FOREWORD T he digitalization of media has been a gambit to publications within the past few years. Despite other forms of print media such as newspapers surviving in this reformation, magazines seemed to remain in a stalemate as we no longer see printed copies of magazines. Hence, the content and focus that articles highlight has pivoted from inquisitive and eccentric themes to more of a mere mundane and ordinary subjects. Correspondingly, the nature of publishing such creations start to stray from its goal of providing enlightenment and knowledge to readers. Nonetheless, La Estrella Verde (LEV) remains here today to preserve and vindicate the essence of creation, which is to inventively inform and provide a deeper, distinct, and diverse perspective no matter what the obstacles that we may face. Serving the DLSU-D High School student body as their voice and source of information will always be the mission of LEV—being Upholders of truth and Heralds of change. The victory and success of what Eunoia is today wouldn't be possible without the beautiful ideas and establishment of a firm foundation of previous batches, and the continuous perseverance and passion of the brilliant minds of writers and artists of LEV. Consequently, we mastered the art of craft in capturing and peaking the interest of our audience in unraveling the layers and depths of truth and knowledge. Now, may we showcase our transformation and integration of progression as we present the fifth issue of Eunoia, the most anticipated and award- winning release of LEV, as it highlights the extraordinary people and stories of the student body who served as an inspiration to everyone. In this year’s installment of Eunoia, we delve into the various roles of chess pieces in the battlefield. As these pieces fulfill victorious roles and duties to their team—protecting the king, and conquering the battleground. We, too, must also realize and discern our duties to be fulfilled in life to guide us in having a purpose. Just as many possibilities, strategies, and tactics are excelled in combating hardships and battlefields, may we all exercise our minds the same way in gathering, disseminating, and utilizing the information we are provided to conquer what we are faced with. EDITOR’S NOTE M ost individuals have experienced a moment in their lifetime where the vigorous battle raging amidst the surface of one’s perception must be fought. Knowing that, each struggle—each mad dash to claim victory over the opposition is made in hopes that one will triumph over the rest. With this in mind, we, La Estrella Verde (LEV) dared to traverse the perilous battlefield of each person’s diverse encounters; thus, breathing life into Eunoia: Checkmate. With chess as its theme, the game represents a war two kingdoms have waged, with the board acting as their field of battle. As journalists who possess both creativity and the ability to relate such symbolisms into material experiences, we focused our gaze at creating a magazine which inspires imagination while maintaining a grasp on reality. Come forth and seek to declare victory over the foes and adversaries on the other side of the battlefield. Witness the different players who made such a feat possible—from the simple pawn up to the esteemed king, each piece on the board represents a vital symbol essential to one kingdom’s success in battle. And just as each piece is recognized, so too, must the constituents of the team receive recognition and gratitude for the efforts they have displayed in the making of this magazine. To the creative team who braved the arduous task of bringing art to life; to all the editors who endeavored to push forth onto this conquest; I offer you my endless gratitude. Yet, may we not forget the writers—the soldiers—who fought to bring into fruition this undertaking. Strength of mind and a heart filled with passion, you chose to dedicate many of this year’s moments in ensuring this magazine will be made into a reality. For that, a lifetime may not be enough to express how honored I am to have you all accompany me on this journey. Eunoia, “beautiful thinking” shrouded in a single word. Though the battle is wrought with struggle and perilous in its image, one is able to engrave works of art and beauty into these pages. This is what Eunoia pursues. Anielle Mendoza Features Editor

