HOMES . LISB ON In Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, you’ll 4 see plenty of Pombaline-style buildings – 1755 structures of up to four floors with arcades on the ground floor and balconies on the Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo 4 first floor and attic. This style – the native architecture of Lisbon – arose in the 5,166 3 aftermath of an earthquake in 1755, when Joana Aranha under the directive of Sebastião José de Joana Carvalho e Melo, marquês de Pombal, the devastated city was revived with these new, Joana anti-seismic buildings which have a strong neoclassical character. Located within a traditional Pombaline building, this 5,166 square foot, three-storey residence with four bedrooms and two terraces, was the perfect starting point for Lisbon-based interior designer Joana Aranha to create a vibrant and soulful home that marries a diverse range of cultural influences. “We restored the entire building, reinvented it using references from similar buildings, and revived the memory of the Pombaline architecture through the plasterwork,” she says. 58

HOMES . LISB ON Her clients – a couple who love to travel and collect art and antiques from around the world – gave her and her team absolute creative freedom. Their only request was for the inclusion of a space they could use for hosting events, and as a home cinema. “We were inspired by our clients’ cultural backgrounds and love for travel. This helped us set the mood for this project,” says Aranha who used a wide range of colours, and materials such as Portuguese tiling, Italian stone, wallpapers, and a collection of antique pieces sourced from around the world to create a beautiful and eclectic home. Aranha and her team rearranged the floor plan of the interiors, and added new bathrooms, kitchens, doorways, and wardrobes. They also included an elevator for convenient movement. The interior layout of the residence is similar to a typical London town house. On the first floor is the communal zone, which includes the living room, a kitchen and dining area, a powder room, a front porch, and a small garden. The private zone, which contains the four bedrooms, are located on the second floor, and the cinema and event space the clients wanted are located on the third and topmost floor, which also includes an additional small kitchen, dining room, and two terraces. Awash in shades of terracotta, ochres, light blues, beige, and other neutral tones, the Joana Joana living room is furnished with a mix of vintage pieces such as an antique French cabinet dating back to the 19th century, and contemporary pieces such as armchairs by Baxter. An artwork by Sika Portuguese artist Gerardo Burmester brings texture and volume to the space, while patterns Eleanor Home are subtly woven into the composition with an Andre Du Dauphine fabric upholstered antique armchair and embroidery and printed pillows. Joana 3 The kitchen features white cabinets with coloured Indian glass handles and custom handwritten details in Portuguese and English, an electric green glass cabinet, and an elongated Azulejo aged chestnut wood dining table with an embossed mosaic designed by Aranha which is Joana complemented by modern leather armchairs. Above the dining table, five lamps made with recycled plastic bottles add pops of colour to the dining set-up. “These handmade recycled pendant lamps were bought from a sustainable brand that combines used PET bottles with traditional weaving techniques from different parts of the world. The colours and artisanal touch of these lamps were exactly what we imagined for this space.” The living, kitchen and dining areas all open out to a bright front porch. On this porch, wooden Sika outdoor furniture is combined with an antique mirror, Eleanor Home wall lamps, and an Aranha custom-designed coffee table that doubles up as a fireplace. In the dining room, an aged wooden table with embossed brass details and brass legs is paired with black and white striped chairs from Aranha’s signature collection. The bright and spacious cinema and event space on the third floor, which follows a black and white colour scheme, was conceived as a second living space that looks out to one of the terraces. * JULY 2O22

“The colour scheme for the bedrooms was informed by different aspects of nature. The Joana predominantly green-coloured master suite was inspired by the Amazon rainforest.” tadelakt 18 For the “blue room”, the inspiration was Portugal’s famous blue and white Azulejo tiles. The Azulejo fauna and flora of Brazil set the tone for the “coral room” where an installation of butterflies on the wall enlivens and adds interest to the concept. And finally, the “patchwork room” is covered Joana with wallpaper in a mix of warm and earthy colours. The project’s material palette includes Portuguese tiles, worked plasters, various Portuguese and Italian stones, woods, wallpapers, and antiques that come together to create a home that Aranha likens to “an authentic living postcard with influences from around the world”. “Design as a reinterpretation of cultures is what we do,” she says. “We used different materials from different cultures such as Moroccan-inspired tadelakt plaster on the walls of the suites’ bathrooms, Italian marbles, Brazilian coconuts that were transformed into lamps in one of the bedrooms, and of course, 18th century Portuguese Azulejo tiles, which we applied in the bedside tables of the blue room. Each room represents a different experience, but the whole house conveys a coherent design narrative.” * JULY 2O22

