISAP wing. I congratulate the editorial board on its tireless effort in bringing out this edition of Milestone 21-22. This academic year was a roller coaster ride with so many challenges of online/offline/hybrid mode of teaching and learning. But we all tried our level best to continue the momentum of learning and this is worth celebrating! May you all grow up to be global citizens who believe in equality of all and display the highest level of integrity in your character. With warm wishes, Dr. Kavita Karki Head ISAP

FROM THE POV OF GRADE 7

EXPERIENCE HYBRID MODE The last two years played havoc on people from all walks of life. The most challenging thing was people were trying to somehow grapple with the situation the pandemic posed. It was a situation no one knew the answers to. Undoubtedly the whole world came to a standstill. In my opinion, students were most affected. Since we are the future, we are the ones who will lead our country tomorrow. This was well understood by my school and we were introduced to online learning. This way of learning was new for us as well as for the teachers. It was a sudden change from the routine. As we were all sailing in the same boat, we supported each other by discovering new ways of learning. Our school came up with an option of a hybrid model where interested students could go to the school while others could stay back home and learn side by side... This was a bit confusing in the beginning but we could overcome this hurdle victoriously. Initially, for us online students, it was difficult to listen and hear properly whatever the teachers explained. She might walk away from the mic, or it might echo or the network was bad. Though there were so many internet glitches that would come up, we somehow coped. In other words, we were ready to face any turmoil. As they say, when life gives you a lemon, make lemonade. Despite the fact that the classes were challenging, they were also interesting and interactive. We were shown many interesting videos to make us understand the topics better, groups were formed where we could brainstorm, we played Kahoot online to track our knowledge.. The best part was when we all took part in a discussion. Nobody could have believed we were sitting so far away from each other. Clearly, the involvement from the teachers and us was mind-boggling. According to me, online learning has opened a lot of possibilities to improve the modes of learning. I personally find this very innovative and creative. It's just a matter of time before this mode will become the new norm. - Dhruv Kaniyath, Grade 7 - Manaslu

EXPERIENCE INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS Independence Day is the most important milestone in the history of our great motherland, India. It signifies the unshackling of the billions of people living in India in the past, as well as a stimulus for rapid development of our beloved country. Independence is such a strong word and belief that millions of freedom fighters were ready to give up their life for this word. We must always honor them for their courage and bravery, as it is why we are living in one of the best countries in the world. My school, SilverOaks International, respects the efforts put into making our country a free place. So, we acorns at SilverOaks get the privilege of participating in the Independence Day celebrations every year on August 15th. I personally think that this year’s Independence Day celebrations were the best of the lot. First, we watched an inspiring video by our Principal Ms. Seetha Murty ma’am and the Team@SilverOaks about the heritage and culture regarding the great day of August 15th. Then we watched the live flag hoisting and celebration events in the school. After that, the whole class watched the T.I.E. Independence Day videos that we all made. It was really inspiring to see the courageous and valiant freedom fighters fight for their dream of Independence, which was enacted by my classmates. And at the end of the day, we all played an amazing quiz on Independence Day and its significance, as well as about freedom fighters who fought for it. To conclude, I could confidently say that the Independence Day celebrations were the best celebration this year. It made me and my classmates feel Proud, that we are of Indian birth, and we felt Privileged to Honor those who made the dream of Independence a reality! - Dhruv Vihan.G, Grade 7, Dhaulagiri

EXPERIENCE THE SPORTS FEST The student government decided to hold a sports fest so that the students can find some time to relax as well as enrich their sports skills. So this fest was held for 2 days; on the 16th and 17th of December. We had both indoor and outdoor activities. The indoor activities were: Rubik's cube competition, Table tennis, Chess and Carrom board. The outdoor activities included: Badminton, Skating, Basketball, Running race, Football, Volleyball, Throw ball, Relay race, Tennis and Cricket. We were divided into 2 groups: - junior and senior. Juniors were students from grade 3 to 6 while the seniors were students from grades 7 to 12. In this fest, girls and boys were supposed to oppose each other separately. This event was held amongst the houses. We also had a dress code for each of our houses. We were expected to wear our t-shirts according to our house color. To participate in the fest, we first had to enroll ourselves in our favorite sport. Many people came to enroll themselves for the fest. The next day a qualifier round for the sports fest was conducted. By the end of the day, the names of the participants of each sport for the fest was given to them. On the day of our sports fest, the student government conducted the opening ceremony of the fest. President and vice president started marching in the green meadows with the school flag. It was then followed by the house captains and vice-captains marching with their house flags. After that the participants from each house walked towards the places where the banners of each house were kept. The audience then cheered for the players. The sports fest began. The audience supported the players representing their house. All the participants participated with great enthusiasm and competitive spirit. On the afternoon of day 2, the student government concluded the sports fest by distributing medals to the winners of each house. And finally the results were out. Tigers were leading followed by Tuskers, Whales and Hawks. We all have learnt something new after this sports fest. We all enjoyed cheering for the players and supporting the house too. Thanks to the student government for this wonderful opportunity. - Gurram Vahni, G7 Dhaulagiri

