Why NYP is the right choice Through our brand of holistic development, you will find learning opportunities that go beyond textbooks. Go on exploratory trips, tinker with ideas and come up with prototypes. Find innovative solutions to problems that people face day after day. Join one of more than 80 CCAs, or take part in a creative arts workshop at our Student Life Academy — we believe that these experiences will help you build your network and grow into your potential. We’ll get you to do electives in areas that are not in your chosen specialisation — so that you can see how other fields and industries are developing. Take a foreign language, or find time to create your own pet projects at our large MakerSpace@NYP. Collaborate with students from other disciplines and challenge your own ideas of what you can achieve. Together with our network of industry partners, we will work to nurture your development, expand your horizons and fuel your passions.
NYP’s Professional Competency Model is the game-changer NYP has fundamentally transformed teaching and learning with the Professional Competency Model (PCM). Put simply, it moves away from learning subjects, like Maths, in silos. Instead, you will learn the relevant skills needed, and how they all work together, in work tasks. So instead of learning the A to Z of physics, you will learn the specific bits of maths, the exact engineering know-how to draw and analyse data from smart sensors, and top it all off with public speaking skills — so that you can present your findings and make your work count. A key feature of the PCM: It is co-built, and in some cases co-taught, by industry majors and leading companies. This means that you will get additional industry certifications while getting your diploma! Because these companies are at the forefront of their expertise areas, your course will continue to remain relevant and desirable. So far, Microsoft, Oracle Academy, Ubisoft and Nvidia — among others — are involved in co-creating PCM courses with us. The SAS experience Grandma’s illness motivates him to take up biologics Photo taken before COVID-19 SHAHREYLL KHAIROULLAH L25 DIPLOMA IN BIOLOGICS & PROCESS TECHNOLOGY As a child, Shahreyll Khairoullah witnessed his grandmother struggle with diabetes, which sparked his burning desire to help others and save lives. So, he enrolled in NYP’s Diploma in Biologics & Process Technology course, where he got to learn how modern-day medicines like vaccines and cancer drugs were made. At NYP, his flair for leadership led him to helm the Aikido Club as president and the Martial Arts Club as vice-president. He also guided his team to clinch the Best Showcase Award at the NYP-DBS Innovation Challenge. Shahreyll performed so well during his internship at Amgen that the international biopharmaceutical firm offered him a full- time position just five months into his stint. His exemplary achievements earned him the Lee Kuan Yew Award in 2019. He attributes his win to the support and opportunities that NYP has given him. “The lessons I’ve learnt here have opened doors to my future, and I’m grateful that NYP has given me this chance to pursue my passion.”
Guidance from lecturers helps her win gold at national competition CHRISTY CHUNG DIPLOMA IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY (NOW KNOWN AS APPLIED CHEMISTRY) Christy participated in the inaugural Chemical Laboratory Technology trade at WorldSkills Singapore Competition 2019. She was trained intensively by her lecturers to sharpen and improve her laboratory techniques and skills, and was thrilled when she was chosen to represent NYP at the national-level competition. Christy went up against 10 other contenders from universities, polytechnics and the Institutes of Technical Education and saw her hard work and determination pay off when she was awarded the gold medal. Christy credits the guidance she received from her lecturers for her win. “By providing me the necessary knowledge and skills, I was equipped to not only compete, but also excel on the national stage,” she says. Star student with string of accolades inspired to become student mentor CHEAH KAH WEI DIPLOMA IN PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE For six consecutive semesters, star student Kah Wei made it to the Director’s List — NYP’s recognition system for students who excel academically. He believes he could not have done it without the guidance of his nurturing lecturers, who went the extra mile to guide, motivate and inspire him. He also received a commendable string of awards: the prestigious NYAA Gold Award, the AstraZeneca Bronze Medal and the AstraZeneca Award for Outstanding Project Work. Kah Wei’s NYP experience has left him with a desire to help others, and so he has served as a student mentor to his Year 1 juniors. He now has a deeper interest in the science, and aspires to work in the healthcare industry, so that he can make a difference in the lives of the sick and needy. 267
