Addicted to Scraps by Bonnie Hunter What do you do with all the scraps you save? “Use them!” declares Bonnie. Square Pegs Along with saving scraps in easily usable strip widths i my Scrap User’s System (1½\", 2\", 2½\" and 3½\" strips a where it starts!), I also save individual squares in the same sizes as my strip widths. These scrappy squares are endless in variety. They often come from the ends of strip sets or are trimmed down from smaller scraps. They come out to play often as block centers, block corners, cornerstones in the sashing, pieces used in different Leader & Ender projects to make 4-patches, 9-patches, 16-patches, and more. In Square Pegs, I have used 2\" squares for the block center, and 1½\" squares for the side sections and corners—pulling the squares ready to sew from my bins of squares by size. Do you save strips and squares? It’s easy to start! And the places they can end up are endless. Square Pegs would make a great Leader & Ender project. Set it straight with sashings and cornerstones—or go wild! Try using it as an alternate block matched with another 6\" finished block. Want more fun? Put it on point and watch the magic happen. Best of all? Look, Ma! No triangles! 70 Quiltmaker • July/August ’22
