The SEG experience Ace student chooses NYP for an all-round education journey TEA PEI QI DIPLOMA IN MULTIMEDIA & INFOCOMM TECHNOLOGY (NOW KNOWN AS DIPLOMA IN INFOCOMM & MEDIA ENGINEERING) She could have picked any school with her O-level score of 3 points but Pei Qi, who describes herself as a hands-on person looking to gain practical skills, chose to enrol in NYP — a decision that baffled her parents. At NYP, Pei Qi made it to the Director’s List for all her six semesters and graduated with a perfect GPA score. She bagged multiple awards including the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science, Cisco Systems (USA) Gold Medal and Medallion of Excellence for Web Technologies. But her NYP journey was more than just attaining personal academic achievements and winning competitions for herself. Propelled by her desire to give back to the community, Pei Qi mentored secondary school students and helped out with engagement activities for senior citizens under the Mentoring Club. She also tutored her peers and coached her juniors who competed in the WorldSkills Singapore 2020. IBM offered a full-time position to Pei Qi, who is pursuing her undergraduate studies at Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) in the US on a full scholarship. 53
A step closer to realising his ambition BENEDICT HENG JIA LE DIPLOMA IN AEROSPACE SYSTEMS & MANAGEMENT Being a commercial airline pilot was Benedict’s childhood dream.“I’ve always wanted to learn about the job, and this diploma provided me a strong foundation in the basics of aerospace systems. I now have a better understanding of the science behind flying an aircraft,”says Benedict. During his last semester at NYP, Benedict was given the opportunity to take an internship with Qatar Airways, where he worked as a flight operations assistant. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that taught him skills like how to handle sick passengers, communicate with inflight catering staff and inspect an aircraft cabin to ensure it is ready for boarding. Benedict also met passengers from different countries, as well as pilots and cabin crew. He listened to all their stories, which inspired him to do his job well and work towards his dream of joining the aviation sector. He shares, “I’m grateful that NYP gave me this opportunity to learn from one of the world’s top airlines and take a step closer to realising my childhood passion.” From failing to scoring perfect GPA AMOZ CHUA DIPLOMA IN NANOTECHNOLOGY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE When Amoz enrolled in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), he never imagined that he’d complete it as the Top Graduate Student in the Engineering Cluster and go on to win the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science. “In PFP, I got to hone strengths and abilities I didn’t know I had. PFP gave me confidence and made me believe that I was capable of doing well,” said Amoz, who attributed his success to NYP’s nurturing lecturers, especially Mr Raymond Woon. Amoz won the Calyon Creativity Award during his internship at A*STAR and the Medallion for Excellence Award at WorldSkills Singapore 2020. 54
