\"Out with the old!\" by Ian Finch. NEW Australian Bowhunters Association club… meet Rockingham Field Archers! The last few articles I have written for FAN UK have been about some of the fun shoots we did at Baldivis Archery Club - a club I was a member of for 10 years, had a great time with and made many friends as a part of. I also met some very opinionated people with a very poor attitude towards traditional archery and, in particular, longbows (when I say longbow I mean AFB as Australia is similar to the USA and classifies AFBs as Longbows). Now I normally shoot a Flatbow but do enjoy my Bickerstaffe when the mood takes me. We can shoot aluminium arrows in competitions and there are no restrictions on feather lengths. We are not allowed any sights or markings or bands on the limbs and have to use either gap or instinctive shooting techniques. So a challenge but I like to consider fun. So, at Baldivis Archery Club about 8 of us Trad archers decided to shoot early on a Sunday morning before it gets hot (and we are talking 6-8 months of 32+!!). We decided to set up unmarked rounds shooting at acute angles and just trying to make it hard but - dare I say - fun. Slowly we added in a few 2D and Zombies but wanted 3D, so at the next AGM we asked for a dozen 3D targets to be purchased, only to be instantly told, “We are predominately a target club”, and “It is not a good use of club funds”! We had $26,000 in the bank with no major outlays coming up… so, after a little argument, I asked for the club members to vote on it… Now - knowing I was likely to get some resistance from the target side of the club, I had encouraged all the Trad shooters to attend and - lo and behold - we went to the vote and... Surprise, surprise... we won!! A lot of target archers voted with us and we were given the ‘OK’ to buy a dozen 3D targets (much to the Committee members’ disgust and, of course, some of the more vocal old school target fraternity). I was tasked with sourcing quotes etc, and after about 3 months we had our 3Ds. As a group we decided we wanted to carry on shooting our unmarked bush shooting so Sundays became even more fun!! Now this went on for about 18 months and much fun was had. The club politics (as I’m sure you all know) go on and people feel the need to express opinions and tell you what they think about your “Fun shooting”. 52

Now let it be said - us Trad shooters are pretty thick-skinned at the best of times and we would smile and say thank you and just carry on regardless (P.S. by now the Sunday morning shoots had become so popular we were attracting nearly 20 shooters on a regular basis; and more people were buying trad bows and laughter was heard on a fun. So, at Baldivis Archery Club about 8 of us Trad archers decided to shoot early on regular basis!!). BUT, the club coach became more vocal about the “Sunday Crew” as we were calling ourselves and said many times about bad technique and poor adherence to the 10 steps!! He never once attended a Sunday shoot. so at the next AGM we asked for a dozen 3D targets to be purchased, only to be The club president however, became a regular member and loved it! 53

The atmosphere at club meetings was turning into a “them and us”. We were all paid-up members and paid our target fees, so there was nothing directly that the committee could do, so we just smiled and kept shooting. Now, Baldivis used to run a State Barebow FITA Field Shoot and its own Breakfast Field. We lost the State Barebow Field shoot due to poor attendance and unhappy archers due to the easiness of the course. The Breakfast field was also struggling so I asked if I could organise something a bit different and suggested a mixed FITA target 2D and 3D round with the 2/3D unmarked. The Club Committee response was negative to put it mildly but the majority voted yay!! So we sent adverts and invites out and set up the course. We had over 50 shooters show up and everyone said what a great shoot it was. That’s when it started to really go wrong for the committee, the President asked for “ways to fix the Club” and many shooters asked if I would take on a Social Director role. I said - in principle - yes but the committee declined to sanction the role so it was back to Sunday fun shoots for me and to be honest I was happy with that. The Field course was pretty uninspiring so a couple of us asked if we could work on it to make it more of a challenge. We got the go-ahead but were told very firmly that it had to comply with FITA rules. Fair enough, so Google Satellite pics were printed off and after many late nights of planning and days spent digging, moving targets, resetting shooting lines and a generally pushing the FITA rules to the limit, we finally had a challenging field course. It took us months to get it done with minimal help, most of the work being completed by two or three of us and a few days off work all round. We showed up one Saturday afternoon to announce the reopening of the field course only to be told by certain members of the committee that they had gone out and made changes as they didn’t like certain things about the course. Now the main culprit doesn’t even shoot field and hasn’t been seen near the field course, but he felt in his role he could make changes without any consultation and got the support from the ‘powers that be’ until we walked around the changes and found he had made some very poor decisions with the changes that he had made, especially the overshoots, putting archers in danger. The camel’s back was now officially broken and I had had enough. My membership was due for renewal in two months and it was not looking likely I would renew, so after a few discussions with the Sunday crew, we decided it was perhaps time to set up our own club. After a few beers and a lot of thinking it seemed like the best course of action. Weekly meetings followed and many discussions about constitutions, insurance and affiliations. Club structure, ideals and positions were discussed in depth and the long and short of it was that we would join the Australian Bowhunters Association (ABA), use their Constitution guidelines and apply to the local council for land to shoot on. We had already a dozen members ready to sign the dotted line. So warp forward to now and we are in the final throws of establishing Rockingham Field Archers! 54

