Meet The Coach Coach May brings a lifetime of volleyball playing and coaching experience to Emmanuel College, along with an undeniable passion for the sport. Taking over the helm of the Saints program in the 2014-15 season, May came to Emmanuel bringing an abundance of playing and coaching experience. In addition to his GNAC and Division III coaching experience at neighboring Emerson College, May also served as an Assistant Coach for the Division I women’s volleyball team at Princeton University in 2013.A California native, May did his undergraduate work at Santa Monica College andat California State University, Northridge, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree inCommunications Studies. During the summers, May is the clinic coordinator andhead coach of the Sláinte Volleyball Club. Since 2007, he has run volleyball campsand club programs in San Francisco.May is an accomplished player as well, setting for the San Francisco Paai Kau Smashand the Los Angeles Mad Dogs. Since 2002, he has led his teams to one first placefinish, three second place finishes and several top-five finishes in the North AmericanChinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (NACIVT). May led Hazard Volleyball to aregional championship in the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA) in 2012 andled XLVB to four Gold Regional Championships in the Northern California VolleyballAssociation (NCVA) in (‘08, ‘09, ‘10, ‘12). As a collegiate setter, May captained hisSanta Monica College Team in 2001.The EC Athletic Department has been very enthusiastic about May joining the Saintsstaff as well. “Coach May brings a wealth of competitive playing and coachingexperience, and his entire professional career has been dedicated to volleyball,”boasted Emmanuel’s Director of Athletics Pam Roecker. “He is regarded as aninnovative, passionate, skilled and person-centered coach and his style is a perfect fitfor our college. Emmanuel College’s SportsFacilitiesThe Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium is home to the Saints for both practice andcompetition. With bleacher seating for up to 1400, game nights become the placeto be for the EC Superfans, the dance team and the cheerleaders. The YawkeyCenter also includes a state-of-the-art training facility, as does St. Joseph Hall. Bothfitness centers are updated with new platforms, racks, free weights and plate-loadedequipment. Great Northeast AthleticConferenceEmmanuel College competes in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC),comprised of 12 New England colleges and universities. Teams that win a GNACChampionship receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament,established in 2012. GNAC colleges with participating men’s volleyball programsinclude: Albertus Magnus College, Johnson & Wales University, Lasell College, MountIda College and Rivier University, along with conference affiliates Emerson Collegeand Wentworth Institute of Technology.on a daily basis.
