We know that one of the main reasons you have chosen Romsey is that it is a highly successful school with a distinctive ethos and you want your son or daughter to be given every opportunity to succeed. As you are aware, we are an extremely popular school and are oversubscribed in the new Year 7, so we hope therefore that having been successful in securing a place for your son/daughter, you will join us on your child’s learning journey to ensure that he or she takes full advantage of the opportunities available. You and your child will be ably supported by an excellent pastoral team. Mr Bettiss is the Senior Pastoral Leader who oversees the transition of all new students into the school as well as coordinating the Year 6 into 7 Transition Programme. He will be supported by the Year 7 Pastoral Team and Mrs Thomas (SENCO). We look forward to working with you over the next 5 years. The Transition Programme I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to The Romsey School. The next few months are both an exciting and nerve wracking time for both students and parents but the range of events that make up the Transition Programme (shown below) are designed to make this process as smooth as possible for you and your child. Many of the events depend on what tutor group your son or daughter is placed in. These tutor groups will be mixed ability and contain students from a mixture of different primary schools. Students will be taught in these groups for most of their subjects in Year 7. This process of placing students is undertaken with primary school teachers and where possible students are placed with at least one student that they know well. However, this will be done towards the end of June once the Primary School visits are completed and we will send a letter to you before New Intake Evening to let you know which tutor group your son/daughter has been placed in. June • PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS The Pastoral Team will visit the school 27th June of every student to talk to them and their current teacher 3rd July 4th September • NEW INTAKE EVENING (NIE) is for all new students and parents September and an opportunity to meet the tutor (more detailed info below) 17th October November • PRIMARY WORKING DAY where students will come to Romsey School (normal school times) to sample secondary school life • INDUCTION DAY Year 7 students start a day earlier than the rest of the school to help them settle in (includes a free hot meal!) • AVON TYRRELL trip will take place this month for all students to help them bond with their new tutor group • MEET THE TUTOR EVENING will be an opportunity to have a short meeting with your child's tutor to see how they have settled in • PARENTAL SHADOW is an opprtunity for parents to shadow your son/daughter through a couple of lessons and meet pastoral staff There is a variety of admissions paperwork that needs completing within this booklet. Completed forms should be returned to the school as soon as possible either by post or by hand on New Intake Evening. Payment can be made online (setup instructions will be provided with the Tutor Group Letter) or by cheque made payable to The Romsey School. If you have any questions related to transition, please do not hesitate to contact me. General school enquires should be addressed to Lucy Prestidge ([email protected]) and medical enquiries to Natasha Weyers ([email protected]) Mr A Bettiss Senior Pastoral Leader [email protected] Page | 3
The Year 7 Pastoral Team Welcome to The Romsey School! My name is Miss Marlio and I will be your child’s Progress Leader for their secondary school journey. I will be meeting most of them over the next month as I visit them in their primary schools. I will be here to support them pastorally and make sure they are making progress at The Romsey School. If you need to contact me regarding your child, please do so at [email protected] and I look forward to meeting you at the New Intake Evening. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce Ms Bran who will be the Pastoral Support Worker for the new Year 7. Ms Bran will remain with the Year Group until they leave in Year 11 and as a non-teaching member of staff is available for students for all manner of pastoral care during the school day. If there are pastoral issues which you feel we should be aware of before your son/daughter starts, please contact Ms Bran ([email protected]) or myself. Miss J Marlio Year 7 Progress Leader [email protected] Special Education Needs This term will fly by and it won’t be long before your son/daughter will be getting ready to start Romsey School. This is by far the biggest transition that your child will make and therefore it is imperative that we all try to make it happen as smoothly as possible. If you feel that there is information that the school needs to know about your child and their Special Educational Needs then please do not hesitate to contact me at the email address below to discuss things further or arrange a meeting. Sooner rather than later is always a better option here so that we are better equipped with all the relevant information to offer your child the personalised approach that they may require. Peer Supporters We have recently selected and trained around 80 Year 9 students to be Peer Supporters. They can be identified by the distinctive badge shown here. These students have volunteered for this role, written an application and have been interviewed and selected by the Year 9 Pastoral Team. Their role is to support and assist the new students during transition and in Year 7. Generally, this will involve them working with tutor groups but many are also allocated individual students to support and mentor on a weekly basis. These students are usually identified by the primary schools in advance but if you feel your child would benefit from a Peer Supporter, please let Ms Bran ([email protected]) know and she will allocate one for you. New Intake Evening (Thursday 27th June 2019) On this evening, parents and students will get to meet their new tutor and fellow tutees. You will also get to hear from key staff about starting life at The Romsey School as well as depositing admissions forms and making contact with staff running the various services within school and beyond in the community that your