“Where has the last six months gone? Every time I lookat her she is bigger and smarter than before. “ It’s allthe breast milk she drinks. You have a good supplybecause of all the nutritious foods you eat. I’m gladour efforts have paid off from the moment we saw her.”How lucky I am. I have 2 strong and stubbornwomen who keep me busy. I think since the day youwere born you may have kept me even busier thanyour mother. 4
“ My sweet girl, we are very proud of you. It’s true you kept us very busy the day you were born. You announced your arrival with a very loud cry. The midwife immediately dried you with a warm cloth and placed you on my chest. You were so close to me, I could feel your breathing and smell your skin. I have never felt so contented in all my life. I counted your fingers and toes. I remember observing how beautiful and perfect your fingers were. You gripped my finger tightly as if you would never let me go.”5

“ My daughter I’m sure you will be glad to hear that afterthe first difficult week, we finally learned to breast feedyou correctly. Luckily the community volunteer came tovisit us. She showed us how to hold you in the correctposition for breast feeding; and explained that if youwere not held correctly you could not attach properly toyour mum’s breast. As soon as your mum held you in theright position you opened your mouth wide and latchedon to the breast. By your second week you were breastfeeding about 12 times per day and night, and sleepingwell in between feeds. We felt happy to see you feedingwell and gaining weight. Your mum’s smile returned andyour grandparents were relieved. Our home was peace-ful again.” 8

Your father was surprised at how much Iwas eating. He joked that he would have to work 24 hoursa day to supply me with enough food. All went well untilneighbours advised me to avoid certain foods during thepost partum period, then your father started to worry. 12