Experience 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE The 7 habits of highly effective people can be something life-changing. It can act as a key to success for an individual and can be crucial during the most challenging times. These habits have also helped me to get through this year and become better at all times. I would like to share my experiences while practicing these 7 habits during this year. Let us begin with the first habit of being proactive. Throughout the year, I have been proactive by preparing for my exams well in advance and timely uploading the tasks that are given to us. Next is to begin with an end in mind. Before we start any work, we should have an end goal in mind rather than doing it aimlessly. When we set an end goal, we can achieve what we want. This will help us reach greater heights in studies and other activities. I have applied this habit by making a to-do list in the morning, so that I can visualize what I want to accomplish by the end of the day. Then we have Put first things first One habit I think that has helped me the most is to Put first things first. It means to get done with the work that is currently the priority rather than doing things that are unnecessary at that moment. When we put first things first, we create a priority list and work accordingly. Throughout the year, I made sure that I did tasks which carry more priority. This has helped me to avoid last-moment jitters as I am able to submit assignments on time. Another habit that I think takes us a long way is-Think win-win The past couple of years have been challenging for everyone as many families were affected by covid, but the only thing on all of our minds was to ‘’Think win-win’’, hence it helped us to overcome the dire situation. Since I had faced the same kind of situation at home, I understand that having a collective approach in completion of any task can lead to better results hence victory of all the individuals involved. The fifth habit is Seek first to understand, then to be understood I admit it, during our lifetime we have had lots of misunderstandings between friends and family but, the lesson I've learnt from them is that, first we have to understand others and only then can we expect others to understand us .

The next habit that I imbibed in myself is to Synergize The habit I believe in the most is synergizing. It means to do things as a group and supporting each other at challenging times. It has helped me and my classmates to share our opinions freely and get to know one-another through meets and break-out sessions. The last but not the least is ‘’Sharpening the saw’’ It means to enhance our knowledge and skills. A saw used multiple times gets blunt, hence, we have to keep sharpening it. The same goes for our mind, we have to keep sharpening our skills and eventually improve in our skill-set. I’ve applied this habit by practicing everything taught to us and going beyond the classroom. In our school’s PYP (Primary Year Programme), we were taught how to apply Concepts, Attitudes, and Attributes. At first, entering the senior wing was very intimidating but, the 7 Habits served as a guide for us, and helped us have a smooth transition from PYP learning. Since we have entered the ISAP wing, the 7 Habits are a step further into becoming a highly effective person. - Soham Patnaik, Grade VII Makalu

EXPERIENCE PROJECT BASED LEARNING During the Academic Year of 2021-2022, the students of the ISAP Wing had numerous projects and activities to look forward to. One of those projects was PBL, Project Based Learning. PBL was a knowledge and skill based project which made us investigate authentic, engaging and creative problems, questions or challenges. It was conducted online and was a self-driven learning project. We could do it individually or in groups. We had occasional meetings with the project leader as well. The projects were segregated into different groups based on grade levels. A few examples of the projects for the ISAP Wing were Design Thinking and Endorphins Equilibrium. Other projects included were Project Grit, Theater and Communication and Digital Information. On the Tuesday of every week, the students of ISAP Wing would join meetings and discuss their chosen project and subsequently complete the assigned work for that week. We could talk with our Project Leader throughout the week and also could communicate and interact with other students through google groups. Project Based Learning enabled students to think critically about creative problems which can be answered in numerous ways. That was what made PBL different from other projects, it allowed students to collaborate to think outside the box to create new solutions and answers to problems. Project Based Learning helped students to acquire a deeper understanding through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. It is truly an experience that every ISAP student will remember forever. - Sai Srinika Ganga, 7th Mount Kailash

EXPERIENCE RUBIK'S CUBE COMPETITION The Rubik’s Cube is taking the world by Storm! It has gained popularity both as a fun toy, and an engaging mind conundrum. Speed cubing (The sport of solving a Rubik’s cube as fast as you can) is one of the Dark Horses in sports these days. Scientists say that Cubers’ hand - eye coordination has also improved by 59%! We acorns at SilverOaks were fortunate and privileged to have been given the opportunity to participate in the Rubik’s cube competition conducted by DPS Nacharam. First, we created Rubik’s cube ids, and we logged into the given site. We were informed that the scrambling algorithm for the cube will be released the following week. On the day of the scrambling algorithm release, we had to record videos of us scrambling the cube according to the given algorithm and solving it. Though I did not make it to the final round, it was certainly a thrilling and exciting experience, and I would love for the school to plan more exciting endeavors like this. - Dhruv Vihan.G, Grade 7, Dhaulagiri

