To replace the smashed bow, I remembered I had a couple of Yew
stick bows*
in my collection, so I had a good sort out. One was about 50# and the other
40#. I tidied up the 40#, re tillered it slightly and it became a sweet shooting
35# @ 28” to replace the broken one.
Not wishing to have another breakage, I took it to 29 ½” on the tiller! It’s a
very snaky bow and the tips and grip don’t line up, however once braced it
draws on a plane with the flat belly being slightly angled to the plane of draw
on the upper limb.
The arrows fly true with absolutely no waggle and a test shot through the
“Chrony” registered 149.8 fps which is very respectable for a 35# self bow.
Pictured:
“Stick Bow.”

52
* I call them stick bows because they
are from small diameter branches, the
sapwood is still there on both back and
belly at the grip, with the belly being cut
away along the working limbs to give
pretty much a flat half a stick for most of
the limb length, and the back being the
under-bark surface.
Pictured left: “Stick Bow.”
Pictured below: “Test Shot.”

53
While I had my Chrony set up I tested a flight bow that
I’d been experiment on. It’s a Hickory Mollegabet style,
straight with stiff levers on the end of the limbs, the
belly of the limbs had been replaced with heat treated
Yew and various iteration of lever design had been
spliced on, resulting in it having two different lever constructions. It’s a shoot
through bow and needed a brush rest adding (I used a brush from a Clairol
hair colouring product) -
p
ictured above: “Brush Rest”
.
I had to shoot it using a release
aid to avoid the arrows smashing
as the pass through the small
window whilst flexing if shot
off the fingers. I managed an
impressive 212 fps, with a
couple of inches draw still
unused! I’m currently working
on an improved, more compact,
release aid.

Report & pics provided
by Jon Harrison.
Sunday the 29 of September saw Pennington archers hold their final
th
open shoot of 2024.
Following on from the success of the North Lakes/Pennington Challenge
back in June, saw us play host to 80 archers from all over the country,
some of whom had travelled over 3 hours just to visit our little wood
in the lakes. The weather was perfect, cloudy but dry, not a breath
of wind and not too hot or cold. Considering we'd had a fair bit of
rain earlier in the week, we got lucky.
The shoot itself was a 40 x 3Ds in
a rough figure of eight, meaning
the competitors could pass through
catering/admin twice to fill up on
breakfast buns and beef shin stew
and - of course - cake and a brew,
with a bit of banter with Marc
and Devs.
56

57

At the end of the day I caught up with a few mates from away who told
me they'd thoroughly enjoyed the shoot. The general consensus was
that the targets had all been laid at doable distances but there were
a few that had a bit of sneaky dead ground that had caught people
out and made range estimates really difficult... that's what we at
Pennington really like to hear.

58
So that's it for 2024, although visitors are always welcome so long
as they pre-arrange; but for us at Pennington it's time to sit down
and start plotting and scheming to create a new course ready for next
year's challenge. Thanks to all who attended and everyone who supports
our little ‘out of the way’ club.
The scores from the open
follow on the next few pages -
well done to everyone!

This August saw the first edition of the
UK 4 Nations horseback
archery competition
, with two “live” IHAA accredited stages in
Gloucestershire and Suffolk, as well as a postal match element for
those unable to travel to either of the venues.
We had 38 entries in total across the 3 tracks, a Raid 234, Tower 90
and a walk track from the Eurasian Cavalry Discipline, the Basic Chogan.
Some competitors entered all 3, some opted to do just one or two but
all entries counted towards their chosen nation’s total.
The first live stage took place in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire,
hosted by the Cotteswold Mounted Archers and run by IHAA level 2
judges Helen and Maria, aided by level 1 judge John. It was rather
warm but a quick trip to the ice cream shop helped!

65

There were some strong performances across the tracks and several
new grades achieved as a result.
A week later the second live competition was held in Suffolk,
hosted by BHAA club Alphamstone Arrows. Helen and Maria again
ran the competition, aided by fellow level 2 judge Mike. The youngest
competitor was 10 year old Emily who put in a confident performance
riding for Wales; and the most unusual bow in the competition was
wielded by Simon, shooting all 3 tracks with a Japanese Yumi!

66
Postal match entries also came in during August from Ribble Valley
Mounted Archers in Lancashire, New Leaf Triangle Horseback Archery
in Leicestershire and South East Centaurs in Kent.

