for Peter as sadly he has to hang up his tab being no longer able to shoot. It was an honour to have him hand out the medals and for the opportunity to say thank you for everything he has done for our great sport. The Precision Hunter round followed the same format as last year making it a very different and hopefully exciting event for all those taking part. We maintained the same basic course as for the weekend but removed one of the targets from each of the double animal stands making it a 30 3D course. It was now two scoring arrows at each target from the same peg so For the second year we decided to host an August bank holiday weekend of archery fun consistency would be key. We changed the peg allocation too, removing the wasps and hav- ing all sighted classes now off Red, wooden arrow classes off the Blue and everyone else off the White with Juniors and cubs off their normal starting pegs. We used a scoring system based upon the IBO scheme in which the very tiny central pro-kill is worth 11 and counts as a spot, what we ordinarily refer to as a pro-kill is worth 10, a kill 8 and a wound 5, thus rewarding the super-accurate shots. To facilitate this we coloured the 11 spot with bright yellow paint to make it highly visible from all shooting pegs, thereby ensuring there could be no excuse for not knowing where to aim making it a genuine test of distance judgement and archery skill. forecast heavy rain making its appearance for most of Sunday so it was wonderful to To top it all off, we applied the handicap scheme used last year to find the overall precision Hunter champion from across all individual class and style winners. The prize to that champion was a beautiful, original wildlife picture drawn by our very own, super-talented Holly Stewart. A beautiful piece of artwork, thank you so much Holly. For the first time here at Aurora we even enjoyed Saturday and Sunday night musical As last year, we were overwhelmed by the massively positive feedback on the format, everyone enjoyed it with both traditional and sighted archers loved having the tiny, visible thanks guys, spot on which to focus. As for the overall Precision Hunter Champion, that accolade was shared by two HT shooters with exactly the same adjusted score and spots – Steve Rand and Steve Hipgrave, closely followed by Ian Watkins (reigning Precision Hunter Champion) amazing folks each and every one, never ceasing to amaze us with their generosity, shooting Primitive with the same score but 2 fewer spots, extraordinarily close. Top shooting and very well done to all of these folks. Finally a huge thanks to Queen Bee Margaret Rickard who kindly acted as our fabulous Lady Paramount. So on to our next Aurora event, we look forward to welcoming you to our one day, New Year shoot on 13 January, come along and join us to work off those excess Christmas calories th and to play with your shiny new toys. Until then, shoot straight, be safe and enjoy our wonderful sport. ~ By Martin Joy ~ mix it up a bit and keep everyone guessing. At this point our sincere appreciation must go 101

~ Product Review ~ “FieldTec” Paper Faces, new from Phoenix Archery Supplies. Field Archery News UK was asked to review the new Phoenix Archery Supplies “FieldTec” Target Faces. To ensure complete objectivity of this review Hels handed the targets over to fellow Audris-Hart Field Archers club members to test. The test consisted of a comparison to traditional paper faces against the following criteria: Durability Degradation Visibility Life Cycle Cost The targets were both shot 60 times with 40 x Carbon arrows with standard field tips from a 50lb Compound and 20 x wooden arrows with traditional field tips shot from a 48lb recurve. Both were shot at from a distance of 18yds. The test faces were both photographed at the 30 arrow mark and at the 60 arrow mark. Paper Faces: Most people know paper faces and their capabilities - they are inexpensive but are susceptible to the elements and the type 1 targets shot at close range do not last and need replacing. There are other paper-based alternatives on the market using waterproof paper and other paper composites types; these are more durable to the elements but still suffer from shot degradation. Phoenix “FieldTec” Polymer Vinyl targets: (Pictured right) > > > > > > These types of targets are relatively new to the market but with developments to the printing industry. There are many alterative composites that can now be printed on giving a wider range of different more durable and hardy targets. This development and availability has driven the price down give a better offer. So how do they compare..? 104