Experience DIWALI - THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS It all started the day before the festival. My classmates and I were waiting for our Head ISAP - Kavita mam to announce that the following day we would begin with the diwali preparations, clean the floors, dust the walls and curtains and finally the exciting part, to decorate our classroom with flowers. We were asked to bring marigold flowers to decorate our classrooms. Some of us even brought daisies and roses. We all split roles that had needed to be done in groups for each one of us. For example, some of us were working on cleaning and dusting the classroom, while some were decorating the classroom with mango leaves and the marigold bundles which the others had made it weaving flowers using a long needle and a thread.. The boys weren’t much interesting in doing all this so our facilitator Nancy mam suggested them to draw diyas on chart papers and also make creative posters on diwali. My favorite part was making the flowers shaped like a diya on the bulletin board. Although we had bumpy starts we found ways to make the road smooth again by the next day. Making the rangoli was a bumpy start. We took out the excess petals and made a flower design on the floor using wet chalk. After filling it up with the rangoli colors, we used the marigold petals for the borders of the rangoli to make it more attractive. On arriving at school the next day, I was delighted to see everyone wearing colorful dresses and traditional attires ready to celebrate the festival of lights also known as DIWALI. We had a great time with some teachings and lots of games such as truth or dare, dumb charades, etc. At times while playing games the rangoli would get ruined, but my friends and I would instantly fix it as we knew the amount of effort we had poured in making it. This day was the best one ever after a long time, as I got to spend sufficient quality time with my school friends. I would say that time is a valuable thing which can never be replaced, so use it wisely and merrily. - Lakshmi Sahasra Pothineni, 7C KAMET

Experience MERRY CHRISTMAS! ❄❄ ❄ ❄ ❄❄ ❄ ❄

Experience MODEL UNITED NATIONS Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. While playing their roles as ambassadors, student “delegates” make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure – all in the interest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world. The essence of Model UNS lies in the three core skills this activity engages: Public Speaking, Researching, Lobbying. There will be “General Assembly'' committees, each student represents a specific country and participates in a specific committee (i.e., the Security Council, UNHRC, WTO, UNEP, UNESCO or the WHO etc). Also, “OPEN FORUMS” are conducted to discuss various chosen topics and present and speak your ideas on the topics. On 17th & 18th of July 2021, Concord Collective conducted MUN . The aim of the Open Forum is to discuss the policies, strategies and guidelines that must be followed by educational institutions as they gradually open up and resume their daily operations post pandemic. I had participated in the Open Forum and during its course, I was given the opportunity to speak on the chosen topic present my ideas and here are some excerpts from my speech : School closures are likely to have worsened educational inequalities, jeopardizing the attainment of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” I had elaborated on the topics - fate of primary school students, traveling to schools/colleges ,social distancing within schools, teachers and administration.

I was constantly involved in the proceedings by raising point of order & point of information and on the second day just before the closing hours the awards for different categories were announced and I was awarded “THE BEST 1st TIMER “award & the Best draft resolution paper where I signed as a signatory. I felt highly honored and thanked my parents & teachers for their encouragement and support in presenting my ideas at this MUN. MUN is a great platform where people can shed their inhibitions of public speaking. This chance to overcome a fear of public speaking is great because it supports delegates’ personal growth and triggers self-confidence. It also enhances our leadership skills, debating skills, creativity, collaboration, communication, international literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, flexibility, productivity, listening & Social skills. Being a delegate, I thoroughly enjoyed the MUN sessions and I would recommend my fellow students to participate at least one MUN session and get the feel of it. - SRIMAYI ORUGANTI, 7C KAMET

Experience SPEAKER @ SILVER OAKS \"If you can speak, you can influence. If you can influence, you can change lives.\" Speaking is the most essential life skill. Speaking is a skill that allows us to communicate effectively. They give us the ability to convey information verbally and in a way that the listener can understand. The purpose of having speaking competitions regularly? Our School’s Culture is to speak softly and pleasantly, feel good, look good and do good and have and show confidence. At Silver Oaks, language is essentially about communicating thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Our school's purpose of having Speaker@SO is to develop confident speakers who have clarity and depth in their ideas and thoughts, with fluency and right pronunciation, accurate usage of grammar, and good vocabulary. How Speaker@SO has been held this year Every year, our homeroom teachers give us a topic to speak about and we are given time to prepare and deliver a speech about it. This year, however, there was a website that was created in which our speaking rubric, purpose, tonality, speaking styles, and criteria were given. Every week, we gave a speech with the help of the pondering questions given in the site. Every week, we spoke about different UOI(Unit of inquiry) themes(Who we are, Where we are in place and time, How we express ourselves, and How we organize ourselves). But we don’t speak every time. We watched videos of students who are adequate speakers. We reflected on what we can avoid while delivering our speech by watching their videos titled “Baseline” and we tried to learn something we can implement while speaking from them by watching their videos titled “Exemplar”. After watching all the videos, we evaluated each one of the students and typed in our feedback.

