As promised from my previous introduction in the February/March 2019 issue of Field Archery News UK magazine, I am here once again to discuss and show you the concepts of alternative homemade targets. May I therefore introduce, ‘Gummy’- made for club use. For me this target was more in line with the regular makes I tend to lean towards, so it felt more natural. From a glance it may seem quite complicated but it is a lot simpler than it looks. I was quite ambitious with my choice of animal but I really enjoy the low Crocodile shots on shoots so wanted to recreate it for practice. Regardless of what animal you go for, the concept remains the same. I wasn’t as disciplined with documenting this one with pictures back when I made it but I will do my best to talk you through it. For this make I used:- cardboard boxes, newspaper, PVA glue, tape (any), table tennis balls, expanding foam, a hot glue gun and a good pair of scissors. Once deciding on the animal, a good starting point is to look in books or online for images to see as many different pictures of it as possible - then you can pick and choose from a variety of photos to build the image concept. I don’t mind admitting that Gummy is a hybrid of a Crocodile and an Alligator. So for the main area that would be taking the majority of the arrows, I wanted to try and keep it as hollow as possible to start with; the best way to do this was to use a whole box. You can arch the corners and sides to make the end shape if needed, so long as there is a good hollow void to fill with foam later. 102

Once the body was made I slowly started to build up the head of Gummy using card and glue gun, again keeping a nice hollow middle and added a pair of table tennis balls for eyes. For the first half of the tail I used the same technique of tapering to the end to make a point, leaving as much space inside as I could. If you feel any parts need reinforcing, it is OK to add more card to the outside as this will only help to strengthen the finished product. You can also choose to add in partition walls to the inside, but just make a note of where these are so when it comes to adding foam you know where any potential air pockets could form. In terms of the limbs, this was back to basics. Good old papier-mâché! So, with newspaper I formed the shape of the limbs and taped them tight to hold the shape. Once I News UK magazine, I am here once again to discuss and show you the concepts of was happy I gave it layers of papier-mâché. I did five layers in total, waiting for each layer to dry fully before adding another. The last layer I used was tissue paper, but this was a personal preference and not necessary. I repeated the papier-mâché process all over the head, I was quite ambitious with my choice of animal but I really enjoy the low Crocodile shots body and tail and allowed it all to dry before I hot glued all on shoots so wanted to recreate it for practice. Regardless of what animal you go for, the of the pieces together. I then went over all of it again with one layer of newspaper and one tissue layer of papier-mâché. I wasn’t as disciplined with documenting this one with pictures back when I made it but I will Once deciding on the animal, a good starting point is to look in books or online for images then you can pick and choose from a variety of photos to build the image concept. Then it was a case of looking at the photos I picked out at the start and adding little details. In the case of Gummy, I wanted to add scales. After the final shape came together, it was time for the paint job. For the green base coat I used a cheap smoky green spray paint. Then I picked out scales and added spots with acrylic paint which I also used for his mouth and eyes. Originally I was going to leave it like this but I had some expanding foam left from another project so rather than waste it I knocked some little holes into Gummy and filled him with the lot! He was now solid! Finally, I sealed him off with a matt varnish all over. Once dry, I added clear gloss varnish to his eyes, nostrils and mouth. Gummy has been used at our club regularly and - aside from a few lost scales and a punctured lip - he is holding out great for a cheap homemade target. To see all the photos of Paul and the Zombies builds, or if you have any questions; or maybe you would like to commission me to create a target for you then please come and visit me on Facebook @LambindraStudio 104
