The Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop. We check out the extraordinary Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop, based in an old cowshed north of New York City, where its highly selective founders are keeping the tradition of Bonneville alive. The patient enthusiasts who own the handcrafted masterpieces have only 5% of the say and the decisions involved in the five-year build process… Words and photography: Steve Havelock Main photograph: Dale Haberfield classic-american.com 51

I 62 classic-american.com always remember a Mustang I owned that a previous owner had sworn was a marvellous car… I later discovered it had spent several years in Mexico and had been subjected to the butcheries of the local mechanics, which can be best described as … errr… unusual or ‘creative’! Would the Olds be the same? It had after all come from Pennsylvania, a state not known for its dry climate, but hadn’t spent any time in Mexico… as far as I was aware!

Trim was removed for polishing. Big chrome bumper will polish up well. Paul Moore, who runs Cheshire Accident Management, A lifetime of parking dings... called with the good news after the strip-down had begun… it wasn’t rotten, what rust there was had been confined to ... was revealed But overall it’s good the usual areas, behind the wheel arches, which had been (as when the paint came off! and solid, like the car. feared) crudely repaired stateside with filler and that was now giving up the ghost. It also appeared there had been some Olds at EG Wright’s, Ashton-under-Lyne. minor damage on a rear passenger quarter wing, which had been filled, but now, two or three decades later, the damp had got into the ‘bog’ and it had started to deteriorate, causing rust to nearby metal. Along with this were plenty of car park dings on the doors… It was all to be expected and none of it was particularly concerning; in fact, it was great news. Even the Olds’ original sills were intact and not corroded at all. It looked as if it must have led a pampered life in Pennsylvania and not spent too much time in the snow and salt of its notoriously bad winters. Quarter panels are available from aftermarket suppliers in the US, but none of the corrosion was sufficiently bad to merit replacing whole panels and more to the point, it’s generally accepted wisdom to try and keep a car as original as possible and retain its original parts wherever possible. These days the watchword is ‘preservation’. Apart from which, many aftermarket panels can be made in China and are of inferior quality in terms of material, fit and finish than the originals. So, a total strip-down of the car was begun, with all the car’s trim removed and items like bumpers taken off to be polished at a later stage prior to being refitted after the car was painted. Once the car was stripped down to a bare shell, the rust in the rear quarter panels and the front wings was cut out and fresh, high-quality steel welded in its place, which was then smoothed with a grinder and flatted with high grade wet-on-wet papers, ready to be primered, and in turn ready for paint. The doors were an easier proposition; there was no serious rust (door bottoms are a typical candidate for corrosion in rust-belt states) but all those dozens of parking lot dings, which looked like bullet shots in bare metal, required attention. Taking a car apart like this raises a lot of questions and opportunities for an owner. One area that is vital and often overlooked is that of rubbers, mouldings and weather stripping. Being an East Coast car, none of the rubbers were especially perished compared with, say, an equivalent car from a dry state/West Coast car. That’s always the pay-off with so-called desert climate cars; there’s no rust or corrosion, but rubbers are dried and brittle, vinyl roofs are toast, as are interiors (unless they’ve been garage-kept, which is extremely unusual). classic-american.com 63

The first heat was held at Wheels Day which is the traditional kick-off event for the American car calendar and with a field full of vehicles, it was going to be tough to pick one car as the first candidate in this year’s series. Now if you’re thinking this car and owner look familiar, that’s because our heat-winning car did in fact appear in Classic American in February last year (issue 358) and was in fact the cover car. Owner Adam Pearce cut his American car-owning teeth with this bodacious Buick and hasn’t looked back since. “I just love driving it!” he enthuses. As befits Buick’s top-of-the-tree model, it’s dripping with all the bells and whistles Flint could shoehorn into their flagship. Power comes from a four-barrel 455cu in V8 and of course there’s power steering and power brakes, as well as air con. That dazzling Burnished Bronze paint sure will look a treat on the Classic American stand at the NEC in November, so make sure you come along to check it out and meet Adam! Busy, busy, busy! The Surrey Street Rodders have got their prize-giving down to a fine art with John Price doing the honours and there being no more than a dozen or so awards to be given out (swiftly) meaning it’s not a protracted painful affair like at so many other shows. And with that, it was all over for another year. Hats off to the Surrey Street Rodders for another belter event! ★

Words and photography: Will Shiers Our intrepid salvage yard explorer brings you junkyard jewels from across North America. 1. Surrounded by fellow Studebakers, a relatively intact and solid 1959 Lark four-door sedan patiently awaits rescuing from a New Mexico salvage yard. 2. It says ‘63’ on the windscreen, but the grille identifies this Ford Thunderbird as a 1962 model. Then again, I’m not too surprised by the mistake, as the yard owner who accompanied me on my visit wrongly identified a Renault 4CV as a British car. Check out the red AMC Pacer in the background. You certainly don’t see many of these in salvage yards any more. 3. Its licence plates say Idaho is famous for potatoes, but in my opinion the state is also famous for rust-free classic cars. This 1968 Dodge Dart was found in a garden by the roadside, and unlike the badly disfigured Disco 2 in the background, is in exceptional condition. 4. We’re in Dallas, Texas, and I’m puzzled as to how the roof damage was inflicted on this Pontiac Catalina. It is one of four 1964 Catalinas in the yard, including a rare but badly damaged convertible.

5. Apparently this 1966 Dodge D100 truck was still working for a living on a nearby ranch until about 2012, and was actually driven into the Colorado yard it resides in. 6. I found this 1962 Plymouth Valiant outside a bodyshop in Ely, Nevada. The town was founded as a stagecoach station along the famous Pony Express route. This mail service, which actually only lasted for 18 months (1860 to 1861), travelled west from here to Carson City. Today US50 follows roughly the same route and has been dubbed ‘The Loneliest Road in America’, due to low traffic volumes. 7. With its loose headlights and smashed windscreen, this 1973 Plymouth Duster is looking particularly sorry for itself. That said, Idaho’s High Desert climate has been kind to the metalwork, and there’s not a spot of rust visible. 8. All American Classics of Vancouver, Washington has no less than 200 Camaros, Trans Ams and Firebirds, ranging in age from 1967 to 2002. If I had to guess, I’d say this Camaro was built in 1987. 9. Judging by the way that the roof has completely rusted through, I reckon this rare 1946 Buick Super Sedanet two-door fastback has spent a lot of its life upside down. Back in the day this car had a top speed of 74mph, managing 60mph in a shade under 20 seconds. 10. Here’s another one from All American Classics. It’s a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme two-door hardtop, and what’s left of it is in exceptional condition. It arrived in the yard in 2017, having incurred collision damage to the front nearside.

The author, John Baechtel, a former editor of Hot Rod magazine, was researching LSR wheel- driven cars for a proposed technical book on the subject. As Goldenrod was nearby, he approached the museum for permission to take detailed photographs.
