County Of Surrey Archery Association 34th Field Archery Championships 4th November 2018 Leonie George Memorial Shoot ~ Report & photographs by Andrea-Beddard-Smith ~ Alex and I had been watching the weather forecasts all week as quite often we have had bad weather for this shoot; and on our way up to the shoot we had rain but by the time we arrived it was beginning to clear and by late morning we had some sunshine. Having moved to the Isle of Wight in March this shoot was a great opportunity to catch up with old GNAS friends and that started in the car park while pulling on boots! Walking into the tea tent we found the Company of Sixty catering team of Lorraine, Roy and Paul – some may find this surprising - an NFAS club helping our at a GNAS shoot but for many Surrey archers their NFAS club is Company of Sixty. Not only the catering team but long-time CSAA field champs organiser John Pettit is also a long time member of Company of Sixty. Bows had to be inspected and mine was given a thorough look over by Chief Judge Steve Vallis and then we were ready. Due to the time of year assembly was at 9.00 am and the shoot started promptly. We had a peg with Mike Clark of Allington Castle shooting AFB and U15 compound shooter Archie Crawford from Raven. The course was very different from recent years in that the lower field wasn’t used, but we all thought that it was a much better course as it had far more shots where it was difficult to judge the distance – to me this is the fun bit of a shoot. I’m a compound shooter and many non-sighted archers seem to think compound archers want long distances, which is just not true [I can go to a target shoot if I want to shoot long distances :-)]; for me the real skill is judging the distance correctly. [P.S. For a compound shooter, short shots can be far more challenging as our sight marks go the opposite way and it can seriously do your head in shooting 5m with a 35m sight mark!!]. So our thanks to John Pettit and Surrey President Dave Morris for a great course with some really tricksy shots. We had a great day with both myself and Archie gaining national records – in fact 4 are being claimed which is a great result. My thanks go to all involved in making this a great shoot, in no particular order, Candy, Mark, Suzanna, John, Dave, Bill, Lorraine, Steve, Andrew, Roy, Paul, Tony and all the helpers on Saturday who helped put the course out. Draig Goch Field Archers NFAS Shoot 18th November 2018 Our Winter open shoot was held at our woods in North Wales (yes it is still accessible without a passport pre-Brexit!!!). More than 70 archers braved the cold on what was a sunny but typically bracing day. Our new course of 36 x 3Ds, which included wasp pegs for the first time, was testing but fair according to the archers I spoke to on the day. Special thanks go to Mark Howard who laid the course by himself - considering this is only his second year in archery we think the boy done good! Catering was provided by Liz and myself. I actually hate cooking but standing next to the warm BBQ had a certain appeal on the day! Thanks go to all the marshals who guided the competitors around and looked for arrows throughout the day and to Dave Pritchard who sorted out the scores and medals at the end of the day. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next July when we host the Welsh Champs. Dave Wilson, Draig Goch FA 22

THIS ISSUE’S COVER STORY… “Ron Pickering… repeat offender!” “Ron Pickering… repeat offender!” “Ron Pickering… repeat offender!” This issue’s Cover photo features the arrow-seeking skills of the one and only RON PICKERING!! A legend in his own right (having the most auspicious “Pickering Award” named after him), Ron has shown nothing but class & commitment to shattering arrows, irrespective of material as the poor arrow on the cover attests to; BUT this is not Ron’s 1st time… ;-) He told Hels the following about the cover shot and picture below:- “Hello Helen. This happened in June 2015. I Robin Hooded Barry’s arrow for the first time at LEFA. He’s only had it done to him twice. This one and today (15th January 2019). It was in our own woods (Pines Park Archers). There were, I think, four or five of us in our retirement club just shooting round. It’s Barry Buckley. I think I will have to shoot first in future!” 28