ISAP EdX Every year, we have a competition called ISAP EdX. ISAP EdX is a platform for us young speakers to ignite our minds.ISAP EDx is a wonderful opportunity that provides young budding talented speakers to stimulate their oratory skills further. All in all, we got a wonderful opportunity to develop our public speaking skills. -Likitha, Grade VII Trisul

Experience SPORTS QUIZ Sports have a very special place in my heart. When my school said that we were going to have a sports quiz, I was really excited. Sports quizzes are very important in the current situation and this world where everything has become online. Sports quizzes bring to our knowledge - sports affairs, Different sports titles, Sportspeople and the spirit of sports. The purpose of this Sports quiz is to spread awareness about sports and encourage Students to participate in sports events. Events like this sports quiz instills a sense of sportsmanship In us and helps us learn the lessons of life. Last year, on August 6th 2021 we were informed that we were going to have a sports quiz competition. In the sports quiz there were 3 rounds. Interested students could attempt the 1st round which was a google form. Then on the 9th of august ,we received our results. I and 17 other students from grade 7 and 8. We were also given information regarding the round 2 of the sports quiz the following day. We had a demo round for round 2 and on August 11 Round 2 was conducted on the Quizzes platform. On August 14th our homeroom teacher announced the results for the 2nd round of the sports quiz. I was selected !!!! The 3rd round was to be conducted on August 27. But later it was postponed to 8th september 2021. Before the Quiz ,we were also notified that the last round was not only the final round but also an inter - school sports quiz. The hosts also give us an article to prepare from and to expect questions from it. The final round was supposed to have 50 questions which were divided into 10 rounds. And so all of us attempted the quiz….. So this quiz has given me a lot of knowledge and helped me understand the different affairs in sports. So I urge you all to participate in a sports quiz whenever you get the opportunity. It is a fun game as well as it gave me an opportunity to learn. -ABHAY LAKKOJU , Grade VII Trisul

Experience REFLECTION ON SPEAKER @SO Communication is an important and integral part of today’s life. Public speaking is one of the most effective forms of communication. It allows one to widen their thinking skills, enhance the ability to analyze any fact or information and most importantly persuade a broader audience. Being an acorn of Silver Oaks, S@SO provides us the perfect platform to become the master of this art of communication. In career advancement, one of the biggest obstacles is Glossophobia or fear of public speaking. A good speaker with adequate subject expertise is capable of motivating a mass. Our S@SO program helps us to become influencers, form connections and motivate change. A very important aspect of this idea is to express, to meaningfully convey our thoughts. The S@SO program makes us future ready, whether to present a thesis or a powerpoint presentation. Someone with good knowledge doesn’t guarantee him/her a good speaker. One needs to go through a systematic process in a step by step manner and our S@SO does exactly that. It helps to develop a holistic development of the personality in terms of confidence, knowledge and vocabulary. According to me, S@SO is one of the most notable curricula of Silver Oaks. ~ Saptak Bhattacharyya

Experience ACTIVITY CLUBS It was June 16, 2021, when the grade 7 had officially started. This year too we were continuing in our online mode school. So, I thought the whole year might be me just sitting in the corner of my bedroom, staring straight into a laptop, while listening to the classes. However, within a couple of days, we got a post in our GCR from our ISAP wing head, Kavitha ma’am announcing about the activity clubs. I was so excited to read about it, that my heart almost skipped a beat! I clicked on the website link, which offered a VARIETY of clubs to choose. I scrolled through it as fast as I could, reading all the detailed descriptions written for each club. I remembered that there were only a limited number of seats for every club; and that I had to register soon! My mindset was focused on choosing a sport rather than a club doing something related to the arts. Then, I saw it. The perfect club. Basketball Club! I gave another quick read about it, asked my family if they think it was a good idea, and with their support and approval I registered for it! As soon as I hit the register button, I let myself loose, slouching on the chair. Thinking about what a great opportunity we have to do a club of OUR choice every other day! It was a completely different experience to learn about the tactics and strategies about a particular game. The warm up exercises made us turn ourselves from couch potatoes into vibrant and bouncy ones. I thoroughly enjoyed these clubs. I think they helped us gain sufficient knowledge and strength by giving a break to our lethargic lives! - Lekha, 7C KAMET

