Unbeknown to Mark, I’d had had my eye on these woods as a potential venue for a few years, but I was also aware that they were used as a breeding area for the local pheasant shoots and had not “There’s a new club pursued the idea. Mark and I set up a meeting with the farmer, taking along Scott and Madi, and posed the question of using the woods as a venue for a field archery shoot. He was, in principle, in favour of the idea but would need to speak to the pheasant shoot managers for their feelings and the timing of events, should they be amenable. They were, and we were offered the chance to hold a “trial event” in the Spring of 2015 to see how things went. We decided that an invitational event would be best, so invites were sent and accepted, meaning that approximately 30 archers would descend upon the woods for a day of field archery. There was quite a bit of work to do as we were going from The idea of starting our own club just sort of happened … it started, scratch to a shoot venue in about four weeks. We all mucked in, as did the farmer and some of our archery friends, to get the woods ready in time; we made it. Mark had set an area to help them with archery, in particular, Field Archery and NFAS. The person excellent course, everyone had helped carry out and position the targets, pegs, direction markers and other signage. The administration area, refreshment area and other facilities were all in place, we just needed the archers. They came, booked in, were welcomed, briefed on the course and safety arrangements, went out, shot the seeking coaching and tuition for his family was just a youngster, a farmer’s son. course, came back without incident and off they went home, all having said how much they had enjoyed the day. During the day, the manager of the pheasant shoot had visited us and had been impressed with the way it was being run. It’s an enormous relief when an event is done and the participants have left but there is cards were applied for and duly arrived in time for one of the shoots nearest to us. always plenty to do before the organisers can go home. Once we were ready to go home, we agreed to meet with the farmer in a day or so for a “debrief” and a chat about what next. At the meeting, we found out that everyone was happy with how the event had gone so Mark, myself, Scott and Madi decided to go ahead and set up the club. set out a few targets in a piece of woodland opposite his house. So, a couple of Once the decision was made, setting the club up was made easy by the amount of weekends later, we went over and set out a small course, a mixture of 2D and 3D information available on the NFAS website. We gathered together all that was needed, submitted it, sat back and waited. The thumbs up came through for the start of December 2016, so here we are today, our first two proper events announced and the preparations have begun. By Peter Tricker, Rednex. 51

Broadland Bowmen Christmas Pudding shoot Sunday 18th December 2016 57 archers came to sample the complementary non-alcoholic mulled wine, free sausage rolls and mince pies before shooting the \"challenging\" 2 x 18 course. After shooting round for the first time the hungry archers tucked into pulled pork rolls and the Christmas special turkey and cranberry burgers, as well as the obligatory bacon rolls. Whilst refuelling there was much talk of how the trees seemed to jump out and knock arrows from their flight towards the 24 and knock them to the ground!! And how some 3Ds were “ducking to avoid being hit”!! It was a fantastic day filled with Christmas cheer and typical banter even the sunshine put in an appearance; and at the end of the shoot the club was given the honour of presenting Logan Chapman the Cub Crossbow trophy from the NFAS 3D Champs. With the usual medals awarded after our shoot, the archers also received a Christmas Pudding each! By Mark Service. 58

Shoot Reports & Clubs’ Location Directory In response to feedback from one of our readers, who asked if it was possible to let readers know roughly where the clubs featured in the shoot reports are, we have decided to add this feature. The reader said that as the photos and shots in the reports look interesting, it’s frustrating thinking “I’d love to go there” and not actually knowing how close (or not) they are. FAN UK agreed! So - here is a list of the clubs featured in this edition (and Volume 1 of the Dec. 2016/Jan. 2017 Christmas & New Year Special), as well as the clubs advertising their forthcoming shoots and those who have already asked for their information to be shared, with their general locations for your perusal :-) Thank you to Mike Schofield for your suggestion, it is a terrific one and we shall continue to include this in future editions :-) Name Location Afan Nedd South Wales Artemis Archers Belper, Derbyshire Aurora FAC Chelmsford, Essex Avalon Archers Near Sandy, Beds. In response to feedback from one of our readers, who asked if it was I’ve been shooting field for about 5 years now, EFAA, NFAS and IFAA, in HT, BHR and AFB classes. I found a combination of shafts that work well with my various bows by carefully selecting sources and materials, matching grain weights, wood types and spine testing the shafts, then bare shaft testing of course. However, the recent closure of my usual supplier saw me looking for new materials that matched the quality and consistency that I was used to. here is a list of the clubs featured in this edition (and Volume 1 of the Dec. 2016/Jan. 2017 Christmas & New Year Special), Then, I found the feather cutting templates you supply. I’m happy to tell you that they’ve helped me create arrows that exactly match the specification I need, consistently, and I’ve saved a large amount of money in the process. Simply by buying full length feathers (again from you), using the 3” banana and 4” parabolic super fast template shapes has seen me save 60% against buying exactly the same thing from other shops that sell pre-cut feathers. The templates are really easy to use, I can see what I’m doing as I do it, and the amount of waste is almost zero. The template and rotary knife method delivers really good, consistent results every time. Thank you for a wonderful tool. Review by: Peter Barclay 71
