PA The Official Initiative of the Hellenic Republic for Studies in Greece www.studyingreece.edu.gr 1. GREECE Greece (also known as Hellas) is located in Southeast Europe. Its population is approximately 11 million. Athens is the country's capital and largest city, followed by Thessaloniki. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Passage open to changes and, at the same time, country with a deep, rich and influential cultural basis, Greece constitutes a marvelous oxymoron, as it combines progress and tradition. It is the land where cyan and indigo seas embrace rocky mountains. The land of silver olive groves, white houses and dazzling marbles. The land of intense light, where freedom emerges from drama. Land of hospitality, where comedy and tragedy coexist. In Greece, the past is always present. You can admire the archetypes and you can feel the eternal spirit of this unique civilization which created harmony from chaos. A culture which discovered the unity of contrasts, based upon the imminent existential dialogue between Dionysus – the world of senses and Apollo – the world of logical conscience. Dialogue which gave birth to brilliant cultural achievements which created the framework of the Western Civilization. Being the place which saves the vision and the breath of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, Greece or Hellas is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, Western drama and the Olympic Games. That’s why this small country is considered the cradle of Western civilization. In the light of the above mentioned, we can easily understand that this inspiring Hellenic spirit surpasses the dimension of static archeology and can offer us an ontological spectrum through which we can consider some of the most crucial issues of our times. The creation of new perspectives inspired by the spirit of Hellenism is the principal aim of our courses. Page | 2

Throughout history the identity of peoples, societies or even entire continents has been shaped by the voluntary or involuntary movements of human beings. In our times this phenomenon continues unabated, with ebbs and flows depending on natural or man-made causes. Globalization, the widening of the gap between rich and poor, climate change, unresolved conflicts and more recently the Arab Spring have intensified migration flows from the developing to the developed world. Greece has taken the brand of the latest surge, originating in the Syrian conflict and is trying to cope with it while, at the same time, maintaining its social cohesion and humanitarian disposition. CONTENTS To better understand the complexities of such a phenomenon, the University of Macedonia offers a short yet comprehensive week-long course from June 29 to July 3, 2020. Employing instructors from a successful Master’s Program on the same subject, the course will consist of 6 units covering salient components of a multi-faceted reality. They are as follows: International protection of human rights The anthropology of migration The economics of migration EU migration, asylum and refugee policies World conflict, forced migration and humanitarian law Comparative issues in gender and cultural diversity Students will acquire a solid theoretical background which will markedly improve their understanding of a major international phenomenon. Guest lecturers with hands on experience will help them become familiar with the problems of applying theory to practice. Page | 7

PA The Official Initiative of the Hellenic Republic for Studies in Greece www.studyingreece.edu.gr THANK YOU! IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR INQUIRIES DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT US. [email protected] “Is it a museum, but just what kind of museum? A museum of marble gods? A botanical garden? An architecture museum? It is all of those together and we can study many important things in the legendary ruins. Its beauty is made out of its roughness and acridity that challenge between the sea and the mountain. On the other hand, its plants and small forests create an environment of leisureliness and sweetness.” - Jacques Lacarrière on Greece Page | 31
