You will regularly recalibrate your coordinates as unexpected twists and turns compete for your time and atten- tion. But now you are in charge and you have the power to decide how you’ll respond. One day you will look back in awe at how far you’ve come. Your life map and the beautiful landscape that results will ground you through life’s challenges. SECTION TWOyour beliefsLife Mapping Workbook 7

W hatever you believe about yourself on the inside is what you will manifest on the outside. —John AssarafLife Mapping Workbook 8

YOUR BELIEFSWhat we believe in and how we stand strong in our convictions are what make us authentic. Our beliefs are at the core of who we are as human beings and form the foundation of lifemapping. Confidently navigating through life requires a set of strong, sturdy beliefs. Living a life where you’re in control of your final destination begins with understandingyour beliefs. Beliefs are like the deep, gnarly, twisting, turning roots that anchor the biggest oak treessecurely in place for hundreds of years. Roots form the base structure of a tree, but they are alsointerdependent on the other parts of the tree living healthfully to find harmony. Our beliefsallow us to live out our intended purpose. And, like roots are dependent on other parts of thetree to flourish, our beliefs depend on our actions and character working together to supportour most ideal self. There are two parts to the belief question: 1. Discovering your beliefs about humanity in general 2. Understanding your individual beliefsMost people would live radically different lives if they unequivocally knew and believed with-out a shadow of a doubt that there was a distinct reason for their life. Beliefs drive everyhuman behavior. I would like you to begin your Beliefs List by asking the most basic question of all: Howdo you think it all began? What do you believe? Could it be the work of God, the Big Bang,or some other theory? Your work is to resolve the question to your own satisfaction. Your idea of how life began will help you formulate your concept of the purpose of life ingeneral, and eventually—with the knowledge of your passion, pains, gifts, and what brings youtrue joy—of your individual purpose. People will debate the merits of religion versus science for all of eternity, but, ultimately, what you need to ask yourself is: What do I believe? Here is a good working definition of “belief ” from Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary: Belief: something that is accepted, considered to be true, or held as an opinion. If you have the conviction and accept something to be true, it should be included in yourlist. Every time you add a new belief, ask yourself why you believe it. Your answer will lead youto deeper, more basic beliefs. The idea behind making a Beliefs List is to create a list thatwholly encompasses your major beliefs. There is no correct number of beliefs. However, if astranger reads your list, they should have a good sense of you, your idea of how it all began, what you think the purpose of humanity is, and your individual beliefs.Life Mapping Workbook 9

State your beliefs in a positive manner. There is no room for doubt in a belief. It is helpfulto begin each belief with the words I believe. Until we understand our origin and our purpose, and develop a clear Beliefs List, we will be at the mercy of those who would influence us bydefault. Once you discover what you believe to be true, you’ll possess a powerful compass fromwhich to navigate your best life. It’s time to develop your Beliefs List. The following are some thought-provoking questionsthat may help you, as well as a list of beliefs taken from those submitted by participants of myLife Mapping Institute Workshop. They should give you some ideas as you create your ownBeliefs List. What is something you say that encapsulates what you think about life? Example: No time like the present. All you have is today. Live life to the fullest.Do you consider yourself spiritual or religious?Do you believe in God or another Higher Power?Do you have a huge dream or goal you’ve been carrying around with you that sums upwhy you think you’re here? Why are you able to feel emotions, have intellectual thoughts, and communicate withothers? What is most important to you in your life?Do you have a spiritual practice? If so, what is it and where do you practice it?Do you have certain cultural beliefs or ceremonies you participate in?Is there something about Nature that is spiritual to you? What are your beliefs about food and how you nourish your body? What are your beliefs about your physical body, your vessel through life?Life Mapping Workbook 10

Is family important to you? If so, why?Do you think you have a soul? What do you think happens to your essence or soul when you die?Do you believe in burial or cremation of your physical body? What do you love to do most? What are your most profound life-defining moments? Do they play into your beliefsat all? What do you fear? What are your beliefs about love, hate, and forgiveness?Sample Beliefs 1. I believe people should associate and communicate with others; it’s essential. 2. I believe a sense of humor can be one’s greatest asset. 3. I believe all people are interconnected and therefore their decisions affect other people.Life Mapping Workbook 11

4. I believe all people deserve respect. 5. I believe all people have the capacity to love and accept others. 6. I believe all people have the right to speak their mind. 7. I believe all people possess the capacity to do good. 8. I believe beauty is relative. 9. I believe challenging oneself to higher, more difficult levels, is the path to finding yourself. 10. I believe education leads to better decisions. 11. I believe every human is unique. 12. I believe every cruel act should be punished. 13. I believe every person needs to be loved... and needs to know it. 14. I believe every problem has a solution. 15. I believe everyone can be honest. 16. I believe everyone can find some happiness in their lives, no matter what the situation. 17. I believe everyone makes mistakes. 18. I believe everyone wants to be happy. 19. I believe everyone wants to be loved and valued. 20. I believe everyone has a purpose.ActivityOn the next page take some time to record your concept of the universe’s existence. After youhave your concept about the universe, write a statement in which you describe your concept ofthe purpose of life in general. Next, write down your list of personal beliefs. Before moving on, take one more sweepthrough your beliefs and ask yourself whether the beliefs you have written down are trulyrepresentative of your beliefs or default beliefs that belong to someone else who influencedyou. It’s natural to mirror the beliefs of those closest to us, and who had the greatest influencein our life, but now is the opportunity to decide if those beliefs still serve you today. The ideahere is to be sure you own what you’ve included in your Beliefs List. This list is yours andyours alone.Life Mapping Workbook 12
