Live Design School of DESIGN & ENVIRONMENT 8 Design (N12) 12 Hotel & Leisure Facilities Management (N40) 15 Real Estate Business (N48)

More than ever, design is shaping the future. The choices of our designs define the environment we want to live in. In the new normal, design will play a greater role in reimagining future solutions in every field and sphere, to meet the complex and unpredictable challenges we are facing. And the built environment presents opportunities for us to use our design- thinking approach to better create and manage living and working spaces. That’s where the School of Design & Environment (DE) comes in. You will learn how to draw on a range of skills, methodologies and technologies to deliver new products, experiences and services across various fields. Join us to create a better world by design.

3 DIPLOMAS ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES At DE, we harness your talent for design and sense of empathy for those you are designing for. And for those with a natural appreciation for living and working spaces, you will shape the way they are built and managed. Here, we provide you with opportunities to think through seemingly complex processes to arrive at simple but brilliant solutions. We aim to make the world a better place to live in, and we help you – the designer or built environment professional – get there. Design (DES) Unlock your creative potential and be a new age designer armed with emerging skills such as design thinking and user experience/interface (UX/UI) design. Designers are needed in virtually any industry; they are no longer confined to the design sector. You can be a user experience designer in a bank, a spatial designer in an architecture firm, a product innovator in a design thinking firm, a tactical planner in a place-making studio…the possibilities are exciting and ever growing. Choose either Architecture or Product Innovation specialisation option in Year 2 to explore your interest in related fields. Hotel & Leisure Facilities Management (HLFM) Apply work-based learning and project-based learning methods in the management of hotel, leisure and commercial facilities to improve service standards and operational efficiencies, while incorporating digitalisation, green technologies and best practices. Real Estate Business (REB) Market and manage public and private properties to help owners maximise the value of their assets. Build a strong foundation for further advancement in land economy or estate management studies. 2

Here at DE we live design and value the spaces around us. Our design-thinking methodology applies across all our diplomas, and our belief in sustainability inspires our learning. Whether you aspire to be a designer, an architect, a real estate professional or a facility specialist, you will, in effect, live design, think environment. SCHOOL OF DESIGN & ENVIRONMENT 3

PORTFOLIOBUILDING YOUR Through real-world projects, you will see the concepts you learn in the classroom come to life. At DE, we equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to design a better community for all. Plus, you’ll graduate with a stellar portfolio to boot. WALKING MADE EASIER A desire to help her colleague who was using crutches inspired Christine Yeap to develop a hands-free crutch, based on the concept behind bionic prosthetic legs. Incorporating more joints to mimic natural leg movements, Christine fine-tuned her design to make the crutch hands-free, improve its flexibility and allow for adjustments at the knee, ankle and foot. Christine Yeap Product Design & Innovation (PDI)* graduate, Class of 2020 NO FEAR OF NEEDLES Inspired by innovative injections that tap on vibrations and low temperature to distract patients from pain and discomfort, Muhammad Hafiz Bin Mohammad Sadli designed a product for children which physically blocks the needle from their sight during injections. It also features gentle vibrations – produced by a coin motor positioned along the child’s forearm – as a distraction. Muhammad Hafiz Bin Mohammad Sadli Product Design & Innovation (PDI)* graduate, Class of 2020 AWARD-WINNING IDEA TO BRIDGE THE GAP An idea to foster intergenerational bonds helped Clifford Tan clinch the Bronze Award of Architecture at the Asia Young Designer Awards 2019. His winning concept was to build a common space in Bukit Pasoh, or a Dialect Hub & Cultural Centre, to showcase the origins of various dialect groups in Singapore. He also hopes to promote the use of dialects between younger and older generations in Singapore. Clifford Tan Sustainable Urban Design & Engineering (SDE)* graduate, Class of 2019 *From AY2020, PDI and SDE have been merged to form DES (Diploma in Design) 4

LEAARNNDINSGERVING As part of our service-learning based curriculum, you will get to apply your course skills and knowledge to benefit the community. Through this experience, you will discover a deeper meaning for your course, which will make your learning journey even more engaging. MANAGE PROPERTIES FOR GOOD For example, our Real Estate Business students studied property management and worked on a service-learning project with Town Council. They surveyed defects in the housing estate, carried out painting and repair works, and cleared any obstruction to enhance the environment for the community. Service-learning brings their classroom theories to life, and allows students to apply their domain knowledge and skills to serve the community in public housing. SERVING THE COMMUNITY Service-learning is not confined to the local community. In a little village in Lombok, Indonesia, our DE students built a kindergarten from scratch for the village children. Apart from developing an acute eye for design and a better appreciation of building principles, our students also gained greater social awareness of the region beyond. Our SDE* students also proposed solutions to address the architectural needs and challenges of the residents in Pulau Ubin. For example, they worked with residents to identify improvements to the taxi stand on the island, while preserving its rustic charm. There are plans for DE students to participate in future projects on Ubin, such as transforming an old kampong house into a community centre for residents. *From AY2020, PDI and SDE have been merged to form DES (Diploma in Design) SCHOOL OF DESIGN & ENVIRONMENT 5