Experience SILVEROAKS SCHOOL HOUSES Earlier this academic year, our school introduced houses. Our school divided all the students and teachers into 4 houses , which are :Tigers - Bravehearts , Tuskers- Path breakers , Hawks- Hawkeyes and Whales- Torchbearers. We were divided into our houses on the basis of our character and personality. Well ,after we all got divided into our houses, we got to know more and more about our houses and what does our house mean. Then the house was further divided into a pod and there were around 30 to 40 people in a pod. There we spoke to each other and shared our thoughts and feelings about various things related to our house. It was fun and we developed our communication skills. In the pod meetings, it didn’t matter which class or age we were.We freely shared our views and opinions with each other. To make our houses and our house participants more organized, the school conducted elections. The tradition of our school to conduct elections for Student Government is to motivate students to become leaders continued this year as well. The leadership roles were for Captains, Vice captains and Prefects for our houses and also President and Vice President of the student government. All the students participated in the voting process which truly upheld the values and principles of democracy . There were competitions between our houses, which was tough and exciting for all of us. There were different competitions like Rakshabandhan, Ramleela, Literacy fest, Green ,safe Diwali and Sports fest. Finally ,at last when all these competitions were over, the scoreboard was ready. Well, it didn’t matter who won or lost ,but that each acorn exhibited great sportsmanship . All in all,the main purpose of these houses is to communicate with each other and have a friendly competitive spirit. - N.V. ADITHYA, 7th Nanda Devi

Experience LEARNING JOURNEY OF SCIENCE Science is divided into three areas namely Biology, Physics and Chemistry. The main objective of these subjects is to study and try to understand the universe and everything in it and how we associate everything with our everyday life. All the authors of the books took a lot of effort in making the resource books of our’s and designed it in a way that the 7th and 8th grade will be vertically aligned with our learning of Concepts in Science to grade 6 and grade 9. This is all about the science we learned this year, thanks to our wonderful teachers who taught us in different ways and explained to us how these concepts are important in our daily life. Our resource books were made to make us understand the hardest concepts in the easiest way. The way the resource book was used is very interesting. The introductory sessions by the authors of the book conducted in the beginning of each trimester helped us to understand how the books have to be taken forward from the lens of the authors. Our teacher used the resource book as a tool to make us better at the terminology of science. The resource book was designed to show correct information on the content of what we are learning and not miss anything important along with giving a brief insight of the recent trends in science. The resource book is for two years which means that everything we learn in 8th grade will be a recap and extension of the concepts learnt in 7th grade. We thank all the authors of the books and teachers for their efforts in making the activities, tasks and group tasks that helped understand all complex concepts clearly and easily. Biology is the study of living organisms and is divided into specialized fields that cover plants, animals, habitats, origin and behavior. In Biology,we learnt about Adapting to life on land and how plants and animals adapt to life on land. In Nutrition & Energy flow,we learnt about how energy and nutrients flow in the cyclic form in nature.

Chemistry is the science that deals with the compositions and properties of substances and changes they undergo. . In chemistry,we learnt about the story of atoms, matter, metals and non-metals and Acids and bases. I liked how our teachers introduced Physics to us. Introduction to Physics was an innovative ,creative ,understanding and enrichment activity that has enabled us to understand the world of Physics in a much better and fun way. We were divided into groups of 3 where each student is of a different class so we develop the way we communicate with others and synergize to make our presentation the best. We were given a topic to think about and present our understanding in a chart- paper and had to present in front of 3 sections. This strategy had a completely different impact on our learning. In student centric learning of Introduction to Physics we were given an opportunity to explore the stations on Simple Mechanical Devices, Transportation and Newton’s Laws, Relative and Modern World, Physics and Biology and Physics help you see clearly. After that we pondered on the questions given to enhance our understanding more clearly. It was great when we were given the opportunity to explore Sound- our aural connect to the world, as a part of the Christmas Vacation Task. Next,we went to the Physics lab and performed a few experiments on the topics learnt during the vacation which enhanced our understanding on the topic. A Guest lecture by Mr. Srinivas on the same topic with some hands-on activities cleared all our misconceptions on the topic Sound. VIBHA -VII MT.EVEREST KOUSHIK -VII NANDA DEVI DRUTIL.-VII TRISUL