Dearne Valley Archery Club Remembrance Day shoot 2018 Only two weeks after the Yorkshire Field Championships, Dearne Valley converted their FITA course into a Big Game animal course on Remembrance Day. The event, formerly the Doncaster and District Field Championships, is run every year on Remembrance Sunday and attendance is steadily rising again. 40 hardy archers braved the cold weather and odd rain shower for an enjoyable day in Savin Royd woods. A minutes silence was also observed, 100 years since the end of the Great War. The Longbow competition was won by Trevor Astley from Chantry Bowmen in Rotherham, with Arrowflight's Chris Dyal and Alan Gibson in second and third respectively. The novice categories were very close indeed with Faye Collins from Dearne Valley winning the Recurve Novice Lady ahead of Denise Carr from Harworth Archers. Orsi Oliver (DVAC) took third, only 2 points ahead of club mate, Amy Law. Orsi's nine year old daughter Isabelle, also won a gold medal in the Junior Girl Recurve division - her first ever official competition! Well done Isabelle. Jeff Almond scored 266 to take the Novice Recurve Gent award and only a few points ahead of Stephen Collins in second and Rob Keighley in third, all from Dearne Valley. Rob Prince, a field archery and camping veteran took first place in the Senior Gent Recurve category with an impressive 462. Mark Tinker somehow fluked his way into 2nd place with a 422 and John Yates, shooting in his 150th year, scored 360 to take 3rd, only 2 points ahead of Jason Coles in 4th... all from Dearne Valley. Aardwold Archers from Sheffield swept the board in the Barebow categories with Martin Middleton taking a convincing victory ahead of the Bradshaw-Mann's, Matthew and Roger. Abbeydale Archers, also from Sheffield, took 1st and 2nd in the American Flat Bow category, with Patrick Hartland and Stephen Keen separated by a mere 2 points. Tracey Keen, also from Abbeydale was 1st in the Lady Barebow category. 30

Colin Fairburn from Wharfe Valley took victory in the Compound Unlimited category, ahead of Rob Greenhalgh from DVAC. Many of the competitors were either new to field archery or new to archery altogether and the overwhelming response received by the organisers was that much fun and enjoyment was had by all and they couldn't wait to try again. Announcement!! Dearne Valley will now be opening up the woods over Winter for have-a-go Open Days where archers can try their hand at either FITA Field or Animal rounds. ARCHERY ON THE BIG SCREEN Throughout the decades, Hollywood has had more than just a passing interest in archery. The studios have churned out hundreds of films (some good and some quite forgettable) featuring bows and arrows in some form or other. Here is where we remind you of some of these alongside dredging up some you will have definitely never heard of!! Twentieth Century Fox 1939 USA Director:- John Ford Starring: Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert & John Carradine Plenty of arrows flying about in this western drama! During the revolutionary war, in 1776, Fonda and his new bride Claudette Colbert leave their luxury home in Albany, NY and travel westwards to start a new life in Mohawk Valley. That’s when their troubles begin as hostile Indians, who are aided and abetted by baddie John Carradine, attack them and drive them out of their home. After many adventures, eventually life returns to normality for a while until once again, the Indians attack them. However, at the finale of the film, the cavalry arrive and rescue the settlement. The film is shot in glorious Technicolor, and one would expect from John Ford, the Director, a memorable film. Ford would go on to make other western classics – notably “My Darling Clementine”, “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and many others. DH 34

* The Pentref Bowmen * The Pentref Bowmen * The Pentref Bowmen Winter Masters 2018-19 * Winter Masters 2018-19 * Winter Masters 2018-19 * The second round of the Winter Masters competition/fun shoot was held on Dec 30th at Pentref Bowmen's Glyncornel course in the Rhondda. The weather was again kind to the archers with the ever present rain holding off for most of the day, it made for wet footing but nothing seasoned field archers could not cope with. Again it was great to see all organisations, GNAS, WFAA and NFAS represented. The competition was designed to be as competitive as each archer wants it to be with the best total scores at the end of the 4 competitions in each bow style receiving a trophy. It was also to give new and not so new archers an opportunity to test themselves over the 4 shoots to improve their personal scores. However, there is no need to commit to all the shoots - archers please come to one or as many as you can make. A wide range of abilities and ages took part with the youngest at 9 and the oldest, Cyril John of Red Kite Archers, who had at 82 made the journey from deepest Carmarthenshire to run around the course. His tongue in cheek comment that the targets should be bigger and the distances shorter have (not) been taken into consideration for the next shoot. The shoot is run on GNAS 3D distances and bow styles with some changes to scoring to ensure even the youngest or newest archer has points on their card at the end of the day. This we hope will encourage archers of all abilities to continue with their sport as nothing daunts more than an empty card. The course was a mix of paper face animal targets and 3D set out as a 12 x 2 course with the clubhouse at it’s heart, Bron Tucker once again ensuring that no one went thirsty or hungry during the day. A 10.30 start made for a easy day for those who had to travel with the vast majority of archers off the course by 14.30 and back in the clubhouse, blatantly lying to their companions about their best shot of the day. Our two European 3D competitors Mathew Thomas and daughter Amelia, who in the 2018 Europeans tested against the best and at the tender age of 13 came a very creditable 5th place in the Women’s Barebow, took the 36