PAWN 9 Cycling down the course less taken Words by Roy Hembra Photos by Nicole Infante The first step on the pedal, one feels the resistance of the bike chain, just a few strides more to keep the momentum going—to keep the body centered through the destined course. Each hurdle makes the cyclist more determined than before, more driven, and rousing through every encounter in life. It is perhaps to see reason in every trouble, and to let it be more the reason to keep going, to see the wheels turning. For what is unforeseen in this journey may be what makes it remarkable and transformative for oneself.
10 PAWN RIDING THROUGH LIFE fiercely is something Juliana Beatriz Del Pilar (STM29), a cyclist who started her biking journey in the time of the pandemic, is ever so familiar with. As she takes on the various challenges and paths presented to her, she becomes a valiant character to the social media feeds of many. Her trip does not end there, however, as she continues to drive beyond the boundaries of what a young woman can be in this day and age. Going on the saddle A faint breeze wafts from under the tree with the smell of earth and bark following. The rubber tires laden the rubble and grit of the cement as the bike treads the road—a fist on the handle, one’s body leans toward the path ahead. Del Pilar started filming her travels in the time of the pandemic, and as these videos built up and increased in number, she made the choice to share them with the world. “Nagsimula ako mag-post ng content about sa journey ko, ‘yung mga destination na pinupuntahan namin kapag kasama ko ‘yung family and friends ko.” The platform she used initially was TikTok, and when she found that the content she posted went viral, she decided to try out other social media platforms and see where they get her. “[A]fter ng ilang months, nag-try na rin ako [mag-post] sa Facebook, though sa Youtube plan ko palang gumawa [ng channel],” she recollected. In the beginning of her work, all she had were edited clips and pictures collected from her expeditions. When one of these videos gained traction, Del Pilar narrated, “Naisipan kong i-post sa TikTok ‘yung naipon kong videos during (the) pandemic, tapos may nag-boom na isa.” She continued, “Sabi ko sa sarili ko, ‘Uy, di-re-diretso-hin ko na ‘to, kasi (na- e-enjoy) ko naman ang pag-ba-bike at (passionate) naman ako sa pag-te-take ng videos.” She saw an opportunity in something she already enjoyed doing and came to the decision to pursue this path and take it a step further. A biker’s detour One is presented with several ways to go as the road diverges. In its possibilities, one sets out to keep going in enthusiasm for travel. Serendipity is to come from the risk of a narrow overgrown trail, following neither a promise nor a certainty for success, but a venture set on a path of hardwork and perseverance.
PAWN 11 Del Pilar highlights that the value As Del Pilar moves forward in her in this ride of hers is the kindness she journey as a biker and influencer, she gained from those who raised her. She admits that she finds it challenging too, as said, “Always be kind to people, ‘yun her time is split between her academics, ‘yung laging nakatatak sa’kin.” By having biking, and her other hobbies. She said, this principle along with her, she is able “(Nahihirapan) din ako—parang nahahati to learn from the people she meets on na oras ko sa pag-ba-bike, sa hobbies, the rides she takes. 12 PAWN The never-ending cycle As one’s shoes descend on the ground, their eyes dip into the distance ahead. Gravel and grass beneath the tires breathe a sound for the future, setting foot not only in fulfillment, but also in vigor for the next voyage. What her future entails is still a burning passion for cycling, even if that flame simmers down to a tame heat. She said, “Nakakatuwa na nakaka-bike ako at nakakagawa (pa) ako ng content, isa pa do’n is ‘yung mga na-me-meet kong tao.” While she enjoys the extra benefits that biking may bring, what she genuinely derives joy from is the craft of filming her journeys and the people she gets to meet along the way. “As I enter college, (I still plan to) continue my cycling career and continue on making contents related to it,” Del Pilar stated. “I'll have to turn down my (other hobbies) and focus more on my academics since college is a new phase [in my life].” A marker of growth and a preview for her next ride, the next chapter of her life. *** The bicycle bell dings, a warning to continue riding on this path warily—to confront the road ahead but to also not forget oneself in doing so. Thus, Del Pilar imparted, “[I]t's important to give full effort on your responsibilities, but learn to also prioritize yourself.” Finding the equanimity amidst the turbulence of this journey requires a stable passion in life, for it may render the course and survival of one’s travel. “[M]ake sure that you love what you're doing. That's really important because in the long run, you'll just enjoy the process and can freely express yourself (with) it.” In steadying the bike, the wheels must keep going. Through trial and tribulation one finds the way, finishing more firmly than before. The path ahead will not always be clear-cut, but it is perhaps in the intricacy and uncertainty of the road that one may learn how to live. In the end, possibly no matter how far the destination is, perhaps the sentiment to keep close and ringing is the travel itself—the balance that one does. *Editor's Note: We thank Juliana Beatriz Del Pilar for her cooperation and valuable participation.

