[ Expert advice ] A well-maintained Mini, Reducing fuel with a nicely-tuned engine consumption and sensible use of power, is the way to help keep fuel Due to the current economic consumption to the minimum. conditions I, like many others, will have to ease off a bit in the amount I spend on my Mini and the amount I drive it. I still intend to use it and to maintain it well but wondered if you have any tips to cut the cost of Mini ownership whilst still enjoying it to the full? Freddy Davies This is a good question as, sadly, the cost of living rise will have a major impact on a lot of us. There are a number of things that can be done to help keep the cost of running your Mini down, ranging from very small to more drastic. The first thing is to keep maintaining the Mini to the highest standards, making sure that the engine is correctly set up and that the tyre pressures are correct. This will ensure maximum efficiency and minimum fuel consumption. I would also recommend using TOP QUESTION 998 tuning programme I bought a 998cc Mini a few years back and have driven it sporadically since then while I was saving up to improve the performance. It drives quite well but it is slow and the brakes also need improving. What is the best way to go about starting to tune the engine? Bronze Yellow, which was really orange, and the equivalent from other car manufacturers, suddenly became the colour to have. Lots of new Minis appeared in Bronze Yellow and the craze went a lot further than new cars. Resprays in Bronze Yellow were commonplace. He pulled out the split pin securing the castle nut then reinstalled the wheel. Lowering the car to put weight on the tyre, Eli used a large socket to loosen the castle nut, raised his Mini again and steadied it with an axle stand on each corner. He removed the damper, disconnected the upper and lower ball joints then detached the track rod end. With all this apart he was able to pivot the hub out of the way. He supported the hub on a small box to give access to the driveshaft without disturbing the hydraulic brake system. I gave him a hand by crawling under his car and knocking out the pot joint, causing the driveshaft to release. With the driveshaft on the workbench he was able to dismantle, clean and inspect it accurately. He installed new inner and outer rubber boots and used the supplied grease pouches to re-grease the moving parts. He replaced the all-important differential oil seal with hopes that it would actually resolve the oil leak. When he purchased the Mini it had Mini Sport Adjusta Ride trumpets installed on the rear but retained the original front trumpets. In a box of parts that came with the Mini, Eli found ‘new’ adjustable trumpets. These front Adjusta Ride trumpets were still in their original 1990’s packaging so, while the driveshaft was out, we took the opportunity to replace the front trumpet.
