Star Ratings - Influenza vs. Chronic Medication Patients You may be wondering “What does Influenza have to do with Star Ratings”? Don’t worry, this is not a new measure that CMS is looking at, but influenza can impact the medical condition of your patients that are being measured. It’s not possible to predict what this flu season will be like since it is unpredictable in a number of ways. While flu spreads every year, the timing, severity, and length of the season usually varies from one season to another. The “Flu Season” typically peaks during the winter, but the season actually begins in October as the weather begins to get cooler and can last until May. There are many reasons why the flu season can become very serious, some are virus related and some are behavior related. Virus related:  The virus seems to thrive when absolute humidity is low, a common condition in fall and winter weather  People are contagious up to 36 hours before symptoms are present  The virus is airborne and can live on surfaces from seconds to 48 hours  People can still spread the virus up to 5 days after symptoms are gone Behavior related:  During the winter, we spend more time indoors….sneezing and coughing on each other  Large and frequent gatherings during the holidays  Shorter days and longer nights result in less exposure to natural vitamin D or melatonin  Poor hygiene habits such as inadequate hand washing or touching nose  Don’t rush back to work, take the necessary time to get healthy and not help the illness progress to pneumonia or worse… What about the “Flu Shot”? Recommend flu shots to your customers who are getting medications for chronic illnesses when appropriate. If you are authorized to administer vaccines, advertise that you are. Flu vaccines are available in different forms and combinations and are still your best defense against the flu. Remember, flu viruses are constantly changing so it's not unusual for new flu viruses to appear each year. Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will be the most common during the upcoming season. Three strains of flu viruses commonly circulate among people today: Influenza A (H1N1) viruses, Influenza A (H3N2) viruses, and Influenza B viruses. All 2014-2015 trivalent influenza vaccine is made to protect against the following three viruses:  an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus  an A/Texas/50/2012 (H3N2)-like virus  a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus. 195 THEATER DRIVE • P.O. BOX 1027 • DUNCANSVILLE PA 16635

Some 2014-2015 flu vaccine also protects against an additional B virus (B/Brisbane/60/2008- like virus). Vaccines that give protection against this forth virus are called quadrivalent vaccines. According to the CDC, the flu also can worsen chronic health problems such as Diabetes, COPD and Asthma. Customers are more likely to get flu-related complications if they have one or more of the following medical conditions:  Asthma  Chronic lung disease such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease [COPD] and Cystic Fibrosis  Heart disease such as congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease  Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease  Endocrine disorders (such as diabetes mellitus)  Kidney disorders  Liver disorders  Metabolic disorders (such as inherited metabolic disorders and mitochondrial disorders)  Weakened immune system due to disease or medication (such as people with HIV or AIDS or cancer, or those on chronic steroids)  People younger than 19 years of age who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy  People who are morbidly obese Body Mass Index, or BMI of 40 or greater) Are you prepared to consult clinically with your customers and patients when the time comes? Do you stock a good multivitamin? Do you have OTC products in stock that are indicated for patients with Diabetes? Do your pharmacists engage customers who are browsing the cold/allergy aisles? Are your employees working the front of the store trained how to recognize patients needing product suggestions and to refer them to a pharmacist for consultation? During flu season, don’t forget to increase your stock of OTC products, nutritional supplements and sports drinks to replenish vital nutrients for those who are having side effects of the flu. Your customers will appreciate a well-stocked pharmacy for one stop shopping. As a reminder, help protect your staff from getting sick when assisting sick customers. Encourage your staff to wash their hands more frequently and provide an alcohol based hand sanitizer at convenient locations with tissues. Although flu is a killer all by itself, the impact it may have on existing conditions makes it even more dangerous and a factor that may reflect in Star Ratings metrics affecting your pharmacy’s overall scores. 195 THEATER DRIVE • P.O.
