Delamere FA Open Shoot Results March 2020 ~ Report & pics provided by Bernie Stafford ~ Storm Jorge kept the Open Shoot in doubt right up until the preceding Friday; fortunately however, the Sunday was a glorious, sunny day with clear blue skies - although also with a bitterly cold wind. 111 archers had booked in, & after cancellations & no-shows 105 actually turned up. The safety brief started at 10:05; all archers were in place and the shoot started at 10:23. Over a hundred archers were \"parked,\" \"registered,\" \"catered,\" \"raffled\" and \"medalised\" and the last score cards were signed by 16:28… pretty impressive work, and thanks must go to the club members who turned up & worked so hard to make the day a success. It says something when the biggest problem on the day was running out of bacon!! GENTS AFB N. Lakes 564 Allan Caruthers N. Lakes 466 Phil Nelson N. ~ The Pentref Bowmen Winter Masters 2019-2020 ~ By David Jones. Pentref Bowmen held their final shoot of this series on the first of March, following the atrocious weather of February. As an area which was badly hit by the rain with considerable flooding we would like to send our best wishes to any of those who were also caught up in these extreme circumstances. The shoot, however, was blessed by a dry day - a rarity in this area - which made it a very pleasant change for all those that attended. As the club is hosting the World Archery British 3D championships in May we decided that in order to retain our current stock of 3D targets we would try the Gamut 2D targets alongside our paper and 3D targets. The 2D faces looked very good on the bosses, the vinyl material being waterproof is a real advantage, and they were well received by the archers. 18

The club has its own insurance so were able to welcome archers irrespective of their organization to the shoots; this meant that the final results sheet had a large and diverse number of styles represented. The competition was held over the winter on the last Sunday of each month, with each shoot consisting of 14 x 2 targets with a mix of 3D and paper faces - with each of that day’s score counting toward the total result. The scoring system for the targets was similar to the NFAS 3D and GNAS Animal rounds, with a scoring sheet given to all archers to assist them as a number of the archers had not shot an animal round previously. Their comments at the end of the shoots showed that they had all enjoyed the course and the challenge of a different style of archery. As it was an open in the fullest sense of the word - the shoot groups were a good mix of organization, bow style, age and archery characters. With an age spread of 70 years between our young champion Ruby and a venerable but still competitive Keith, there was a good atmosphere both on the course and in the club house. Guess which one is which? 19

Warm food was provided at each shoot, with Bron working like a Trojan in the kitchen to satisfy a very grateful group of cold and, on occasions, very wet archers. The trophies were hand-made by the club secretary - John Ryan Davies - and were well received by each of the winners, being both unusual and unique to the Masters. Anyone who won had to have completed a minimum of 3 competitions, and the number of awards presented showed the level of commitment by a great group of archers to come and shoot irrespective of the weather, or international Rugby games. ~ Company of 60 ~ Shoot Results 15th March 2020 Our first shoot of the year was one of the biggest ever, attracting 139 archers, as it seemed the world and his wife wanted to get a shoot under their belt before the Corona virus shut the world down. The great turn-out was welcome, not least because this was a memorial shoot in memory of our much-missed club coach Debbie Wood-Downer, who sadly passed away recently. As well as a collection on the day, half the shoot fees are being donated to charity, meaning both The British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK will receive over £300 each. Conditions for archers were challenging, and we’re not even talking about the targets. The course layers had made full use of what appeared to be strategically placed ready-mixed mud, whilst the wettest February on record delivered some interesting ‘water hazards’ for people to navigate. Both our Christmas Tree and Savannah courses had a full complement of 3Ds which kept our visitors busy long into the afternoon. They rewarded us with some truly outstanding scores... so impressive that during the medal presentation our Master of Ceremonies, Stefan, doubted people’s maths! Top marks to the course layers who battled with the weather in the weeks prior to the shoot to set some excellent shots. Praise also to Lorraine and her catering team of Amie, Claude and Roy, who kept hungry archers on the go. Shaun Bateman, Company of 60 Events Officer. Welcome to Hoods & Maids! If this feature is new to you, they are my unique way of celebrating stunning shots (both jammy & skill) that only Robin Hood or Maid Marian themselves would’ve been able to pull off. It is also my way of celebrating the shots we all either dream of hitting or are so lucky that they need scoring before they fall out of the target! We all, regardless of age/ability, appear to rack up a fair few of these shots in our field archery careers so it was also my way of trying to include more people and show off their shots and celebrate them as the stars they are – albeit having stood in a healthy blob of jam or simply from being rather a fine shot, both are most welcome here! Ricochets, Barnes-Wallis classics, lucky legs, tree shots, “in-off”s, wind- assisted, carried into the target by well-paid woodland creatures, Robin Hoods, Pickering Awards (AKA the Pines Park Special!)… ALL are welcomed with open arms! Good shooting & please do share! You’re worth it ;-) Hels 36