40 Beyond the battle’s unceasing trials Words by Anielle Mendoza Photos by Nicole Infante Arduous and laborious though the battle may be, one seeks to overcome it and rise up in triumph over fiendish enemies made in the combat zone. From one relentless trial to another in the journey of reaching that long, beheld crown of victory, the glitz and glamor of the battles won are but only facades to delude the enchanted crowd.
41 WITH A TIGHT fist clenched for her passion for singing, Breanna Rein Villapaz (STM214) is an artist meant to take the stage by storm. Yet, as the glow of the spotlight shines upon her, the shadows that trek her every move creep up slowly and silently—dogging her each step and wrenching her away from standing on the stage and displaying her talents for all to see. From one world to another Every journey has a beginning, and every war fought can be traced back to a point in time which, in this case, is a place far from the field of battle. Sword in hand and a heart filled with ardor, the queen begins to walk towards the starting line—right at the point where her story unfolds. “I’ve been singing for six to seven years,” Breanna revealed, remembering the days where it all began. “(But) I was not a singer back then; (I was) actually a volleyball varsity player.” Looking back on her humble beginnings, Breanna recalled that her past did not always line up with her present, as singing was something she had not started out with; being, instead, engrossed in volleyball. And while known as her school team’s “Captain Ball,” Breanna showed that her musical roots only began to grow while she was still immersed in the athletic world. Narrating the events, she disclosed that her first performances consisted of singing for mall shows, which was a decision influenced by her mother. “It was my mom who pushed me [to sing in mall shows]...just to give me more confidence.”

With that, she revealed the main motivation and reason for her continuous pursuit for glory. “My biggest motivation now is the people around me,” she stated proudly. “Whenever there are people na nag-me-message sakin ng appreciation… parang hindi pala walang kwenta 'yung ginagawa ko,” she continued.

46 A rejuvenated belligerence On the brink of conceding the fight and waving the white flag of surrender, comrades and friends make themselves known, once more, to the queen—reinvigorating in her the desire to become victorious. Now remembering she is not alone, she tightens her fist once more on the hilt of her blade and charges towards the holy grail in a last stand for victory. “I’m done medicating for [the lump]. I’ve already surpassed it,” Breanna stated. However, just as she eclipsed one hurdle, she revealed that another obstacle came up in the form of a new medical condition. “The thing that came up months ago was my Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), [which is what I’m currently taking medication for].” Yet, despite the countless challenges and silent battles Breanna had faced and masked in an attempt to bedazzle the masses with her voice, she has shown them that she still has what it takes to wow the crowd with her talents. “The next Saturday [after I found out I had PCOS], I competed for Southern Luzon Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SLCUAA), and…I won the champion title.” Being faced with a constant barrage of obstacles was not enough for Breanna to concede the fight, and although the battle is long, she had expressed her belief that better things will come after. “[T]here is always a rainbow after the rain,” she announced. “In life…magkakaroon talaga ng bumps along the way, but…umiikot pa rin ang mundo and ang journey [natin] (ay) never ending.”
47 “IN LIFE…MAGKAKAROON TALAGA NG BUMPS ALONG THE WAY, BUT…UMIIKOT PA RIN ANG MUNDO AND ANG JOURNEY [NATIN] (AY) NEVER ENDING. *** Though the trek ahead is filled with many more trials and labors to overcome, the queen remains steadfast and relentless in her chase for the dream she possesses. The path ahead may be long and the battlefield may stretch as far as the eye can see, but the queen is resolute in attaining her heart’s desire. It is still a long and winding road for the artist to travel, and the future may be uncertain and filled with doubt; nevertheless, Breanna is determined to move forward and steady her gaze towards even bigger and grander stages. “[T]here are no limits,” she declared. “Anything is possible. Pagka-naisip ko na kaya ko ‘tong gawin, (kahit) hindi (ko) alam kung pa’no, alam (ko na) mangyayari (pa rin ito).” *Editor's Note: We thank Breanna Rein Villapaz for her cooperation and valuable participation.

BISHOP 49 Euphonious heralds of a nestling’s cardinal voyage Words by Jose Miguel Octavo Photos by Nicole Infante On the eve of early morning flights, perching upon a lone tree one nestles, tired from a long day’s travel. A wailing call, one of a nightingale’s, gleans across the iridescent night sky—preparing for its curtain call. From humble hums to clamorous calls, odes of candor through the labyrinthine hallways of one’s senti- ments is what one hopes reaches embarkment. MAY IT BE a coincidental happenstance or one prophesied destiny in the books, a nightingale’s call is one that captivates many—leaving close and far-flung individuals with agape mouths and riveting curiosi- ty. For Gabriel Francis Gatdula (STM21), this was the case.
