Labyrinth Archers Medieval Shoot, 1st July 2018 at Poltimore House ~ Report by Colin Smithers ~ Being an atheist, doesn’t help when wanting good weather for a shoot. After six weeks of not a single drop of rain; we picked the only day when it did. It started lightly just after the shoot began but rapidly became heavier and poured down for two hours. They must have been a hardy bunch in medieval times because our flimsy replica costumes were not the ideal clothing to keep out the inclement weather and the downpour caused several archers to abandon their posts and retire. However those of a sterner dis- position continued and were rewarded with warm afternoon sunshine. The shoot was twice around 18 targets shooting from different pegs and shooting at different faces on the second circuit. The faces were mainly of heraldic and mythical beasts such as gryphons, unicorns etc. Also included were a few cut out targets, one of which was a huge fearsome red dragon being attacked by Saint George. Although the dragon was thirteen feet long by eight feet high it was still not large enough for some who failed to score on it. A big thank you to Jeanette of Poltimore House Trust who single handedly kept us all fed and watered; also for the few friends who helped us assemble the shoot and afterwards clear the course.