It has been a tough few months and thankfully we have been able to shoot on one of our member’s private land to keep us sane, while trying to get the council to sign-off on our land. Ironically the land the council have identified for us is next door to the old Club! We have 35 acres of bush and scrub to try and make our club dreams come true so we created a Facebook site and invited as many of the local Trad community that we knew to join the site and see what we were doing. We already have 50 prospective members, of which 30 have joined the ABA and filled out our club applications already. We have some local sponsorship lined up and things are looking really positive. So fingers crossed - next time I submit an article for FAN UK we should be up and running and, dare I say, having FUN!!! Which is why I guess we all shoot anyway? I will miss many members of Baldivis Archery Club and wish them all the fun and success in the world. I won’t miss most of the Committee and certain members of the club who alienated the Trad archers. The Field course was pretty uninspiring so a couple of us asked if we could work on it So here we are (the new Committee)… ahead but were told very firmly that and after many late nights of planning and days spent digging, moving targets, even shoot field and hasn’t been seen near the field course, but he felt in his role he could make changes without any consultation and got the support from the ‘powers that be’ until we walked around the changes and found he had made some very poor decisions with the changes that he had made, especially the overshoots, Weekly meetings followed and many discussions about constitutions, insurance and and short of it was that we would join the Australian Bowhunters Association (ABA), use their Constitution guidelines and apply to the local council for land to shoot on. If you’re ever in Western Australia and want some challenging archery fun, come and find us - you’ll be more than welcome!! So warp forward to now and we are in the final throws of establishing Rockingham Cheers and Happy Shooting, Ian Finch - President Rockingham Field Archers. 55

FAN UK would like you to meet:- FAN UK would like you to meet:- FAN UK would like you to meet:- The lovely Ros Jones and I spent a bit of time chatting and she has, very kindly, put this together for you, our lovely readers. enjoy (and thank you Ros)! Also, our sincerest thanks go to Helen Barnes-Short for all of the photos in this piece. The Cotteswold Mounted Archers (CMA) are a friendly horseback archery club based in Gloucestershire, with a few members like myself crossing the borders from the surrounding counties. The club was set up in 2015 from a small group of friends and has been growing steadily since then. One of the founding members, Helen Barnes-Short, is now our Advanced Club Coach (and chief photographer). We are affiliated to the British Horseback Archery Association (BHAA), who in turn are members of the International Horseback Archery Alliance (IHAA). I joined CMA in December 2016 with minimal archery experience, but my own horses and a long riding history. Other members have come from an archery background but are less experienced in riding and horsemanship. The different experience levels means we are all able to offer something to help and support each other. I think anyone who wants to try horseback archery should give it a go – obviously you do need to become a competent and balanced rider if you are not already, but if you have the willingness to learn then go for it! We have a wide age range within the club, our youngest members being 9 and 11 years old and there is no upper restriction. More details of our club can be found on our website http://www.mountedarchery.org.uk/ and our Facebook/Instagram pages or to find your local club/coach you can search the BHAA website. CMA team photo at Gauchoux 62

