ICT SUMMER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK || COMPUTER 1. Sticky keys Sticky Keys helps to use Modifier Keys (Ctrl, Shift, Alt, and windows key (⊞)) without needing to press them altogether constantly. For instance, the sticky keys to select the entire document content, copy the whole content and paste the same. Just pressing the key A, C, and V, will do the same function as using Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, and Ctrl+V when sticky keys feature is ON. In short, they make a specific modifier key i.e., ctrl, or Shift, or Alt, or Windows to ‘stick’ to the functioning keys until the sticky key feature is turned off. Besides its function, combination keys like Ctrl+Alt+Delete for taskbar shortcut can be accessed using one keystroke. And it’s very easy to turn the sticky key feature on and off, without opening the Control Panel each time. In fact pressing a single key can turn them on if you’re good with some keyboard shortcuts. 1.1 Steps to turn on sticky keys using keyboard shortcuts The easiest way to turn on this functionality is by pressing Shift five times in succession. Subsequently, the prompt ‘Do you want to turn on Sticky Keys? ‘appears on the screen (as shown in the image below) followed by a beep. Click Yes to proceed. The taskbar has this notification as an indication of the active Sticky Keys. However, this can sometimes hide inside the taskbar notification area, mentioned by the ⬆️ symbol placed beside other indicators as shown in Image below. 3|Page
ICT SUMMER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK || COMPUTER 1.2 Steps to turn on sticky keys using PC Settings For Windows 10 Enter Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard > Sticky Keys. Turn on sticky keys from the Windows 10 settings, you can directly search for Sticky Keys in the taskbar and click the appropriate option to land in this area as shown in image below. For Windows 11 Enter Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Sticky keys. Turn on sticky keys from the Windows 11 settings, all the options are identical to Windows 10 and functions are the same. 1.3 Steps to turn on sticky keys using Control Panel 4|Page
ICT SUMMER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK || COMPUTER Using Control Panel for turning on the Sticky Keys is also easy, and the steps are identical for both Windows 10 & 11 versions. Navigate to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Ease of Access Centre > Make the keyboard easier to use > Set up Sticky Keys to open this menu as shown in image below: Turn on sticky keys from the control panel Here you can customize everything related to Sticky Keys as per preference. 5|Page
ICT SUMMER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK || COMPUTER Quick Settings (Windows 11) This method is exclusive to Windows 11. Start with pressing ⊞ + A. Click Accessibility in the pop-over. Turn on the Sticky key toggle placed at the bottom. So these were some methods to turn this feature on. Let’s continue this with How to Use Sticky Keys? 1.4 Using sticky keys Let’s take a common example of select-copy-paste, assuming Sticky keys are turned on. You will press Ctrl (modifier key) twice to lock it. Two beep sounds in succession will confirm the selection. This means the Ctrl is active and will remain so until we turn that off. Now all you have to do is use A, C, and V to select all, copy and paste, as the Ctrl is constantly ‘pressed.’ But you might also need to select selectively and not the whole content. For this, you need to lock one more modifier key–Shift. This can be similarly done by pressing Shift twice (take note of the two beeps again). Now you have Ctrl and Shift both in active mode, and you can use the other shortcut keys for selection (arrow keys) and copy-paste (C and V). For deselecting, press the particular modifier key (a different beep). Or press two modifier keys together to turn Sticky Keys off (another unique beep). 6|Page
ICT SUMMER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK || COMPUTER Let’s summarize this: Ctrl, Shift, Alt, & ⊞ Press Shift five times Modifier keys as sticky keys: Tap that key twice in succession Turn Sticky Keys on: Press once Lock modifier Key: Press any two modifiers at once Unlock any modifier key: Turn Sticky Keys off: 2. Toggle keys Keyboards have Fn or Function keys at the top. They perform two different functions; media control, and general app control. In order to switch between these actions, users must hold down the Fn key when they tap one of these keys. The Fn key will switch the state/function of the Function keys from their primary to their secondary one. This key works like the Shift key i.e., it must be held down in order to use the secondary function of the Function keys. It doesn’t act as an on/off switch. Toggle Fn key You can easily change the primary function of the Function keys however, you have to go through BIOS to do so. If you’d like to be able to change the primary function of these keys from inside, you’re going to have to settle for an Fn key that toggles the functions to switch to secondary operation. The Fn key can be ‘locked’ i.e. it can enter an On state where the Function keys will execute their secondary function. When the Fn key is turned Off, the Function keys will revert to their primary function. To enable the Fn key lock, follow these steps: 2.1 Steps to turn on toggle keys using keyboard shortcuts Tap the F1 key on your keyboard and see what it does to determine the primary function of the key. 7|Page
ICT SUMMER HOLIDAY HOMEWORK || COMPUTER Tap and hold the Fn key on your keyboard. While holding the Fn key, tap the Fn lock key and then release both keys. The function keys will revert back to their primary function. 3. Filter keys Filter Keys tells the keyboard to ignore repeated keystrokes.
