REFEREE CORNER We would like to thank all of the referees for the support they have given to Rugby Idaho this season. While it might not be seen, these individuals spend countless hours in the gym training, watching video of themselves and their peers, studying the law book and self-evaluating every decision they make. They are an essential part of developing the game and happily donate their time to share their love of rugby with the next generation. I have enjoyed watching them train and develop this season and look forward to seeing what the future will bring. Rugby Idaho offers youth development programs through the sport of Rugby and educational opportunities for learning and community service. Our programs range from 1st - 12th grades and U21 programs for late teens and college freshman. We also partner with local parks and recreation to offer Rookie Rugby programs at an affordable rate for children in low income households. We additionally give sponsorships to many high school players who could not afford to play the sports otherwise. We support efforts to reduce juvenile delinquency by providing teens structure through an organized sport activity. We support health and wellness programs through continuous play for kids, supporting modern medical studies that show when kids are active it increases their cognitive function. We also offer special programs for female development like Rookie Rugby and the newly sanctioned West Ada Girl’s 7’s programs which teach young ladies positive body image and powerful leadership skills through positive mentoring. Our aim is to eliminate gender specific barriers for young ladies aged 15 - 23 and directly enrich the lives of youth Rugby players through active participation in a male dominated contact sport. We strive with our varied programs to build a model for success through the sport of Rugby in the state of Idaho. 15

Rugby Idaho’s High Performance team, TOA, has a mission to provide access to advanced training and competition for as many capable and interested Rugby players as possible. We provide the opportunity for young men and women to represent Idaho and the USA in national and international events. We do this through relationships with the recognized national rugby academy system, USA Rugby and most importantly our parents and volunteers in Idaho. TOA Rugby is the Official Elite Select Rugby 15s and 7s team of Rugby Idaho Youth Rugby, the USA Rugby sanctioned State Based Rugby Organization (SRO) in Idaho. TOA includes boys and girls teams for Under 12,14,16, and 18 age groups. Players selected to play for the TOA are selected to represent Idaho and our community. Players are selected from over 30 high school and youth teams in Idaho. We are proud TOA participants are not only the best rugby players in Idaho, but are also among the best young men and women we can find. TOA players facilitate rugby love and community. They are examples of why rugby is a better endeavor. TOA is a high performance representative team, but differs from Academy or Travelling Club teams in that coaches, parents, and the community volunteer and donate to our not for profit team. Over the last four years TOA has been the runner up at the National 7’s event and recently had a team win the Great Northwest Challenge 15’s event. Those results have provided national recognition for individuals and is paving the way for future Rugby Idaho players access to rich rugby opportunities and experiences. In 2018 TOA players represented Idaho in France and Canada. One was selected by USA rugby to represent Idaho in December against Canada. TOA is a family comprised various age grade teams for boys and girls. The team includes players from every rugby school in the Treasure Valley and some from beyond. We are lucky to have contributors from local and regional sources, and parents from all professions and origins. TOA teams are entered in three rugby 7s and 15s tournaments around the country. During 2019, the TOA will travel to and enter in:  Las Vegas Invitational (7s) - Las Vegas, NV (U16 finished 2nd)  Great NorthWest Regional Cup Tournament (15s) - Boise, Id. , June 28&29  North American Invitational 7s - Salt Lake City, UT Aug. 2&3 Please inquire and be a part of our Rugby High Performance program. - Greg Turpen, Rugby Idaho High Performance Committee 20

RUGBY IDAHO YOUTH UPDATE Rugby Idaho is proud to offer Rookie Rugby as the non-contact game found in our nation’s Rugby for All development pathway. Today the game of rugby is played by 4.4 million people in over 100 countries across six continents and 200,000 of these players are female! This safe, team sport for boys, girls, moms, and dads promotes skills and values found in all types of sport. Rookie Rugby is simple to understand, organize and teach for any level player or volunteer. Rugby Idaho has researched and adopted a progressive approach to youth rugby, gradually building and adding skills to ultimately prepare players to be ready for full contact. This progressive approach ensures that the basic skills needed prior to playing contact are learned and mastered. The general adopted approach encompasses Youth 3/4 Touch (U10), Youth 5/6 Tackle (U12) and Youth 7/8 Tackle (U14). For the current season, Rugby Idaho ran over 50 rugby sessions at various middle/elementary school fields involving 1000+ students in the Treasure Valley alone. Due to our involvement in these schools, we have seen player participation increase by more than 60% since last year. In the Treasure Valley alone we have increased participation from last year in U10 boys and girls by 75%, U12 boys and girls by 114%, U14 girls by 135% and U14 boys by 15%. Due to this increase in player participation we have seen an increase in parent, coach and referee participation, allowing us to grow rugby in the area. He works closely with our dedicated coaches, administrators and volunteers to set up valuable youth rugby activities across the valley, with program growth and player safety as his top priorities. Promoting and expanding Rugby Idaho in our communities is a major focus for Rob where he is deeply involved with establishing a presence and developing relationships with our Boise area schools. This year he has already run more than 30 rugby physical education classes in multiple elementary and junior high schools, giving over 700 students a chance to discover the sport he loves. Rob is also a dedicated rugby coach with a level 300 national coaching certification. He began his rugby coaching career in 2013 when he founded the Highlanders Youth Rugby program in South Meridian. Recently Rob teamed up with one of Rugby Idaho’s founders Jeremy Haener to establish the Timberline Wolves Youth Rugby program where he now coaches the 7th & 8th grade boys and girls teams. Rob has been enjoying the fun and camaraderie of rugby since he started playing in Tampa back in 1994. He now tours with Paclantic (a combined US and New Zealand old boys team) and plays locally with the newly-formed Boise United men’s club. He also stays busy with his most recent rugby passion - refereeing - where he’s currently working on his level 200 referee certification. 43
