The Man, The Boy, and The Donkey Illustrated by Sonam Tobgay

Once a man and his son were going to the market to sell their donkey. As they were walking along the way, the group of travellers pointed at them and laughed. One of the travellers said, “Such a fool to walk when you might as well ride the donkey.”

So the man put the boy on the donkey, and they went on their way. Soon, they passed a group of old men, one of them said, “I told you, there is no respect for old people these days. See that lazy boy, he lets his father walk while he rides the donkey.”

So the man ordered his boy to get off and got himself on the donkey. After some time, they passed two women. The woman looked at the man, “How can you let your son walk while you ride the donkey?”

The embarrassed man now took his son on the donkey with him. Now both the man and the boy were riding the donkey. As they were about to reach the market again, many people shouted at them in anger. One man said, “The poor animal. They are more able to carry it than it can carry them.”

The Man and the Boy quickly got off the donkey. When they reached the market, everyone burst into laughter as they came carrying the donkey hung from the poles. Everyone came to watch the strange sight. They came closer and pointed at the donkey and laughed.

The donkey started kicking and braying, and when they reached the bridge, the rope got loose, and the donkey fell over the bridge. The man and the son looked at each other and then the drowning donkey. Then the two went back home sad. While trying to please everyone, the man pleased no one, and he also lost his donkey.

Moral: Please all, and you will please none.
