Mathematics Department Workshops Topic: Index Numbers Resource Sheet HT2.IDX.1a-Invitations Ask one student to come to the front of the class. Ask this student to invite someone to join them During the following procedure keep a track on the whiteboard of the number of students at the front. Ask both students who are now at the front to invite one other student to join them Now tell the class that you are going to ask each of the people at the front to invite one other person to the front. Ask them to guess how many invitations there will be before the whole group is at the front? (The idea is to give the group a feel for exponential growth.) When the whole group is at the front discuss the number of invitations. Ask the class to predict the number of invitations that would be needed to get the whole of the schools at the front of the hall. Review the learning by creating a table of “learner invitations” and number of people at the front of the class. Numbers invitations 1 0 2 1 4 2 8 3 16 4 32 5 Ask the learners to continue the table for a few more rows. What number of people would be at the front after the 10th invitation? After the 100th invitation? After the nth invitation? www.ncetm.org.uk A Department for Children, Schools and Families initiative to enhance professional development across mathematics teaching