For horseback archery we shoot barebow, with no Ros herself riding Tag Tic at Gauchoux arrow rest or shelf, and there is a wide range of bows out there to choose from. A lot of us started out with a Junior Snake bow (with the arrow shelf wrapped in foam to make it legal!), which is great as they are cheap and easy to come by – then once you have the addiction you can move on, one of the great things about being in a club is trying out each other’s equipment to find what you like – a lot of us are now shooting fibreglass bows from Ali Bow (I shoot the fibreglass Turkish Bow), they are light and smooth and won’t break the bank. Other members also have a Kaya Windfighter, a Nomad KTB and a Samick SKB. As a club a lot of our time together is spent training, either in small groups at our own bases but also The lovely Ros Jones and I spent a bit of time chatting and she has, very kindly, regularly at Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre in larger groups – last year we had our first summer camp here held over 3 days. During training sessions we are working towards our BHAA qualifications, IHAA gradings and we take part in the regular IHAA postal matches. We use a mix of ground archery and mounted training as well as spending a good amount of time focusing on the horsemanship aspect – this is one of the things that drew me to this club as ethical horsemanship is very important to me. Short, is now our Advanced Club Coach (and chief photographer). We are In 2017 CMA hosted both a regional competition and then the BHAA Nationals, at Tumpy Green affiliated to the British Horseback Archery Association (BHAA), who in turn are members of the Equestrian Centre, with many of our members taking part in both of these events. We also have a social aspect to the club, with camping over at events, meals out together and the 2017 Christmas ‘Archery Tag’ afternoon. This year (again at Tumpy Green) we are running a summer camp from August 7th-10th and the BHAA National Championships from August 31st-September 2nd. history. Other members have come from an archery background but are less experienced in riding and horsemanship. The different experience levels means we are all able to offer something to help and years old and there is no upper restriction. More details of our club can be found on our website Ros’ best shot during the IHAA canter postal match! Ros herself riding Chinngis at Gauchoux 63

As a result of Helen’s previous visits to France for training camps she was able to instigate and organise our first CMA training camp hosted by Alan Le Gall at Domaine de Gauchoux, Peyrat-de-Bellac near Limoges. This was held over 3 days at the end of May and with 12 CMA members taking part. The centre is one of the best for horseback archery, with permanent all weather tracks and plenty of well trained and well-kept horses. Under the tuition of Alan and Frédéric Luneau, 2 of the most experience horseback archers in France, each day was made up of a groundwork session followed by 2 mounted training sessions. We focussed on good balance in the saddle for all shots – front, side and back - and getting into good habits for each shot including tracking the target and finishing the shot, before trying to get quicker to enable faster shooting from canter. With a mix of abilities to start with it was great to see everyone improving in technique and confidence over the 3 days. In fact we all decided that on day 3 we were really getting into it so much that we have to stay for 4 days next time (yes, there is definitely going to be a next time)! On the last afternoon we took part in the current IHAA postal matches – for a lot of us it was our first canter postal match and we all hit targets! Aside from the archery it was a wonderful place to stay, in yurts, with excellent food, drink and company. Team photo during ground training at Gauchoux For me there are several things that make horseback archery such a special sport. A large part of it is the relationship and trust between horse and rider as you canter down the track with no reins – such an amazing feeling! Then there is the instinctive nature to the shooting, and all the challenges that go with it, but the satisfaction when you get it right. An additional bonus has been meeting such a great bunch of people via the sport, many of whom are now good friends. 64

Bellac near archers in France, each day was made up of a groundwork session followed by 2 mounted training for a lot of us it was our first canter postal match and we all hit targets! Aside from the archery it was a wonderful place Ros riding her own self-trained horse, Monkey, at home earlier this year.