SILVEROAKS ELECTIONS Our school exhibits its tradition by hosting elections for the Student Government and motivating students to become leaders. On 26th July 2020, the day we commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas, the school’s leadership team announced a much awaited update about the annual student government elections. In the true spirit of democracy, elections have been held since 2006. Silver Oaks ensures leadership as a character building experience promoting and imbibing the leadership traits in its students. The election commission at Silver Oaks and the Election Committee Members are Dermot Farrell, Sumeet Bhutada, Sangeeta Pratti, Basanti CS, Kavita V R. The EC had drafted the election procedure, criterion for eligibility, conducted elections, leadership programmes. The team opened nominations from grade 3 to 12 to apply for the 48 leadership positions of Prefects, Vice-captains, Captains, Vice-president & President. Based on the criterion of the eligibility, the team shortlisted 3 leaders from each grade for the eligible position. The shortlisted contestants had released their campaigning videos on the election website, which could be viewed by all the acorns of Silver Oaks. These campaigning videos influenced many students to vote for the right candidate. Excluding this, the president and vice president had a live debate on their responsibilities, assurances, ideas on how to execute the student government along with fellow leaders for the best of the school. The voting process was conducted virtually and the results were announced through a live stream, which was exhilarating. The EC team had conducted the oath ceremony on 15 Aug 2020, which took place at our mighty oaks campus with the 48 elected leaders. The oath was to give our 100% efforts and collaborate with our fellow leaders for the betterment of the school as a whole.

The young leaders led themselves, balanced leadership activities along with their academics, carried the vision of live, learn, lead and live a timeless legacy. The leadership strongly focuses on finding your voice and encourages leadership. Through this article, I thank the election commission team, Principal ma'am, Teachers, past student governments and Director sir from bottom of our heart for conducting elections smoothly during tough times and grooming the younger leadership for better society. -By Ram Aryan and Sohaam (Grade 7 Kanchenjunga)

SILVEROAKS DEVELOPING ATL'S To be honest, this year had its own ups and downs. However, I was able to successfully get through everything this year had to offer me. Although the academic year was mostly online, I never missed a chance to go to the offline classes. Be it online or offline I acquired immense knowledge through every activity that I did and every interaction in the classroom. I developed the approaches to learning in the process too. And here is how : I mentioned doing a lot of activities, and you know what that requires - thinking. I would say that writing speeches in 1 hour and improvising it until it was REALLY good has enhancedmy thinking skills. Most of the competitions like human-calculator, spell-bee or wordcraft always stimulated my brain to work more efficiently. Must not forget the ICT classes which are always really interesting and fun. To be able to do all this involves discipline and organizing. I was able to manage my time by maintaining timetables that schedule my day from waking up to the amount of time I read a book before bed. I took notes every time my teacher mentioned something was due and that’s the reason I was able to submit most of my work on time. Also, I didn’t do my tasks for the sake of doing my tasks but knowing that this knowledge will add to the knowledge I already have. As most work involves research, I’m pretty good at it too. In fact, I know everyone takes interest in tasks if they involve research. I developed this skill by doing math investigations and working in the lab during science sessions. But it wasn’t just me on my own, I was put in a group along with some of my classmates to collaborate, do each activity and fill out the worksheet given. At this point, I got pretty good at socializing. I was lending help and accepting help from my group members whenever we had breakout sessions or simply a group project (much like our recent math investigation).

Finally, I think you would want to judge me on my communication skills after reading this article. But, I did develop my communication skills through club activities that we had during the initial days of school and also through S@SO. To conclude, though I know there were tough times for each one of us, I am fortunate to avail the opportunity to attend online classes when millions never even attended school due to the pandemic. So, I feel privileged that I had a chance to learn and will definitely try not to look at this opportunity as something worthless. SILVEROAKS MANTRAS OF MAHATMA Gandhiji preached some extraordinary values which we follow as the Mantras of Mahatma. These mantras were Swadesh, Swaraj, Satyagraha, Sarvodaya, and Swadharma. Our school follows these mantras to build character of the Acorns. The first mantra of Mahatma is Swadesh. Swadesh means self-reliance and self-sufficiency. It means to support ourselves instead of waiting for someone to come and help us. We implement this in our schools by making sure that we do our tasks independently and participating in programs such as coins for the country and Theater in Education. Our teachers would show a video on each mantra of Mahatma everyday during the Gandhi Jayanti week and make us read the Mantras of Mahatma book. This mantra of mahatma affected me as a student by making us more untrammeled when it comes to completing our tasks or practicing for our exams. The second mantra of Mahatma is Swaraj. Swaraj means self-control and fearlessness. It means that we should be able to lead ourselves and have the courage to lead others as well. We practice this in school through student elections, group tasks and representing our section by participating in inter-school activities. This mantra of mahatma affected us as a student. Since now, we have the qualities to represent our class in the school through student elections. The next mantra is Swadharma. Swadharma conveys “my work, my duty”. It means to listen to our soul call and respond to self duty. We apply this mantra in real life by doing the task on our own, without anyone reminding us. One of the 7 habits related to this mantra is being proactive. It helped us as a student to develop the attitude that “I can do anything” and helped us to stop blaming others when we commit a mistake. The fourth mantra of Bapu is Sarvodaya, which means universal welfare. It is also known as the spiritual pole star of mahatma. Helping others grow and develop is an example of following Sarvodaya. In our school, we follow the statement “Me and my country, we grow together”. It motivated us to participate in events such as “Coins for the Country” and “Street store” and helped us realize this was not charity, but responsibility towards our country.

