The first 16 years of my working life was spent in the zoo world, primarily working with elephants and primates. What is the main focus of your work? An agricultural technician’s work is very varied. We have many skills relating to the agricultural work that happens on every livestock farm, as well as those that are specific to the research we do. First and foremost I consider animal welfare to be our highest priority and have established a culture of care to ensure any animal used for scientific purposes receives the best possible care. We also conduct many trials and procedures that are performed under Home Office Licence. The standards expected of technicians working under licence are very high and strictly enforced. As one of the farms NACWO’s (Named Animal Care and Welfare Officers) I am responsible for ensuring that the legal requirements are met at all times and that these standards are maintained. 8 HEaTED magazine
