High Tech Elementary 2020-2021 Together even when we are not together physically Design by: Poema Strong 5th Grade

A Message From Ms. Allie To the most resilient, compassionate and dedicated students HTe has ever had, You should feel so incredibly proud of yourselves for all that you have accomplished this year in the face of so many challenges. The pandemic forced schools to close, but you still managed to learn and grow. We had to social distance, but you still created classroom communities that are close and feel like family. From our Welcome Parade at the beginning of the year when you met your teachers for the first time, to the millions (maybe billions?) of times that your teacher asked you to either mute or unmute on Zoom, we made it through the uncertainty of this year together by bringing joy whenever possible and supporting one another. Remember our Trick-or- Treat Parade? I loved seeing everyone's costumes, even when I had to guess what our 2nd grade teachers' costumes were (rocks). We did many virtual exhibitions, sharing stories we wrote or newscasts on important moments in history, and our Kindergarteners even turned their classrooms into lifelike aquariums. Then we transitioned to hybrid learning where we got used to new rules, routines and masks. Through it all, we stayed true to who we are as a big HTe family. A huge thank you to Ms. Kucia, and everyone who contributed, for putting this yearbook together. This year has been unconventional, and Ms. Kucia has done a fantastic job adapting our yearbook and making it special for everyone! I hope that we enjoy this memento for many years to come. Love, Ms. Allie

Movement and Exploratory Mindfulness with Mr. Lizza In Movement and Mindfulness this year, students found creative ways to have fun at home, and they worked to build meaningful connections with others through play. In M+M classes, we meditated - focusing on our feelings, thoughts and our breath. We yoga stretched - improving our strength, flexibility and coordination. And we exercised to warm up our muscles before playing a movement game. Sometimes we played sportsmanship games, sometimes we played teamwork games, and sometimes we played resilience games. Throughout our hybrid learning project, students invented their own movement games, which were designed to encourage players to feel connected with one another.

Exploratory Engineering with Mr. Riley In all years, the main goal of engineering and science is to nurture students' curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. While this year was different in where we learned and how we learned, we were still curious, creative, and problem-solvers. We did so many things! We bird-watched, met scientists and engineers, designed and tested parachutes, and watched a robot LAND ON MARS! Once back at school, first graders got their hands dirty with plant science learning from their seeds and soil. And in fifth grade, students discussed symbolism and designed signs representative of their memories to leave behind as a parting gift to HTe.

Exploratory Theater with Ms. Starry This year in theater students have explored collaboration, creative expression, and storytelling through warm ups, games, literature, and performance. Some highlights have included co-creating the exploratory theme song, performing stories such as Elephant & Piggie’s Listen to My Trumpet, and writing and performing a puppet show. During hybrid learning this spring, students explored the essential question, \"As theater makers, how can we use our bodies, voices and imaginations to express different emotions?\" Each student chose an emotion to focus on and created a character inspired by that emotion. Kindergarten PROJECT S.O.S.: Save Our Seas In this project, Kindergarteners began with a virtual field trip to a coral reef! After that, they learned about characters, settings, character traits, problem/solution and fiction/nonfiction through read alouds and small group sessions. They continued virtual field trips to learn about different sea creatures and even learned abut the Great Pacific Garbage Patch! After, they thought of ways to help protect the ocean and created their own recycled Sea Creatures!

1st Grade PROJECT I Am a Story In this project, first graders used read alouds and class discussions to learn about the many stories people have to share. Students explored their own identities and wrote, edited, and published a book about themselves to share with their family, friends and communities.

2nd Grade PROJECTS Exploring our Identity Islands \"Exploring Our Identity Islands\" was about giving second graders an opportunity to examine all of the different parts of themselves and celebrating all of the wonderful things that make them them! Their essential questions were, \"What is my identity? What are other people's identities? How are our identities the same and how are they different?\" The second graders had a wonderful time learning about the different aspects of identity, such as personality, race, appearance, values, religion, and culture. While collaborating with other educators and taking inspiration from Disney Pixar's \"Inside Out,\" students created Identity Islands to show the different facets of their identities. High Tech Elementary's second grade classes became \"play researchers\" to learn about play for their final project of the year! They conducted interviews and collected information about how different adults in their lives played when they were kids. The play researchers also discovered many different types of play, both indoor and outdoor, structured, and unstructured. They also learned about the physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits of play, and how to be more inclusive when playing. Out of that research also came the realization of the amount of time typical kids spend on screens as well as what doctors and experts recommend. Coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, exploring different types of play and the many benefits of play, these kids are now excited about playing again - not only on screens! Finally, just as any good researcher does, students decided they wanted to share the valuable information they learned with others, and were given the choice between making a video advertisement or an informational poster addressing the need for more active play! 3rd Grade PROJECT CrEATing Connections In this year-long project, students focused on the question, “how can food traditions help us learn about, connect with, and celebrate each other?” Third graders learned and shared about different cultural holidays, family traditions and the food traditions associated with them. They even created traditions together- class holidays! Each student then chose a special family recipe to be a part of a grade level cookbook, and wrote persuasively to convince readers to try their recipe! Finally, students learned the science behind the cooking of their recipe and through experimentation with states of matter, mixtures and solutions and heat transfer, drew scientific models of the science involved in how their recipes are cooked.

4th Grade PROJECT Untold Histories During this year-long history project, students studied events throughout American History from multiple perspectives in order to elevate non-white experiences and stories. Students focused on the themes of power and privilege, and recognized trends across several historical periods. To share their knowledge, students created news segment videos about these historical events, specifically highlighting perspectives not typically covered in traditional history curricula.

5th Grade PROJECTS Creature Battles In this project, we learned all about how living things survive in nature! Together we studied the interdependence of living things as we dove deep into food chains and food webs through reading and science experiments. As the project progressed, students chose one living creature to focus on. They used nonfiction reading skills to research their creature’s role in a food web as well as the adaptations that help it survive in its specific habitat. Students shared their learning by writing a nonfiction research article about their creature and by participating in our Creature Battles event. In this event, students and their families had to discuss which of two creatures (chosen and researched by their classmates) would be more likely to survive in an imagined scenario. The Story Behind the Symbol During this project, we reflected back on not only all the memories of our years in elementary school, but also what we learned from those memories. We analyzed our moments from the perspective of our past selves and our current selves to reflect on the theme. In engineering, we learned about symbolism and crafted a symbol plaque to match the theme of our memory. Finally, we let our memory live on by placing our symbol in the spot that the memory happened in the HTe building.

Online Drama Club This year during Distance Learning, our Theater Exploratory teacher, Ms. Starry, created a show entirely online! Students K-5 who participated in the Online Drama Club performed the virtual musical, “Super Happy Awesome News!”

Black Student Union Black History is... This year, High Tech Elementary's Ms. Aja and Ms. Alex founded our very first Black Student Union (BSU). Black and biracial students had the opportunity to connect in monthly meetings and share about their identities and cultures, listen to stories about and by Black/biracial authors, share their own Black history, and engage in meaningful conversations with students and staff. Even though all BSU meetings were held on Zoom, we felt more connected as a Black and biracial community than ever before!