The last of the IFAF National Championships which was the 3D Champs is
over for another year, the other Nationals being the Indoors and the Field
and Hunter.
Laois Archery
hosted this weekend's Champs and what a standard they've
set for upcoming competitions… the courses were technically set out
brilliantly - I especially loved the new course which was set out in a very
short time for the event, a credit to the Club.
Thank you Laois Archery members each and every one of you for making this
weekend happen.
I suppose I'll have to thank the reprobates who were my shooting buddies
for the weekend - Dave McCaffrey,
Mark Deevy and James Byrne -
for the
craic and the ‘slagging’ as we were going around the course with them…
… and did I mention that I won all
three Nationals in my category for
the second year in a row?!!

by OH Boyd.
The Bourne Retinue’s first Annual Wand shoot was held at our shooting
ground in Kirmington where the facilities are excellent. The format was
unashamedly cribbed from the one used by The Archers of the Tees
for the World Champion Wand Shoot; our shoot is to honour that tradition.
The weather held out for us and it was an excellent day with four wands
being set up with accompanying coloured pegs.

87
Pictured right:
The “Archers
of the Tees”
contingent.
The morning was taken up with welcome and registration with sherry and
shortbread and the subsequent ‘shoot proper’ for the medals took the
following form: a CAPTAIN was appointed for the colours and lots were
drawn for the coloured peg to shoot from, shooting being controlled a
whistle.
Quite simply, the most hits got the gold; however, the silver was won
by the person of the opposite gender to have most hits and the bronze
by the juvenile with the most hits - this
system gives everyone a fair chance.

88

89
After a fun shoot by elimination for
ringing a bell at 30 yards, the
competition went down to 3 contestants
- the winner being the one who rang
the bell.
Pictured right:
The last 3 in contention.
This was an event where all contestants put in 20 shillings, winner took all.
To get me back for using shillings, everyone conspired to give me a
bag full of five pence pieces... the winner requiring a wheelbarrow
to take it home!

THE BELL RINGER PURSE
was won by Dave Fisher,
who was presented with his own wheelbarrow load of shillings.

92
The presentation of the prizes, including the Marshal’s Cup was made by
the Marshal of the Medieval Society, Gary Bourne, who is also our Marshal
and our retinue is named after him.
Gary shot as an archer of the 15th century in the competition but for the
presentation he was in full regalia as Marshal, this gave the occasion much
more dignity and gravitas. Afterwards, he gave some instruction in sword
play and this was well received.
Pictured above: The Marshal demonstrates
swordsmanship to Squire Charlie.

At the presentations our juvenile winner, Charlie Dulieu, who did

93
exceptionally well matching the silver medallist for an equal number
of hits, was presented with his own longbow and arrows by
Fred Bates, who also presented the club with a bow with arrows
to be used for beginners.

94
In addition, Fred presented a wand that replicated the ones used for the
world championship to the club. This was the most generous act and it
made a young man very happy, as well as we club members.
The standard of archery was pretty good but even better was the
good humour, the banter and all of the good things that are associated
with the archery that we love.

95
We as a club have decided to hold another Wand Shoot in the spring
as well as this one, which will be an annual event. We are all looking
forward to that very much indeed and we thank everyone who took
part in this, our first Lincolnshire Wand Shoot.
OH Boyd, Captain of Archers, The Bourne Retinue of Archers.
The Marshal’s message…
It was an honour to attend the Bourne Retinue’s first Lincolnshire Wand
Shoot and as it was to be shot for in my name, it was also a privilege to
be there to present the trophy.
I had never shot the wand in this format before and found it somewhat
of a challenge. The system of increasing and decreasing the distances was
a novel idea. Howard has said that he had cribbed the style from the
Archers of the Tees - that's not strictly true, having seen the wand that
was presented to The Retinue from them. The retinue are shooting at
a wand with a scoring area that is six feet high (this representing the size
of an average man) although the wand is only four inches wide.
Shooting distances ranged from 20yds to 50yds, shooting a longbow with
medieval style arrows with hand cut fletchings at a four inch wide
target at 50yds is not easy!! If you have never shot this type of target
before I suggest you give it a try, I think you will find it most interesting.
The knockout shoot too - shooting at the hanging bell (that seemed
about the size of my fist) at 30yds - again was a challenge, but was still
being hit regularly.
I look forward to shooting it again next year.
Gary Bourne,
Marshal of the Medieval Society.