HOMES . ZHE JIA N G The lady of the house wanted a place where she could just kick-back and relax, a glorious and glamorous sanctuary for the times when she was not busy taming the urban jungle outside her door. Yu Qiang & Partners and EK Design got the message, combining their modernist sensibility and design flair, and transforming a two-storey duplex in Zhejiang Province, China, to fit this vision. “The female client craves freedom and wants to follow her love for art and fashion in the private resort residence. The idea was to craft an environment that’s elegant and serene, able to generate richness and a sense of belonging,” says the design team. The task up front was restructuring the spacious penthouse made up of two units that were purchased by the client and sprawled 6,996 square feet in total area. “The layout was fragmented and scattered – way too rigid for our design concept to work. The space divided symmetrically by four pillars also resulted in a lack of fluidity,” notes the design team. 70

The fact they wanted to protect the house’s surrounding environment meant that a complete gutting of the structural backbone was out of the question, and it prompted some unorthodox thinking from the creatives. “We approached it by way of ‘deconstructivism’, using the available range of artworks and furniture to define the functionality of each zone,” they explain, referring to the postmodern architecture style emerging in the 1980s and characterised by a loss of continuity and symmetry. As it transpired, breaking down the penthouse’s constructed structure unleashed infinite possibilities, allowing the team to play around with forms and functions. While the four solid pillars remain intact, the abode is now teeming with asymmetric, three-dimensional and curving forms; the interplay of light and shadow accentuated by an enviable slew of artworks and designer furniture. “By extending and reshaping the space, the residence now accommodates the many functions of a private resort, including a guest 6,996 * JULY 2O22

HOMES . HON G KON G “The clients are a young couple who live with a pet. I’ve known them for a long time and understand their love for simplistic design and clean lines,” says Maggie Mo & Jay Leung, directors of Starz Pasha, which was tapped to design their high-end residence in Kau To Shan. “They craved a living space that has tons of character. It inspired us to curate a minimalistic space with black, white and grey undertones. “Taking inspiration from the owners’ wine passion, we integrated the five processes of winemaking – picking, pressing, fermentation, clarification, and bottling – into the interiors.” Though the homeowners have a soft spot for black, white and grey tones, the design team embellished the space with gorgeous burgundy, a deep reddish-brown shade resembling its eponymous wine varietal, which lights up the overall space, and highlights the homeowners as knowledgeable wine professionals. The first task was remodelling the home space. “Given the owner and his wife live only with a pet, we turned the initial four bedrooms into a master bedroom and a guest room,” Mo says. “The couple are looking to have children on the way, and they like inviting family and friends over from time to time, so we reserved a guest room for that purpose.” Entering via the entrance, one is greeted by a small bar created for the owners: the sleek chandelier atop the bar-top brings to mind lush branches and fruity grape vines. The vineyard- like environment, Mo says, was crafted to elevate quiet wine-tasting moments and get-togethers. At the heart of the living room is a custom-made round coffee table, inspired by old-school wooden barrels used for storing and squeezing grape juice. Surrounding the coffee table are wooden slats emulating the curves of the concave and convex on the wooden barrel surface; the short columns protruding on the table-top are metaphors for the tools for crushing grapes. “The design fulfils both aesthetic and practical purposes. That short column is actually a handle for a lid, under which is a small storage space that can store TV remote controls, light blankets, 80

