STAFAA 3D Unmarked Indoor shoot Saturday 29th February & Sunday 1st March 2020 Location:- Oatridge Campus, Ecclesmachan, Broxburn Competition break-down:- 14 unmarked 3D animals which were shot twice. 2 animals per stance. 2 arrows per 3D were scored. The total points achievable for this round were 1120. Scoring:- Kill - 20 points, Vital -16 - points and Wound -10 points. Adults and Juniors used the red marker and Cubs used the black marker. The first session shot was the score that counted. Thank you to the lovely Linda Sutherland as always for the terrific report & for sending in the pics! 54

84 archers competed over 2 days! They had so much fun and you could feel the relaxed atmosphere and friendship. The indoor range was set out slightly different this time with some very challenging targets… the poor bald eagle had a migraine at the end of the day!! Great scores shot with 10 new records set. To the wonderful catering team, who had a menu fit for a banquet - the food was delicious and nothing left at the end of the weekend. Thank you to everyone who turned up on Friday to assist with setting up the hall... it is a massive task and clearing away on Sunday; and to the administration team for all their hard work with score cards, target groups, recording scores, medal preparation and allocation. FAN UK would like to introduce ~ Bogenbau Rockhauser ~ I recently spent some time getting to know the lovely Phil Rockhauser where he shared his terrific story, and talents, with me… & now with you… enjoy folks! Hello, my name is Phil Rockhauser and I am infected with the bow making virus. Making all kinds of different bows is not only a hobby - it is more like passion or some might say like an addiction. It is always demanding to search for the right piece of wood and to find the bow in it. Every stave holds its very unique bow in it, you simply have to discover it. The line between success and failure is sometimes pretty thin but that is something you have to deal with when you are making bows. No matter whether you are successful in the end or not, you always learn a lot - even if it hurts - but in my opinion, failure is the best teacher and it helps you towards becoming the best possible bowyer - that is all part of the great adventure of making bows. 62

I have a Masters in Electronics and was, therefore, everyday surrounded by computers and software. Working in this field often means stress and in the evenings, after hours and hours of coding and writing software, I more and more felt kind of empty. You leave the office and you are not really seeing the results of the work you have done... you cannot grab or hold it in your hands. So, I tried to find something special that I could create by myself and that would be 100% handcrafted. At the end of the day I wanted something you can see and feel; something that you can really touch and that you can hold in your hands. Having something self-made in your hands is an overwhelming and rewarding feeling, isn’t it? One of my Mollegabet-style bows made from ash. The idea of making a bow slowly developed in my head and the desire of making one became stronger and stronger. I think the passion was always there and the foundation had already been established in my early childhood. I was lucky and I could spent most of my childhood in the wonderful Carinthian mountains playing in the woods and making bows from hazel, just like kids are doing it - or just like kids should do it. So, making my first bow somehow felt familiar and it brought those special, long forgotten childhood feelings back. It immediately felt OK and still does. The cool thing about making bows is that you do not need a well-equipped workshop but just a handful of tools. My first bows were all made on a wooden table located in our garden which we would normally use to sit and have coffee at on warm summer days. Since then things luckily changed a little and I got the chance to furnish a small workshop which was really a boost in my development. 63

Over the years I have been building many bows, one after each other, always searching for new challenges and to make the best possible bow ever to leave my workshop. I am not only focussing on a certain type of bow because, in my opinion, it restricts my personal development as a bowyer. So far I have made self bows and prim-bows, composite bows as well as laminated ones. I really like to use different kinds of wood and it is always fun to create new shapes and designs. When it comes to self bows or prim-bows, I said at the beginning of my story that every stave holds a bow in it and that defines my approach to making them. My first composite bow made from horn, wood and sinew. I like to bring in my own style, of course always in accordance with the stave I am working on. I want to preserve as much as possible of the natural character which is already given by the underlying piece of wood. Corrective actions are welcome but just as much as really needed. What I mean is that the stave tells you what the bow shall look like and which design you shall choose. This is what I want to keep when making one. After successfully finishing a few self bows, I started gathering information on traditional composite bows. In my opinion they are the ultimate development in the bow history. They are combining different materials to get the most effective bows ever. On a wooden core the bowyer applies horn on the belly and sinew on the back. Finally it is great to see all the parts, with their different properties, coming together forming a highly effective bow. From the traditional composite bows, the way was not too far to modern laminated longbows. 64