Regent Archers 6th January 2019 It might have been January but it felt like Spring had arrived as we welcomed a record breaking 109 archers to our open shoot and blessed them with near perfect shooting conditions. Thanks for all the help given by Club Members in preparing the shoot in the days beforehand meant we started on time and despite the high numbers of archers we finished with plenty of time to spare before darkness fell. Throughout the day the catering team was kept busy serving drinks, hot sandwiches and cakes. Fellow club members ensured the whole day ran smoothly from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who attended and for all the positive feedback, that was appreciated by the club. We hope to see you all again at the next open shoot on 21st July 2019. We hope the weather will be just as kind to us again! Steve Dixon – Regent Archers Secretary Huge thanks to Regent club members Bob Styles & Trevor Croft for the terrific photographs they took of the day! 40

FAN UK introducing presents FAN UK introducing presents FAN UK introducing presents Sean Selby-Wells & Sean Selby-Wells & Sean Selby-Wells & Lambindra Studio, who invite Lambindra Studio, who invite Lambindra Studio, who invite you to “Meet Paul”! you to “Meet Paul”! you to “Meet Paul”! As promised from my previous introduction in the December 2018 issue of Field Archery News UK magazine, I am here once again to discuss and show you the concepts of the first target I made for club use. The idea first came to me not necessarily as Paul at first, but as a concept. I was very excited to merge my passion for crafting with my passion of archery and this seemed like a great opportunity to do so. I was fortunate to have been gifted a pile of industrial cardboard and packing foam from a friend so the issues of sourcing materials for this make were reduced with that stroke of luck. Usually I get card for free from my local supermarket and similarly an electrical hardware store for the packing foam. Other materials I used included a good pair of sharp scissors, PVA glue, Spray adhesive, newspaper, marker pens, a craft knife, paint, external clear varnish and a heated foam cutting tool. The first thing I did was to pick an image/character to work from. I went with Paul the Alien simply because I had been watching the film “Paul” and had drawn a sketch of him. I thought his tall skinny physique with bulging head would make for an interesting target. One of the trickiest parts when starting this project was to scale the image up by eye from five inches to five feet. Once I had scaled up the image, I applied a light layer of PVA glue to the card and carefully laid the paper sketch out onto it. There we some slight folds and air bubbles at this point, but once it was all stuck down I could smooth them all out flat. 46

Some readers will probably notice the blue censor in the previous image. Initially I did have Paul doing his signature ‘wave’, but my wife advised me that it wasn’t family friendly so I changed his right arm to hang by his side. Wells & Wells & Wells & The next step was to work out what size base he needed. I knew from the start that I was going to be staking Paul directly into the ground from behind, so he didn’t need too much of a base. I gave him one mainly to put a large solid platform between his feet to prevent them from being shot out too quickly. Once dry, I cut the target out and started layering up the foam gluing with spray adhesive. What I know now that I didn’t then is that it is a great idea to layer up card and foam (as in card, foam, foam, card, foam, foam, card) as it slows the arrow better and reduces the chances of through and through shots. But as you will see Paul never got that treatment as the foam I used was so thick at 1 inch depth per sheet. I did four layers on the body and five layers on his head, sloping the fifth flush with body. Other materials I used included a good pair of sharp scissors, The first thing I did was to pick an image/character to work from. laid the paper sketch out onto it. There we some slight folds and 47

Once the glue was dry I could start to cut away the excess foam and that when I really started to see my creation come to life. The next step was to tackle the back base where I wanted to stake Paul to the ground. There are many ways you can do this, but I went with solid slices of foam piled on top of each other. Before spraying with adhesive I drilled holes into every slice so that an entry port for the stake was lined up level. The problem I found with layering like this was that the foam occasionally opened up like pages in a book, so it was here that I decided to cover all of the back in card and box it in. I then had to find a strong ‘arrow friendly’ way to fix the back and front together so that the pages wouldn’t open on impact; and the most cost-effective way for me to do this was with two layers of good old paper mâché… … but now I was faced with the problem of having newspaper over my target which isn’t the easiest thing to paint over! Nevertheless, that’s exactly what I did and I painted it white; but I didn’t stop there. As I painted over all of Paul so that the whole front was the same colour and texture, then I painted the sides and back in black. 48

The next step is where the fun really starts…the painting! I had to keep reminding myself I was creating a target which was being made to be destroyed, so a masterpiece wasn’t really needed. With Paul I did a base coat of main bulk areas and then just quickly sponged in the light and dark shadow areas and brushed in light textures to give the illusion of detail at 20 yards or so. I did the same for his rock base. For the voids between his legs and under his arms I just blacked it out which really added a 3D look to him. 49

Once painted and fully dried, I gave the target 2 layers of clear varnish to seal it... and voila, Paul was ready! I had so much fun making Paul. He was gratefully received at my Club and everyone couldn’t wait to have a go at Paul! A little later in the year I made a couple of Zombies for Halloween which we named Bill and Ted. I used the exact same process but played about more with layers of card in between foam and sizes. 50