The fifth and the last mantra Bapu practiced was Satyagraha, truth and non-violence. A Satyagrahi will always speak the truth and have moral courage. He will also make the evil members see the evil, and make them realize their cruelty. As we’re taught to be open minded, we are less inclined to violence. We as students have been influenced by this mantra and practice it when we do a bad thing (we are stressed to speak out the truth) and when people do bad things (we resist and stop them). These mantras help us to connect with each other and make the goals of education harmonious. JAI HIND -- Abhiram Yalla and Nischal Suhas Grade 7, Mount Everest

MATHEMATICS OUR MATHEMATICAL JOURNEY 1. MATHS INVESTIGATIONS (CHRISTMAS VACATION TASK) Objective: To understand that every geometrical shape has its own form, purpose, and significance A word from the students. Ipshita: For me, Math is a really entrancing and riveting subject. It is my favorite subject as it involves critical thinking and problem-solving. It challenges my mind and has the potential to solve real-life problems. This time, we were given our Christmas vacation task in the form of investigations. We were given 13 mind-blowing investigations from which we had to pick 1 or 2 and present our logic, concepts, and connections in the form of evidence. This task was given to understand that each and every geometrical shape has its own properties and significance. Moreover, we were also encouraged to make our 3D models related to our investigation. My personal experience was really fun and this was a perfect task to keep students engaged and captivated during vacation time. It was a challenging task indeed but at the same time, it felt interesting. This task involves all the skills like- critical thinking as it helps in the acquisition of knowledge, social skills- as they signify decision making and accepting responsibility, communication skills because of speaking and presenting the knowledge, self-management skills as they promote organization and time management. And mostly, Research skills - formulating questions, observing, collecting organizing, interpreting & recording data while also presenting research findings. I did this task with my full ebullience and buoyancy. Talking about ISAP, This was really a task that intellectually stimulated me because of all the thinking involved. These investigations helped me to understand the properties and significance of geometrical shapes more closely. I liked how the concept of 3d models was also involved, it gave scope for better thinking and understanding. I will be looking forward to more such ideas.

Amay: In our Christmas vacation, we were given quite a few investigations in geometry that were very mind-boggling. There was a website in which we had lots of interesting investigations which were things we see every day but just didn't notice the math in it. Honestly, I found all of them rather curious and I couldn't come to a decision on which one to investigate but then one of them struck me the most profoundly- the investigation of why are dice in specific shapes. To sum it up, it was an extremely enriching experience and it showed us that everything has geometry in it and made us realize the importance of looking at everything through a mathematical lens. 2. MATH CHALLENGE (22nd December 2022) Saatvika (Manaslu): We 7th graders had a math competition based on problem-solving, mathematical communication, mathematical connection to ideas, and mathematical reasoning. The preliminary round was conducted on 15th December 2021 and I was very thrilled for the finals. In the finals, there were 5 pairs in which each pair had one 7th and one 8th grader. And as usual, we were given the CHOICE to team up. In the finals, there were 2 rounds. In the first round, we had 5 stations. We should proceed from station A all the way to station E by solving the problems logically as well as mathematically. The second round was a VIVA round. That was the most exciting part. VIVA round was where we were asked to put forward our thoughts on the competition and our way of digging out solutions. I had a lot of fun and I was very fascinated by the questions as well.

3. UNDERSTANDING MATH THROUGH PROJECTS Abhiram and Nischal Suhas: (Mt.Everest) Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms it is about UNDERSTANDING. In this academic year 2021-22, we had many opportunities to participate in different fascinating activities and tasks. Two of these were “Math Investigation” and “Math Stories”. While doing these activities, we improved “countless” unique skills, such as thinking skills, creativity skills, and inquiring skills. These projects also helped us to understand mathematical concepts clearly. Our school held many competitions for National Math Day 2021. One of these is the Math Story competition. We could create stories on any one of the math concepts we learned in class. Choosing the topic was a challenge, but we still felt very enthusiastic to create our story. Some of us chose our story based on a real-life experience, while others took inspiration from fictional movies. The best part of our experience was building the story around our math problem, and the main character solving it. This competition was very special to us, as it taught us some useful skills. Another activity that we had was Math Investigations. We did this investigation during our Christmas vacation. We were given a website link that had a set of investigations each with its own unique and interesting points. We had to choose any one investigation and explore it and also create a 3D model. This activity was very compelling because we were exploring something we never knew about and we also gained a lot of knowledge on concepts we didn't know about before. These two activities made math more interesting and easy to understand.