One of my character bows, called Lemmy. They have more in common as one might see at first glance. Both types consist of different parts with different properties which ,when properly glued together, make up a great bow. Of course the production time of a modern laminated bow is much lower in comparison to a traditional composite bow. No matter if I make a self bow, composite bow or a laminated longbow, the finish of every single bow is very important to me so from time to time I collaborate with the Austrian tattoo artist Alex from “Pride and Glory Tattoo” in Graz to add that ‘certain something’ to a bow... that’s how the “Tattooed bow” was born. The bow is the mirror showing our personal development, our moods and thoughts during the process of its creation. Every single bow brings us one step further on the way to ourselves and a few steps further on our way to become the best possible bowyer; so keep on rocking and let’s make some bows! Wolfshead Field Archers 23rd February 2020 Thank you to all who joined us for our first open shoot of 2020. We hope that you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to seeing you again. Our shoot took place after storms Dennis and Ciara and before storm Jorge. Fortunately the weather on the day was not as bad as we'd feared but attendance was, understandably, significantly reduced. The 76 archers who took part in the competition experienced a course of 40 varied wood- land and moorland targets in the beautiful (if a little windy) surroundings of the NorthYorkshire Moors National Park. As always, thanks go to all the club members who prepared the course, acted as marshals or worked in the kitchen. Without their efforts the shoot would not have been possible. Andrew Cross 78

One man & his shoot... Barry Cheadle’s open! ~ Sunday 23rd February 2020 ~ After a breezy start, February 23rd turned into a pleasant early spring day. Archers from no less than 13 different clubs, as well as some independents, shot the 30 target course which - as always - was all 3Ds. The course was completely changed from the last layout, including the direction of travel. To my delight, for the first time ever, I was fully booked and had to run a reserve list! I also had to get some helpers on the car park. 8484

I learnt quite a lot from my last shoot, and was determined to incorporate those improvements into the February shoot. When I asked people what their favourite targets were, the deer were a consistently popular choice, so I ordered this beautiful fallow buck target which proved very popular on the day. In fact he was such a beautiful target it seemed almost a shame to shoot him! For this shoot I limited the group size to a maximum of four, and it all seemed to flow nicely without any hold ups. It wasn't a long shot, but this upright meerkat proved really tricky... >>>>>> 85

On my way around the course, I could hear roars of laughter in the distance and the occasional cheer which I took to be a good sign! There were entries in all of the classes, but Gents Longbow proved the most popular, with Karl Tonks taking first place. There was a funny moment when I called out the name for third place and a bemused John Watson emerged from the crowd, and I realised seconds later that I'd misread the score sheet and it should have been John Walton! 8468

The format of shooting the 30 3Ds in one round seems to be working quite well, and the first cards were handed in at 12.55pm. By about 2.30pm, all the medals had been awarded and people were on their way home. It was brilliant to see so many new faces, and even better to hear them ask - \"When are you having your next one?\"

“Wood Fever” All about making wooden bows and arrows By Jan Van Der Veen. There are a number of bow making books out there but Jan’s “Wood Fever” does approach the subject in a different way. “Wood Fever” is very insightful, ranging from the selection of lumber right through to the finished article. Jan’s passion really comes through, even to the point of when I was making a coffee, I was examining the trees in the garden to see if I could harvest anything! Jan’s in-depth look at the history of the European flat bow and some of our missing/lost history... as Jan states, “It has long been around”, but most would recognise the American Flat bow whilst not realising one of Europe’s oldest bow types. A good fact in Jan’s book is that you don’t need to track down expensive exotic timbers from around the globe to make a fast efficient bow. Many great bows are self-bows made from native species which are readily available. “Wood Fever” has really helped me (as a novice) to understand how to get the best out of the materials available, from taking the raw lumber to buy a pre-cut piece. The journey through the book also covers the more advanced techniques to build better and faster bows. Jan’s ability to weave the historical elements into each chapter creates fascinating stories covering the history and the bow types effortlessly. The biggest selling point for me is that as I am not a strong reader but the way Jan delivers the knowledge throughout is easy to follow, insightful - and the best part is that it is fun. The way his humour comes across shows how passionate he is about bow making, and yes it is addictive… ~ Q Review ~ 92
