Junior Wardens Report 2ND QUARTER REPORT Junior Neighbourhood Wardens Authored by: Ian Mitchell 1
Junior Wardens Are Back Phased Start 27th April 2021 Junior Wardens activities have started again, initially in a small way as restrictions eased. began to ease. We held our first mini event with SCPA in Weston recently with a number hunt, one lucky winner received £30 of Range vouchers. This was a pop up event, we set up and waited for the local children and families to come and engage with us. We engaged with 15 young people and their families from International Way and the surrounding areas. This was also the first news story on our new public Facebook page. This was set up to enable everyone to see what we do, encourage engagement and promote the scheme to a wider audience. Our new page already has 93 members which is fantastic, but we always want more so please feel free to share. We are also using Facebook to alert members of 3rd party events and chances for them to have a say on topics of interest. 2
May Our next pop-up event was a bit of a wash out with the rain for the Great British Spring Clean. The Wardens and Waste teams from Southampton City Council soldiered on though, clearing 12 bags of litter/bulk and the road sweeper finished off at Wavell & MacArthur Crescent. Thanks everyone for their support “One Council” June We joined with SCPA at Wavell & McArthur for some fun and a litter picking game in the park. We had really good engagement with 5 families including 8 children ranging from 8-11 years old. The children took part in a litter picking game, using a litter picker to move as many balls as they could in one minute from box A to B. Sounds easier than it is, as Anna from SCPA found out when she tried. We spoke to both children and parents getting to know them a little better whilst having a bit of fun. At the end of the session there was one clear winner “Summer”, who scored 12 in just one minute. 3
July/August Vanguard Rd design day (July) We had a great morning at Vanguard Rd for our Mosaic design session with SO18 Big Local. We had 36 local young people come down to see us and share their designs with us which was great. Vanguard Rd Mosaic Days (August) The designs were put onto boards and then over 3 days in August the young people came back to make their mosaics. Vanguard Rd Mosaics put up outside the shops for everyone to enjoy (August) Following on from our previous mosaic project supported by SO18 Big Local. Most of the Mosaics designed and produced by local children in Vanguard Rd, are now up on show outside the shop. Thank you to Ray (Neighbourhood Warden) who made the frames for the mosaics. A great little project brightening 4 the area for the local people. Thank you to everyone involved
July/August Wavell & MacArthur Family Fun Day We had a great turnout at Wavell & Macarthur with over 70 young people attending a family fun day run jointly with SO18 Big Local We had inflatables, games Monty's Bike Hub doing free repairs and competition's and don't forget Free balloons. Everyone had a great day and this event really brought the community together for a bit of fun. Great to meet so many of the local residents at this event. 5
August/September The Juniors were out supporting the ABP Marathon again this year. We run a water station each year to support all the runners who raise so much money for charity. We had a great day with sun, fun and lots of cheering. All the Juniors volunteered their Sunday to support this fantastic local event, so a big thank you to them. Looking forward to next year ABP Marathon 24th April 2022. The Juniors were also at Play Day in Hoglands Park again this year. Play Day is an amazing free event for families and children to engage in a variety of activities. Cllr Hannah Coombs “Thank you to SCPA and the Junior Wardens for a great welcome to the excellent Play Day 2021. Good to see it back and bigger and better than ever” 6
Junior Wardens We currently have 42 Junior Wardens signed up to the scheme, including 7 new starters since July. This is lower than previous years due to many factors and the impact of Covid in the past 18 months. On a really positive note, we are also trialing Pop Up events this year to see what engagement is like. This has gone really well. So far, we have run 6 pop up events, engaging with 129 young people & their families on their doorstep. 31 of those are also registered for future Pop-Up events. The Pop-Up events have also generated 58 new followers on our public Facebook page. What’s Coming next quarter? • The re-start of our Intergen program at Fairfax Court • Potential for joint working with schools, in discussion with the Head of the Virtual School • Several projects are being planned for next summer already • Mini Medics first Aid Courses for October half term 25th, 26th & 27th • Afghan Community Day, 25th October • 2 further Pop-Up events 28th & 29th October half term • Remembrance Sunday 14th November • Supporting Community coffee mornings at The Venny, Weston Ian Mitchell [email protected] Junior Warden Co-ordinator 07766 508604 7