E l m t r e e A r c h e r s 15 July 2018 at Giffords Hele, Meeth th 36 x 3Ds, including the 2018 South West Crown shoot:- A gloriously sunny day, a great venue and course, but where was everyone? I know we clashed with the final of the football world cup; but I cannot understand those who preferred to stay indoors and watch twenty-two grossly overpaid cheats kick a ball around when they could have been out shooting around wonderful woodland in warm sunshine. (I also think that FIFA recruited the video refs from somewhere questionable!). Still the 56 who attended enjoyed a tremendous day, with some recording their personal best scores and as a bonus as there were so few people, there were lots more delicious cakes for them to devour. South West Crown Results:- Winners of the Crown Trophies The Crown itself is awarded to the highest score of the day after factoring in the class handicap figure. This is its eighth year and the handicapping system works very well in that, even with several national champions competing, nobody has won the trophy twice…yet. The final scores are always very tight and this year saw two previous holders coming close - Penny Kennedy coming third, shooting for Lamberts Castle with 905 and Marleen Toomer, shooting for Ballands with 922 (a shade behind in second place). The winner of the Crown was Dian Kirby – Independent, with 929. The “Freddy” Junior Crown was won by Harry Jeffery – Ballands The “Jimmy” Cub Crown was won by Emily Anthony - Thornbury Unfortunately, the Junior trophy was not returned, so Harry had to make do with a substitute until we can recover it. Winning a special trophy is very nice, but it carries a certain responsibility with it. Harry was very sportsmanlike about the awkward moment of non - presentation. Eight groups entered the Team Competition which was won by South Hams Field Archers who combined the names of their shooting ground, Kitley, and its owners Mr. and Mrs. Archery. The remainder would appear to be a concise description of the archers themselves - but that could just be coincidence………… 1st: “Kitley Bastards Archery” with a combined, handicapped score of 5307:- Tony Young, Tony Cox, Andy Richard, Nicola Macrae, Tony Bristow & Dave Howell 2nd: “Familiar Faces” 5190:- Alan Hearson, Paul Inkpen, Penny Kennedy, Jane Walter, Gina Finch & Dian Kirby 3rd: “The B team” 5184:- Jenny Bellinger, Brian Bellinger, Steve Hipgrave, Warren Potier, Lyne Potier & Rae Gulliver “Famous 5 + 1” 5045 “Ashcombe Ex” 4883 “Toads + 2” 4866 “A Motley Crew” 4781 “Tavistock” 4354 We are very grateful to the Elmtree team for hosting this year’s Crown shoot. ARCHERY ON THE BIG SCREEN Throughout the decades, Hollywood has had more than just a passing interest in archery. The studios have churned out hundreds of films (some good and some quite forgettable) featuring bows and arrows in some form or other. Here is where we remind you of some of these alongside dredging up some you will have definitely never heard of!! GB Hammer Films (1960) Director:- Terence Fisher Hammer studios (hitherto noted for their horror and gore films) produced this in the wake of Richard Greene's hugely successful TV series he had enjoyed in the 50s. Hammer again has shown they were well suited for making these kinds of films. The movie is in classic Eastman colour - a Hammer favourite - and has all the usual Hammer stars. Cast:- Richard Greene - Robin Hood Sarah Branch - Maid Marion Peter Cushing - Sheriff of Nottingham Richard Pasco - Edward, Earl of Newark Nigel Greene - Little John Niall McGinnis - Friar Tuck Jack Gwillim - Archbishop Walter Oliver Reed - Lord Melton 86

This film was derived from the TV series \" The ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD \" - 135 episodes x 25 minutes, 1955 - 58. Those of you who had TV sets from 1955 to 1959 will no doubt remember the cast has had more than just a passing of stalwarts who performed in these prolific episodes. Here's a reminder:- Richard Greene - Robin Hood Alexander Gauge - Friar Tuck Archie Duncan - Little John Bernardette O’Farrell / Patricia Driscoll - Maid Marion featuring bows and arrows in Hubert Gregg - Prince John Alan Wheatley - Sheriff of Nottingham King Richard - Ian Hunter Paul Eddington - Will Scarlet This successful TV series is still remembered with great affection and had several some you will have definitely re-runs selling to many countries throughout the world. Richard Greene, a Hollywood star, brought athletic good looks and style to the part where he and his men were forever foiling the plans of the dastardly Sheriff played by Alan Wheatley. Paul Eddington, later of ‘Yes, Minister’ fame, played Will Scarlet. The theme tune that concluded each episode and recorded by Dick James: \"Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen, Robin Hood, Robin Hood, with his band of men Feared by the bad, loved by the good, Robin Hood, Robin Hood, Robin Hood.\" The ditty played to the match crowd at the Nottingham Forest Football Club for many years! 87