EVENT NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28th February every year. It is Celebrated to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect which was discovered by Indian Physicist Sir C.V Raman on February 28th.For his discovery of Raman Effect he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1930.The Raman effect is the inelastic scattering of a photon by molecules which are excited to higher energy levels. This is celebrated to showcase the importance of Science used in our day to day life. It is celebrated to discuss all the issues and create awareness of technological developments. The Event The day created a lot of energy for both the participants and the audience. To start off the event, two students- Ekagra and Akshaya, talked about the significance of 28th February, some fun facts, importance of science in daily life, the importance of scientists and the integrated approach of science and technology for a sustainable future. In fact the latter was the theme of the day. There were posters and write-up competitions on the same theme. House Quizzes The quiz teams were based on the 4 houses Whales,Tuskers,Tigers & Hawks. It consisted of 3 rounds. The first round was conducted by Ms. Archana. In this round, each team was given 5 questions and the questions were passed on to the other teams if not answered. Surprisingly, the audience knew the answer to most of the questions which were passed. Moving to the second round,The Rapid Fire Round, which was conducted by Ms.Ranjana. This time each team had 1 minute to answer 10 questions. There was an adrenaline rush in all the participants. Lastly the third round was conducted by Ms.Shailaja. Each team was given two questions which carried five marks each and the participants could ask for a clue. This was intense since the teams were trying to catch up with the other teams and there were a few twists and turns. At the end of the Quiz the scores were 22 for tigers, 20 for tuskers, 7 for hawks and 6 for whales. To include the audience, Ms.Jemimah conducted a Riddle quiz at the end and after that Ekagra and Akshaya asked the audience about their understanding about the day, how they plan to celebrate the day and what they understood by science.

Prize distribution The moment everybody was waiting for arrived!! Our Head Ms.Kavita ma’am felicitated all the winners .Ending the event, she concluded by thanking and appreciating the science team, participants, anchors and the audience. BELOW IS THE LIST OF ALL THE WINNERS AND THEIR WRITE-UPS AND POSTERS… Science Day (28TH February 2022) Article writing - Grade 7 Theme: Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future Vakalapudi Mohan Akhilesh VII Mt.Kailash ( Winner) People use a lot of science and technology everyday for their daily needs. In other words, Science and technology has become a necessity for living in recent times. These days Countries that are scientifically advanced are more authoritative and influential. If used properly Science can be a solution to solve a lot of problems like health hazards, pollution, global warming and the crisis for food and water. All the cities of the world can be converted into beautiful cities using science, all the vehicles that emit dangerous gasses can be converted into no pollution vehicles using electric vehicles. However this is being done only in the most advanced countries of the world. Science and technology can help any nation develop faster and safer. Science can help improve agriculture, pollution control, power generation, education, etc with the use of the Internet as a communication channel for exchange of ideas between nations. Like the two sides of a coin, Some use science for the betterment of the society while others use it for destructive purposes. For example, our planet earth has so much Uranium and if we use them properly can generate electricity. But people still use them for creating deadly weapons. All the problems like pollution, deforestation, etc. can be solved using science. It all depends on how we use it and what we want to obtain from the discipline called science.

EVENT SHARK TANK The Shark Tank was an enriching and enlightening experience, especially after I got a grasp on the basics and main idea behind this event. Like any other person, I naturally felt nervous when I stepped up onto the stage. But, as I started pitching my idea, I started to feel more confident and allowed myself to fully embrace my product and explain about it in the best way possible. The main idea behind this event was to test out how and in what way we would come up with innovative ideas that could change the world for the better. My idea was “THE SILENT HORN”. It works using an RF transceiver, connections to the speakers and the horn of the car. So, when we honk, the RF transceiver will send a signal as long as you hold the horn, at a short distance in front and beside the car. The car receiving the signal will receive the radio signals through the car's speakers just like how a radio in the car works. But, on the bright side, it won't interfere with the actual radio itself. - Aakash Ganganagunta, 7th Mt. Kailash

There are many events planned by the student government that turn out to be simply extraordinary. Shark tank was just another amazing event that I wanted to participate in, and I really did find it very amazing because of the amount of people participating and the ideas they had come up with. Our idea was about fashion and how you can customize our own accessories. Our idea was to create a website where people can customize their own accessories or buy accessories that were already made, we also wanted to make fashion out of objects that are no more used, we wanted to make accessories as simply accessible as possible because it’s nearly impossible to get what you want by just making one on your own. My partner in business, A.K.A , my best friend Reva Shakhai was an amazing person, as she made the slide show presentation AND the sample accessories for the sharks to see - all on her own, a huge thank you to her because - even though it was my business idea, she was the machines behind it. I also loved the others’ business ideas like console cafe, and the silent horn. Even though our presentation had a bumpy start the sharks had actually liked the idea of this and at the end we won 40 lakhs by 4 sharks. A HUGE thank you to Seetha Murthy mam for approving this event, I personally loved it. - S Sri Harini, 7th Mount Kailash
