AUGIUSSSTU2E01459 THE BEST OF A MAXIM DECADE: THE TRENDSETTERS Deadliest Catch CONOR McGREGOR, the UFC’s quick-fisted, fast-talking fighter, takes a style detour on the California Coast… Words by M AT T B E R I C A L Photographed by R O B E R T W YAT T Styled by WAY N E G R O S S 58 MAXIM.COM.AU

Conor McGregor knows how to make a statement. Just two years and five fights into his UFC career, the Irish featherweight has gone from relative unknown to the most electrifying character in the sport. Yes, the 26-year-old [now 33] is a brutal, efficient fighter with an eclectic array of techniques and a knack for knockouts [at the time of printing, 15 of his 17 wins come from TKOs, including four of his five UFC wins. Of course, Conor has since become a featherweight and lightweight double-champion – the first UFC fighter to hold UFC championships in two weight classes simultaneously). But his meteoric rise owes as much to his mouth as to his fists, knees and feet: McGregor is a sneering, trash- spewing, over-the-top showman more akin to a top-card professional wrestler than a cage fighter. Often outfitted in three-piece suits, he riles up fans with crazed monologues, taunts fighters mid-match with a wagged finger and boldly predicts how long it’ll take him to incapacitate opponents (usually two minutes, but even if foes don’t tap, that’s about the time McGregor “sees their eyes dim,” as he puts it). “My success isn’t a result of arrogance – it’s a result of belief.” “What can I say? I’m a talker,” he says. His unique brand of bombast has earned him the title of the Emerald Isle’s most googled athlete, not to mention a freshly inked Reebok contract, a worldwide legion of crazed, flag-waving supporters, and, this month, [at the time of writing] a title shot against featherweight champion José Aldo at UFC 189. “My success isn’t a result of arrogance – it’s a result of belief,” says the 66kg [now 77-80kg] pounder, whose lean frame and wild-eyed stare make him look like some long-ago warrior who drinks ale from the skulls of conquered kings. “My belief is what brought me here; it’s my most powerful ally. I knew I’d be in the UFC since I started my career.” Born in Crumlin, a scrappy suburb of Dublin, Ireland, McGregor, who, despite his antics, is stoic and poised away from the cage, says he’s always had an “insatiable curiosity for combat”. As a boy, he bounced from gym to gym, learning everything from capoeira to muay Thai. After a stint as a plumber, McGregor pursued MMA full-time and eventually made his way to the European circuit, where he earned the nickname “Notorious” as well as the lightweight and featherweight belts. He joined UFC in 2013 and was quickly recognised for his skills in both combat and scene-stealing. “I have the greatest job in the world,” McGregor says. “I get paid loads of cash for beating the crap out of people. And I’m very good at it.” ■ (Above) Jacket and jeans, Marc By Marc Jacobs; sweater, Gant; Beanie, Asos; Bracelets and ring (worn throughout), Scosha; Watch, Tudor; (Below right) jacket and sweater, Nautica; Jeans, Ag Jeans; Watch, Tudor (Opposite) Sweater and pants, Botte Gaveneta; T-shirt, Canali At Blooming Dale’s; Beanie, Binge Knitting; Watch, Citizen MAXIM.COM.AU 59

Midwestern males. Maybe it’s because I make it a rarity; but, I mean, it’s not like I wear a T-shirt when I go swimming. You’ve done a few movies with Jennifer Aniston... Yeah, in Horrible Bosses, my character sleeps with her. But playing a stripper in We’re the Millers, she looks amazing. It’s such a vulnerable thing for somebody to do. I mean, I never take my shirt off — even on Saturday Night Live. You started in the SNL writers’ room. Why not write a movie for yourself? Kristen Wiig did a great job of that with Bridesmaids. On SNL you create, you destroy and keep looking forward, because there’s no time to think. Your first fight was over a bird, right? Yeah. I was just a kid and this guy stole one of my birds and killed it. Ripped his head off, threw the blood on me. And I started fightin’ with him. But pigeons helped me focus, kept me off the streets. Your TV show Taking On Tyson is about pigeon breeding. That’s pretty weird. It’s like horse racing. Once it’s in your blood, you can’t help it. I have friends from Afghanistan who’ve had birds in their family for 800 years. People say they’re rats with wings, but pigeons are fighters! A kookaburra could take one. You had that tiger in The Hangover. What pets have you had for real? I had six tigers, a mountain lion, a hawk, an eagle, a ferret, a giant snapping turtle. But I have children now, so I need to be particular. I can’t have any lions. That’s the problem with kids these days — not enough lions in the home. Any more movies in the works? I have a role in Men in Black III — I’m an alien. I’m ecstatic. Aliens are aliens. But whatever kind of alien they make me, I’ll just escalate it. I’ll make it an even more spectacular alien. Did you ever think you’d end up acting? I used to take myself too seriously. If anybody laughed at me, the guy was going to the hospital. Now I think it’s cool. It’s not bad laughing at yourself. You have ups and downs, so enjoy as much as possible. Life’s too short. ■ 7 6 MAXIM.COM.AU

WOMAN OF THE WORLD “I like a man with super- smart style, who leads a 8 2 MAXIM.COM.AU healthy lifestyle and has a great sense of humour.” You look stunning. When do you feel sexy? I think confidence is sexy. Confidence makes you not afraid of other things and belief in yourself is the best charisma. What is your best asset? A happy and healthy body. What would people be most surprised to know about you? A lot of people ask me where I am originally from. As I mentioned earlier, I’m from China, and an interesting fact is that I actually won the women’s basketball championship in my province level in China and then entered the NCAA women’s basketball in the United States. I just love sports. That explains those long legs, then! What have you learnt about men over the years? The way they think sometimes is different to women. Men tend to try and provide a solution instead of just listening when there’s a problem. Just like the book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus describes. What’s one thing men should always know about women? A woman’s body is her own choice. What do you look for in a man? I like a man with super-smart style, who leads a healthy lifestyle and has a great sense of humour. Describe your ideal date. Get dressed nicely, go to the art gallery in the afternoon and then have some Italian food for dinner. Nice. What can we get you to drink? A passion fruit Margarita! Who is your girl crush? Kristen Stewart. I just think she is pretty cool! What’s next for you? Do you have any exciting projects on the horizon you can share with us? Yes! I have movie that I was in coming out next year – it’s called Models Wanted and I can’t wait to see it in the movie theatre! I want to do more movies in the future because they are always fun. And, of course, I also want to do more fashion all over the world, maybe Paris and Milan soon. ■