“Given the owner and his wife and the like, keeping the house clean and tidy.” live only with a pet, we turned Winemaking also informed the bubble- the initial four bedrooms into a master bedroom and a guest room” shaped lamps adorning the minimalistic, elegant dining room. During the second fermentation of wine, carbon dioxide generates and gets dissolved in an instant, resulting in gurgling bubbles, and the process was what inspired the design team to add the bubble-shaped lighting pieces to the area. As the wine matures, brewers strain the wine through a fine sieve to get rid of the small particles and sediment in the finished product. It’s an integral step for a better quality and tasting wine, and the design motif of the guest room is a testament to that. With a natural and pared-down style, the chandelier nearby the bed has a lampshade made of a mesh screen, echoing the wine- brewing process while softening the light, and creating a warm and cosy ambience in the private realm. “The original idea was adding a cloakroom to the master bedroom, but due to the limited space, we turned the attention to the island cabinet, creating a space that resembles a walk-in closet.” As for the large wall-side closet, the team custom-made a handle in the shape of a wine bottle to embody the final step of wine brewing. “The biggest challenge in the whole project was incorporating abstract concepts into practical designs. To create a natural and harmonious environment; adding value and meaning to the spaces was no easy task,” Mo concludes. “We are more than delighted to have created a home that fits the homeowners’ lifestyle and requirements.” Meandering through the chic residence, one not only comes to understand the intricacy of winemaking, but what a well-designed modern home can bring: dashes of burgundy red against a black, white and grey ethos; flexible and aesthetically appealing spaces; and the beauty of pared-back serenity. THE NEW REALITY BY JENNIFER CHAN PHOTOGRAPHY JASON TO Digital artist Isaac Spellman on his ideal metaverse home, and his idiosyncratic take on NFTs ӆсِ‫ڸ‬ਲ਼बрኊԲ䩛Isaac Spellman䩜‫ج‬ภјْЂЅϡׄཡዚр Ever since the social giant formally known as Facebook Facebook announced its ambitious plan to tap the Isaac Spellman metaverse, the term has been all the hype. But what does metaverse truly mean? Gaga Super Bowl Lady Vivienne For Isaac Spellman, a digital artist known for his whimsical, colourful, and widely imaginative paintings that favour style Westwood adidas REEBOK icon Lady Gaga, and a wealth of fashion brands from Vivienne Westwood, adidas to Reebok, the metaverse is a platform that 1992 meta universe allows him a joyful escape “from the boredom of the reality” and into a fanciful realm where creativity is limitless – the approach 2018 1 he takes when creating art. Ready Player One VR Indeed, limitlessness is what the metaverse is all about. Oasis The term was first mentioned in a 1992 sci-fi novel “Snow Crash”, combining two words “meta” and “universe”. avatar Two decades later, a rudimentary prototype of metaverse Artzioneer Dune NFT was found in the digital game “Second Life”, developed by NFT Dunity K11 Linden Lab. Intended as a platform for players to lead a virtual life, the platform allows players to interact with each other via Dunity a digital avatar, as well as to entertain, shop, appreciate arts, or even build properties to make their virtual lives feel more 3D like home. Yet, without a decentralised system to store digital data, and an immersive sensorial experience, it remains largely Mars House a platform for gaming purposes. Then in 2018, a more completed concept of the metaverse was crystallised in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi movie “Ready Player One”, where the adventure story unfolds almost entirely in a virtual universe, billed “Oasis”. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Oasis is meant to be a utopian enclave where the masses spend most of their time trying to get away from the hellscape of the physical realm. It comes with a head-to-toe haptic suit that delivers realistic touch sensations in the game just as in reality, creating an immersive adventure experience that combines living, gaming, and socialising. The concept of Oasis is widely considered one of closest to what the metaverse is supposed to look like when matured. * JULY 2O22