The lovely Debra Tullin was nominated by her husband Jeff. He told Hels: “Here's a picture from a January practice round at Forest Bowmen Field Archery club in the Nottingham area. Shot by my wife Debra at 40 yards... it wasn't a kill, but we like to think that the Wolverine was helpfully collecting our misses and playing fetch!” Lady Debra “Crufts potential” Tullin, we salute you! ;-) 37

Commenting solely with the following, much respect!! ;-) “By the skin of it’s tail!!! But I’d still take the points… … …” Top bombing big man - keep ’em coming!! All you need to do is email me, Hels, on [email protected] or get in touch via Facebook or the FAN UK website, including the following information:- * Your name and club (if applicable) * Name of the archer whose shot/s are being nominated * Where and when the pictures were taken * Any information you feel will boost your nominee’s chances of being inducted! * You CAN nominate yourself if you wish - no problem at all!! 38

“The Bowyer’s Diary” by Derek Hutchison, AKA ‘Del the Cat’! Planning ahead... First thing to mention is that the bow repair in the last instalment was a complete success. An experimental repair like that is a very useful test bed for ideas and theories and becomes another trick to have up my sleeve. I’ve a few bows to make for various friends varying from a 35# ELB to a flight Warbow, most of these will be Yew backed with Ash or Bamboo. Now that’s a fine plan if only I had the Yew and Ash, (I have plenty of Bamboo). Up in my stash I have some Yew from 2018/2019 which is ready for inspection so I carefully climbed the stepladder of doom and got down all the staves. It’s a mixed bag with 3 decent clean warbow staves, all a bit deflexed, which isn’t much of a problem in a warbow as it stops ‘em flipping over on the tiller when first being flexed. There as the odd skinny stick bow stave… and just what I needed - a big fat stave that the sapwood had been sawn off (presumably due to rot)! There was also a very curved stave which might yield a couple of nice heartwood billets too. The big fat heartwood stave was very promising as it had already been roughed out fairly square and with some careful layout I reckoned I could get a full length belly stave and two billets. The problem with my collection of random billets is trying to match up the thickness (obviously a 35# doesn’t need as much thickness as a 120#) 44

the grain direction and general quality. None of the billets are perfect, but knots can be filled at the preparation stage before gluing on a backing. Well now I had my Boo’ and my Yew, how about some Ash? I remembered the whereabouts of some quartered Ash logs cut years ago by Chris Boyton when he ran a bow making course at Celtic Harmony Camp. A quick exchange of e-mails and a phone call led to me driving over there to pick up the remnants. I was back in a flash with nice stash of Ash! There was one really good quarter log and some other scruffy bits and staves. The staves will be handy to give to putative bowyers to play with. The Ash looked really filthy, but a few strokes of the plane shoed up the lovely clean wood. I like the way that what goes around, comes around. Only the other day I’d given a newbie bowyer a 5’6” roughed out Hazel stave which he rather butchered, so I showed him a brief demo’ of the tillering process with the remaining 4’ of stave! I gave him a second which has now become a bow. I’d been slightly reluctant to give away the second stave but then I’m giving all that Ash, all good karma (I did put a tenner in the donations box for the camp and gave them a lovely old Yew character bow which was too marginal to shoot, as a wall hanger). 45

Having made a start with the Ash backings I started trimming some bamboo stats too, and sanding the Yew. Unfortunately my old belt sander just doesn’t have enough grunt to do a decent job even with a coarse (40 grit) belt, it’s pretty much worn out and I’ve been looking for a replacement for a while. There seems to be little between “hobby” sized machines of ½ horse power at about £85 and big industrial ones nearer £500. I came across one in ‘Machine Mart’ - 1hp for £310, but it was being discontinued. It’s mostly made of cast iron, there were none left in the warehouse, but they had one in Cambridge. I’m normally a tad careful with cash, but I’d had my money’s worth out of the old one and I thought I’d regret it if I didn’t go and get the last one in the shop. I expect the new model will be worse quality, sheet steel rather than cast and probably more expensive. I bought it, blimey it’s heavy... and like a lot of tools it needed some adjustment, greasing and setting up to getting working smoothly. I’ve also had to make some minor modifications to the dust extractor system as it protruded up above the belt which is no good when running a long stave over it. I’ve just given it 46

its first real test and it is brilliant, I could bear down hard on a 40mm wide Yew heartwood stave to prepare it for glue up and it sanded it flat with no problem. The improved dust collector did the job too, collecting all the dust that shot past the end of the belt. It’s already proved good investment for backed bows and laminates. The Ash backed Warbow is now on the tiller and pulling 90# @ 26” (pictured right > > > > >). I recently finished a 45# @30” Bamboo backed Yew which I’ve been told shoots arrows out like a f*&%ing laser beam! I’ve also done an 85#@28” ELB from a scruffy Italian Yew stave which had rather dodgy looking grey discoloured sapwood (pictured below). 47