son/daughter may benefit from. Primary Working Day (Wednesday 3rd July 2019) All pupils are invited to visit The Romsey School for a sample school day. Pupils should make their own arrangements so that they arrive in school by 8.30am and they should wear their normal primary school uniform. This is an excellent opportunity for you to have a practise run depending on how you intend your son/daughter to travel to school in September. Our Peer Supporters will meet them and escort them to the hall. The Peer Supporters will be involved with their allocated Tutor Groups throughout the day to help the pupils in any way that they can. The pupils will experience several different lessons and will have an extended time with their Tutor and Tutor Group. They will also have the opportunity to experience our extra-curricular activities fair and sign up for clubs and societies. Pupils should bring a suitable school bag with them containing a pencil case (pen, pencil, ruler, sharpener, rubber), a snack and a packed lunch, a bottle of water and any emergency medicines of which we have been advised on the medical form (inhalers etc.). They will also need a pair of trainers for their PE lesson. As the Canteen operates a cashless system, the canteen will be unavailable to pupils on the Primary Working Day. Those pupils who normally have a free school meal will be able to obtain a free lunch voucher from their tutor in the morning tutor period on the day. At the end of the day, pupils should make their own way home where possible to avoid congestion on the school site. Those who are not walking or travelling by public transport will be dispatched from the hall at 2.50pm and parents should meet them at the school gates. Induction Day (4th September 2019) Year 7 students start back a day earlier than the rest of the school to allow them to settle in. The Year 10 Peer Supporters will also be present to support them. The students will have a double length tutor period to get to know their fellow tutees and then start their timetable with three subject lessons. All transport will run as normal and all students will receive a free lunch from the canteen. Meet the Tutor & Parental Shadow (October/November 2019) Towards the end of the first half term, we hold a special Meet the Tutor parents evening where you can make an appointment to meet your child’s tutor to discuss how they have settled in. Mrs Thomas (SENCO) will be available for SEN enquiries as will other members of the Pastoral Team. Of course, if you have any concerns before that date please do get in touch at any time. After half term, you will also be invited in to our Parental Shadow event in which you can follow your own child around for a couple of lessons. Details of these events in Year 7 including dates will follow in the Autumn Term. You will receive information about these events through email as well as the less reliable pupil post system for those parents who have not registered an email address. Page | 6
Avon Tyrrell Trip As part of our induction package for Year 7 pupils every pupil in Year 7 will attend an Activity Day in late September or early October with the rest of their tutor group. The venue is at the UKY Avon Tyrrell Centre in the New Forest and the purpose of the day is to build trust and encourage developing relationships within each tutor group. Each pupil will participate in a range of activities throughout the day and these will include a variety of water and land based activities – all of which involve teamwork. Specific information will be given to the pupils in September along with the confirmed dates. Further details will be given in September. In previous years, pupils have left school at 10:00 and arrived back at school at 17:45. If your child uses public transport or the school buses for travel to and from school, it will be necessary to make alternative arrangements to collect them on their activity day. Pupils will need to bring a substantial snack, a packed lunch and sufficient drinks for a very active day, drinking water will be available. If your child has free school meals then the school canteen will provide a packed lunch for them. Your child will need two sets of clothes for the day. The first being old clothes that you don’t mind them getting wet and muddy, plus shoes that they can get wet (old trainers will be ideal). They will also need to bring with them a complete change of clothes, including underwear and shoes. They will also need a towel, warm sweatshirt and a waterproof coat. If your child needs any medicine during the day (e.g. an inhaler or epi-pen) please ensure that you provide the medicine on the day of the visit. If your child develops a medical condition after you have handed in the Off Site Activity Form Consent Form in September please inform us before the trip departs. RoScA has allocated funds to subsidise the trip for every Year 7 child by £10. If you feel able to pay the full amount yourself, RoScA will put each extra £10 directly into their fund which raises money for a variety of projects across the school every year. If you feel you wish to contribute the full amount (£35.00) please tick the appropriate box on the reply form. If not please tick the box for the subsidised amount of £25.00. Please complete the slip and return it at the New Intake Parent’s Evening or by post. Payment can be made online once you have registered or by cheque. If you are unable to contribute the full amount because of financial hardship please contact me as soon as possible. Mr A Bettiss [email protected] Page | 7