LIFESTYLE . CONVERSATI ON Such fantasies brought to life by sci-fi films have deeply informed Spellman’s work. Earlier this year, the artist unveiled his first NFT collection “Dunity” – a polyptych of digital illustrations inspired by the 2021 movie “Dune” – via NFT NFT marketplace Artzioneer, alongside a dynamic showcase on a carousel device at K11 that helps tell the tale of the series. Just like “Dunity”, the showcase of crypto art today remains largely in the physical realm, animated by the likes of projectors and digital screens. But with technologies such as holographic and haptic devices developing fast, we will soon be able to “walk” into a piece of art, and take in what the artist wishes to convey via a much more immersive viewing experience in a lifelike 3D simulation. If the metaverse is the way forward, it’s only natural that virtual homes will Cube become popular. From The Sims, to Gardenscapes, digital games that offer players a platform to build virtual homes have been met with huge fanfare, signalling that there could be a deep desire within each of us to have a second home in the digital realm. Not to mention the virtual “Mars House” has also been put into real use as it is now available for rental purposes. For Spellman, home means a private, free space to create art where creativity is unleashed. We invited the artist to imagine his ideal home in the metaverse for this feature (shown on the previous page), where it offers us a glimpse into his Edenic creative refuge. From there, we chat about art in Hong Kong, and why, as a digital artist, he remains suspicious of NFT art. Gravity Could you explain to us your ideal home in the metaverse? I conceived my home in the “Drawing is my cure for metaverse as a cubicle with infinite space, where the laws of physics and gravitation no longer apply. In the metaverse, homes loneliness. The idea comes from the Canadian sci-fi horror movie series “Cube”, NFT NFT in which the cubes unlock a slew of potential dangers, only that my cubes NFT adopt a much more upbeat tone. NFT NFT Your first foray into NFT met with great success. Two of the sextet NFT NFT collections, including the “Realities” and “Steel Mind”, were sold at HK$39,000 and HK$16,900 respectively, excluding the costs of Mystery Box. What inspired the collection? The concept of my first NFT collection “Dunity” is built upon the six “Infinity Stones” from the Marvel series, namely the Space Stone, the Mind Stone, the Reality Stone, the Power Stone, the Time Stone, and the Soul Stone. The six colourways of the gems govern each of my drawings. The “Realities”, among the two sold pieces, portrays two polarising lives charted by the leading character. Although there are two personalities living in him, it doesn’t make it less him. It’s a great honour to have buyers willing to pay for my work. Yet I’m still perplexed about the future of NFT. There’s a lot of hype around NFTs in the art world, but there is little art value in them. It seems to me very much a playground of investment only the rich can afford. Collectors and investors don’t seem to care much about the artistic merits of the work, but the resale values. In most cases, NFTs that sold for a good price are mostly created or endorsed by celebrities. 86

I guess companies choose to work with me for my virtuosity, creative ideas, and good sense of colour. Reality is too boring, so I fill my alternative world with bursts of colour. In truth, I wasn’t good with colour in the early stage of my career. My early works are mostly governed by neon colours, rather unvarying. I’m now much more confident working with different colours. Does Hong Kong have what it takes for digital artists to grow? It has gotten better in recent years. I think people in Hong Kong respect artists in general, and they are willing to buy art. For commissioned projects, brands allow me enough space for creativity, making changes only when necessary. This is a form of respect and I truly appreciate it. What do you think is the biggest value of digital art? It must be the narratives. All my artwork * JULY 2O22

Situated in the heart of the vibrant Victoria neighbourhood, Westminster Fire Station comprises two connected buildings – the traditional “Fire Station” that houses six apartments, and a new building known as the “Station House”, which offers 11 apartments. The exterior of the Station House features rows of custom-made iridescent glazed bricks as a modern interpretation of the Edwardian Portland stone that graces the adjoining Fire Station, with bespoke brass screens adorning the rear façade. Bridging the two buildings is an enclosed residents’ courtyard, which was once the turning circle for the engine bays and stables for horses. Led by Marino and Jennifer Beningfield, from Openstudio Architects, the development sees a tasteful blend of old and new, juxtaposing iconic features from the old fire station such as the exposed steel beams, original glazed brick tiles and the three original carriage doors (one of which serves as the residents’ entrance) with contemporary elements. Herringbone pattern can also be found throughout the development as a nod to the building’s former life. Westminster Fire Station is well-connected to the rest of London, with St James’s Park Station, Victoria Station and the Westminster Station all within walking distance. Residents can also enjoy fine dining on their doorstep, with the fire station’s former Engine Room now turned into Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar’s new restaurant Mathura.
