The Dougla Dougla New Race Fashion by: Micles 60 - YOU! Magazine by Calvin French 60 - YOU! Magazine by Calvin French

Dougla A Dougla (pronounced: doo-gla) is someone whose mix is Indian and African. Douglas are unique to Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana with its population being predominantly African and Indian, due to African slaves and Indian indentured labourers settling there after colonization . The word itself is derived from the Hindi word “dogala” which translates to the words ‘mix’, ‘many’ and ‘much’. The physical features and look of a dougla is a beautiful one; their skin tones range from caramel to dark mocha, while their hair textures vary from jet-black curly to cotton-like soft and bouncy. If you need a point of reference, look at celebrities like, Nicki Minaj, Tatyana Ali and Melanie Fiona. We can safely say Douglas are here to stay and this racial hybrid adds to the amazing cultural and ethnic melting pot, which is unique only to the Caribbean. Fashion by: Meiling Story By Brian Matthew For centuries the Caribbean underwent colonization from all major empires such as the British, French and Spanish bringing with them slaves from Africa, who settled in the West Indies amongst the indigenous people; the Amerindians . Naturally, with co- habitation new races emerged such as the most commonly known, Mulatto (a person mixed with white and black ancestry). There is one mixed race however, which is rarely mentioned – that is, the Dougla! Fashion by: Micles YOU! Magazine by Calvin French - 61 YOU! Magazine by Calvin French - 61

Jewelry Launched in 2016 Willow and Oak with its’ signature brass choker, Willow and Oak has grown into a contemporary brand Influenced by natural shapes and a strong belief of mistakes. Created by Shandelle Loregnard from Trinidad and Tobago after graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Fashion Design at The Fashion Institute of Technology. She created a Gold hammered choker for herself and started selling her chokers under the name Willow Jewelry on the popular online market Etsy. A year later, Willow and Oak was officially created. Our design ethos stems from the idea of creating pieces that once started off as a finished design and then develops into a final product by mistake. Influenced by natural forms and contemporary art, the brand exudes a minimal aesthetic that makes every piece a classic and timeless staple in every wardrobe. The daughter of iconic Supermodel Cindy Crawford, 51, caught the eye of fashion houses and agents as they were quick to point out the uncanny resemblance between the mother daughter duo. Kaia’s striking looks are so similar to those of her famous mother – with her cascading brunette hair and chiseled cheekbones. Kaia and her Mother on the Cover of Vogue Paris, April 2016 Even though Kaia recently turned 16, just in time to make the age cut-off to walk in the Fashion Week circuit, the model already has some seriously impressive designer credits under her belt. In New York Fashion Week, she appeared in the Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, Fenty, Coach, and Marc Jacobs’ shows; in London she made an appearance at Burberry. In Milan she checked off her first Fendi, Prada and Moschino show. Kaia’s fashion week highlight so far however, no doubt, has been walking the same show as her mother, as Versace did an iconic showcase At Milan Fashion Week , in memory of Gianni Versace, brother of Donatella and founder of the fashion house who was killed 20 years ago.
