GARDENS BEFORE FAR LEFT: Although on the small side, the backyard is broken down into distinct “rooms” that are extremely easy to reconfigure depending on the occasion. “We fit 90 people back here for our wedding,” says homeowner Arren Williams. Deck and fence construction, Black General Contracting. Sunny yellow Perhaps the only remarkable thing accents are found about Arren Williams and David throughout the yard Pimentel’s East End Toronto backyard was how completely unremarkable it was: a neglected patch of chest-high weeds that concealed a rusted-out play set and obscured a brick pathway that led to the back of the yard. Since neither of them is an avid gardener, they went for something as close to maintenance-free as possible when reworking the space and kept entertaining top of mind. First, they had a large two-level deck constructed in untreated cedar to accommodate both casual dinners for two and more elaborate gatherings. “For the gardens, we wanted something really easy — no weeding, no trimming,” says Arren. Enter landscape designer Joel Loblaw, who helped devise a minimal-upkeep-required garden limited to a few select plantings. Homeowners Arren Williams (left) and David Pimentel. For your next gathering, think outside the box office. Stackable, all-weather chairs? Check. Comfy throws and weather-ready pillows? Check. And bright, embossed lanterns that keep the lights on all night long? Pass the popcorn. We’re going places. See our Outdoor Living Collection in stores or in our Outdoor Living Book at pier1.ca/outdoorliving.

GARDENS 2 1. Landscape designer Joel Loblaw planted grasses 3 and trees that don’t die off in the winter months so 4 the garden can be enjoyed year-round. Tufts of switchgrass need little attention in the summer and bring soft colour and movement to the garden. In the winter, they turn a pale brown, contrasting with white snow. Honey locust trees provide a bit of shade and have an architectural look when bare in the colder months. Landscaping design, Joel Loblaw. 2. Loblaw installed an open post-and-beam arbour in the back lounge area to “promote the idea of rooms in the garden,” he says. The airy architectural feature has a sculptural presence in the low-key yard. This sunken area is floored in pale grey brick. 1 3. The 16' x 21' middle platform is the perfect setting for large summer dinner parties. The open space promotes mingling and keeps sight lines uncluttered so the entire yard can be admired at once. The lightweight Solair and Acapulco chairs here are moved about the yard as needed. Black Acapulco chair by Innit Designs, Hudson’s Bay. 4. Directly outside the home’s dining room, the upper deck houses the barbecue (not shown) and is a cosy spot for the couple to relax, with the 4'-high cedar walls offering a sense of seclusion. “I love to look down from here and marvel at how much the garden has changed,” says Arren. The staircase (below) leads from the top to middle level. Its slatted rails are a seamless extension of the upper deck’s wall, and these are echoed by walls flanking the path to the back lounge. A 5’-high storage space under the upper deck houses garden furniture and tools 5 6 SEE SHOPPING LIST 56 H&H JUNE 2015 5. Two freestanding cedar- plank “walls” lead to the lounge area, further delineating the two lower zones of the yard and creating a destination. 6. They only need to be trimmed annually to keep their form. 8 SWITCHGRASS The visual benefit of ornamental grasses can be enjoyed throughout the winter if they’re left uncut. There are yellow and hand-carved texture lots to choose from to bring a basic beige sofa to life. on dinner or console tables. Larger plans could include the addition of surface-applied mouldings SEE SHOPPING LIST throughout your house or just in places where the walls are boringly … plain. This is a fun project that only requires a good carpenter and painter, as well as a keen eye to specify the style and size of mouldings, and the best placement for them. The idea is to give your walls some “bones” for definition. Once these are installed, paint the walls, including all the mouldings, in one neutral colour like white, off-white, cream, taupe or black. I suggest you avoid using any shade that’s not a neutral. Finally, rehang your art where it looks best, ignoring the mouldings. You’ve probably seen photos of rooms from English and French houses with extensive panelled walls, and noticed how paintings are often hung over top of panelling, crossing over between one panel and the next. That’s the idea. The effect will be much more interesting than plain drywall. Now is the time to think about your outdoor living space, if you haven’t already. My best advice is to create a space for dining and lounging that’s self-contained and sheltered from rain, wind, falling leaves and bird droppings. If you constantly have to bring your cushions indoors, wipe down your tabletops and worry about leaves and debris, you won’t use your outdoor space nearly as often. The best outdoor dining areas are found under a huge umbrella, on a covered porch or under a retractable awning. Or consider a freestanding canvas gazebo that can be set up on a terrace or right on the lawn and will provide shelter all summer long. Hang strings of garden lanterns inside the tent or a few downlights that can be dimmed when needed. CONTINUED 76 H&H JUNE 2015

Though it feels like a storied family heirloom, the cottage was actually built in under a year from an existing design plan. “We had a cottage on the same lake for years, and it was great when the kids were little,” says Melissa. “But we started thinking we’d like to be on deeper water and a bit closer to the golf club in Port Carling for my husband.” After four summers of casual looking, they came across a rare empty lot in prime cottage country and jumped at the chance to buy it. Melissa quickly brought in designer and House & Home alum Cameron MacNeil, who had worked on the family’s Toronto home, to help tweak the architect’s plans and come up with a concept for the interiors. While MacNeil’s design ideas were influenced by Cape Cod-style beach houses, he didn’t want to go too trad.