RoScA Welcome to The Romsey School, and for those of you with students higher up the school, welcome back to Year 7! At this exciting time, amid the confusion of paperwork, this letter tells you about RoScA, the Romsey School Parent Teacher Association. It is very unusual for a Secondary School to have a PTA but we believe it is important in many ways: to support our children, the teachers and parents...and to have a bit of fun along the way! Our main fundraiser is the Romsey Show, where volunteers have free entry to the show in return for a 2 1/2-hour slot on the gates, catering, etc. We also serve refreshments at school events and have an Easyfundraising online shopping site. Our Quiz evenings have become an annual event and this fun filled evening is attended by both parents and staff. We will be holding another Quiz in the school hall on Thursday 16th November. The Romsey School Lottery is another of our fundraisers. For one payment of £20 you will be allocated a number and one number will be drawn each month. Half the money is returned in prizes and half is used by ROSCA for extras / subsidies for pupils. The full rules and registration form can be found at http://rlp.romsey.hants.sch.uk/rlp/file.php/33/web/index.html or email [email protected] The new Year 7 will immediately benefit from our £2400 subsidy towards their activity day at Avon Tyrrell (a £10 subsidy per pupil). We have just agreed to spend £4,800 following bids from various departments within the school. This includes 16 x compact digital cameras, ceramics equipment and desk top easels for the Art Department; £800 of fieldwork equipment for Geography; a Joulemeter, 8 x power meters and a Digital Galvanometer for science; 3 x table tennis tables for PE and a Smart Parent Licence which will enhance communication between the home and school. We are also your 'Parent Voice'. In the past we have held 'Hot Topic' discussion evenings attended by both staff and parents and led by the senior management team. If you feel there are any topics that need discussion, please let us know. Being involved with RoScA Parent Voice is a great way to get to know fellow parents and staff, especially now that we no longer meet at the school gate. We always appreciate your assistance with fundraising events, whether it's serving tea and coffee for an hour, joining the Lottery or simply using the Easyfundraising site whilst shopping online. If you have a few more hours to spare, you are welcome to join our friendly committee for evening meetings which are held each term. Please visit our section of the Romsey School website (www.romsey.hants.sch.uk), click on ‘Parents’ then ‘RoScA Parent Voice’. Where you can check out our diary of events or contact us [email protected] if you would like to get involved. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you all the best for your time here at The Romsey School. The RoScA Team Page | 9

Instrumental Music Policy INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TUITION POLICY AND GUIDELINES AIMS To develop musicians into confident performers and composers; To enhance the musical development of pupils regardless of gender, ethnicity, ability or financial circumstances; To enable pupils to develop a wider musical experience through the enjoyment of learning an instrument and participating in extra-curricular activities. 1. Lessons Lessons will be of 20 minutes duration on a rota basis to minimise disruption to the mainstream curriculum. Years 10 and 11 pupils are timetabled outside of lesson time, where possible, to avoid disruption to GCSE classes. Lessons are individual All pupils receive a guaranteed minimum of 32 lessons each school year, although in practice they receive more. 2. Charges Current charge for lessons is £285 for the academic year Payment options are: deposit of £100 before 19 July 2019 followed by one payment of £185 before 2 September 2019 deposit of £100 before 19 July 2019 followed by two equal payments of £92.50 by 1st October and 1st November. Payment can be made by debit/credit card, online or by cheque. In cases were payment is not forthcoming, one additional request for payment will be sent. If no payment has been received within seven days of the second request for payment lessons will cease without further notice. Refunds will not be made unless, in exceptional circumstances, there is long-term staff or pupil absence. Each case will be examined individually. 3. Termination Parents are given the option to terminate this agreement at the end of each academic year. Once in place, this agreement will automatically roll forward to each new academic year unless a termination request has been received by 19 July 2019. Refunds will not be available for parents who terminate lessons in the course of the academic year unless a waiting list is in operation. Parents terminating these arrangements mid-year must do so by writing formally to the Head of Music. Page | 12
4. Hardship No pupil should be disadvantaged through financial hardship. The School may be able to offer parents further subsidy and are invited to write to Mr McKavanagh, in confidence, to request financial assistance. Requests are particularly welcome from families who are eligible for free school meals or Pupil Premium funding. 5. Pupil Commitment Pupils are expected to practise daily and take care of their instruments. Practice books must be completed and signed by parents each week. Pupils are expected to take responsibility for arriving at their lessons on time. Timetables are clearly displayed in the Music Department and pupils must check these regularly for any changes that may have to be made. There is an expectation that pupils will support the school's Music Department by attending weekly extra-curricular music activities that are appropriate for their instrument. There are no additional fees for weekly extra-curricular music activities. If appropriate, pupils are expected to take part in public performances arranged by the school. 6. Examinations The School will operate arrangements for Graded Examinations with the Trinity College of Music, London and London College of Music (Musical Theatre only). Whilst it is strongly encouraged, it is not compulsory for pupils to sit for Graded Examinations and pupils will be supported to enjoy their instruments at every level. 7. Feedback for Parents Each teacher will prepare an Annual Review about pupil progress. Teachers will communicate informally with parents as and when issues arise but particularly in respect of examinations. 8. Loan of Musical Instruments The School's Music Department has a limited number of musical instruments that it is able to loan to pupils for the purpose of learning the instrument in school. For details of the instruments that are available parents are encouraged to contact the Head of Music. 9. Waiting List Where no places are available to teach a pupil in their chosen instrument, pupils will be placed on a waiting list When a place becomes available pupils will be chosen based on the amount of time they have been on the waiting list.
