Preface The cross-curricular campaign “Promoting Positive Values and Attitudes through English Sayings of Wisdom” (SOW) is organised by the English Language Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau to provide opportunities for schools to connect English Language education with values education, and enrich students’ English learning experiences and develop in them positive values and attitudes through appreciating the meaning and beauty of SOW. SOW, which include proverbs, quotes, maxims and adages, are words that provoke thinking, share insights and experience, and explore meaning in life. Centring around inspirational English SOW, the campaign aims to enrich students’ English learning experience through a variety of multimodal resources and develop in them positive values and attitudes through appreciating the meaning and beauty of SOW under the selected themes. As one of the signature events of the campaign, the SOW Creative Writing Competition was organised in January 2021 to provide opportunities for students to develop their creativity and share their personal reflection or creative work on four selected themes which echo those of “My Pledge to Act (MPA) 2020/21” (i.e. Be Grateful and Treasure What We Have, Stay Positive and Optimistic). The Competition was divided into three divisions: Upper Primary Division (Primary 4-6), Junior Secondary Division (Secondary 1-3) and Senior Secondary Division (Secondary 4-6). In the submitted works for the SOW Creative Writing Competition (Upper Primary Division), students shared their personal reflection or message(s) that echoed with the selected SOW through stories, a 4-panel comic strip letters, reflective essays and articles on a selected SOW. Creativity and thought- provoking reflections were observed in their works with some shared how their lives changed because of the good deeds performed by others. 5

Upper SOW Creative Writing Competition Primary (Outstanding Award) Division - A Lucky Escape - School: GCEPSA Whampoa Primary School Student: Kwan Ming Lok Two mice, Max and Peter were exploring an old house. Stepping into a dark gloomy hallway, a flash of black fur and claws leapt before them. “Run!” yelled Max. Scampering blindly away, Peter tumbled into a water-filled sink. “Help! I’m drowning.” Instantly Max grabbed Peter’s tail and yanked him out. Suddenly Max caught a whiff of cheese…… Snap! “Owwww my tail!” shrieked Max. Loud echoing footsteps approached. “Quickly Peter, free me.” With thorn sharp teeth, Peter speedily gnawed through the trap, freeing Max. “Thanks,” Max gasped, holding his crushed tail gingerly. “That’s what friends are for,” Peter retorted. As the saying goes: “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” 7