Overton Black Arrows’ Annual open field shoot 2018 by Steve Allam, Chairman, Overton Black Arrows www.overtonblackarrows.org Photos by Bhupinder Ghatahora (club member) After hosting the All British Field Championships just six weeks before, Overton Black Arrows were slightly concerned that entries might be down for their annual Open field shoot. However, eighty-four archers competed over the two days, which is a record number for recent years. At least 30 of these had also attended the All British – but this gave them no advantage on the newly designed course! Temperatures soared to well over 30 degrees, with the heat trapped in the bowl of the Warren. The woods were not available this year so shade was scarce, leaving archers huddling around the course in the small patches of shade they could find - but this didn’t stop the good humour and good shooting. The “Turner downhill challenge” was introduced on the 60m steep downhill shot – and three archers exceeded the current records: Alex Newnes (AFB) scored 13, Eleanor Piper (recurve) scored 16 and Malcom Rees (Compound UL) scored the maximum 18! 88

The courses set here are widely recognised to be amongst the most challenging field courses in the country. Archer's ages ranged from under twelve to over seventy-seven with some of the British Field team attending to help prepare for the World Field Championships in September. The joy of field archery is tackling a new course with a group of archers often shooting very different styles - there are so many ways to approach estimating distances, sighting and shooting that it is impossible to leave without gaining valuable tips from fellow archers. Lord Paramount William Hastings-Bass, the 17th Earl of Huntingdon gave a short speech and presented the competition medals and the awards for the Turner downhill challenge. The shoot was vis- ited by Mike Bushell and crew from the BBC to film a piece on the sport of field were slightly concerned that entries might be down for their annual Open field shoot. archery. By the end of this year Brazil will host the first SABHC - South American Bowhunter Championship to be held in São Bento do Sapucaí - São Paulo state from November 14th to th 17 2018. The organization of SABHC will be in charge of AVA - Arqueiros do Vale on behalf of Associação Field Brasil, an IFAA member for eleven years. AVA is known as CAVABH’s hostest, the largest Bowhunter championship in Brazil, for the past two years and the members of the organization are regular participants of the international championships (WBHC 2015/2017 and EBHC 2016/2018) having exchanged many experiences with the organization of these events. The SABHC 2018 will be held in a park with an enviable infrastructure, with fishing activities, horseback riding, restaurant and more than 200 thousand square meters of pine forests, native woods, lakes and small waterfalls with a pleasant climate even in the summer, providing a fantastic experience for both, the archer and his family. The schedule for SABHC consists of a bow check on first day followed by an Animal Round 3D, a Standard Round 3D and a Hunting 3D, chemical toilets, water and fruit on the course are part of the infrastructure the archers can expect, plus a supportive team in the range. The 3D targets are from LG Leitold 3D Targets, a great partner and supporter. After the end of each day the archers meet in a pleasant environment with music, food, exhibitors and can exchange their experiences. An award banquet will close the event on the night of last day. Being a regional championship under patronage of IFAA, the standard rules will be followed and guests from other nations are more than welcome. Additional information can be found on official web site: www.sabhc2018.com AVA - Arqueiros do Vale is a club founded in May/2013 and currently has 45 members. We have a very large variety of archers from Historic Bow to Freestyle Compound and we place a lot of emphasis on our children and young archers as well as invest in training and knowledge of the sport. We have a very large focus on the development of archery in Brazil, which has been growing a lot in the last 5 years. We have archers of all ages and have been continuously standing out in national competitions with several records and best marks. Specifically about me, I have been a member of the AVA - Arqueiros do Vale for 5 years and currently I am a Bowhunter Recurve and I assist Field Brasil current management in technical and technological matters. I have participated in some international championships and this year I will be present at WFAC 2018 along with the Brazilian team. ~ By our friend, Telmo Thadeu Fonseca.~ 95

nd Regent Archers Shoot Report - July 22 2018 by Dave Framingham. Thank you to all the archers who supported us, it was nice to see some new faces. We had a brilliant turn out (86), some travelling a long way and staying in B&B’s. The course was 3Ds and hessian targets. A huge thanks to our catering team who kept everyone well fed and watered! Feedback from people was very complimentary and I would like to thank those who took the time to put such nice write-ups on Facebook and NFAS. The weather was wonderful and I don’t think there were any holdups so the day went very well.
