Pentref Bowmen 2020 Winter Masters Our Winter Masters series of shoots will this year be run as NFAS Big Game rounds, with the appropriate NFAS scoring being used. However, to make everyone feel included members of any of the archery organisations can participate due to Pentref's independent insurance. As the Winter Masters series is an attempt to include as many archers as possible, for this year we will include the NFAS shooting styles and the GNAS Barebow style; this should allow GNAS archers to ease into NFAS. Please come along and support the series, the winner of each bow style will have the best points score at the end of the series, so the more you enter the better your chance of receiving one of our much sought after prizes. Wolfshead Field Archers st ~ Sunday 1 September 2019 ~ Thank you to everyone who joined us for our last open shoot of 2019. We hope that you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to seeing you again. The weather on the day was generally good, and the couple of light showers didn't appear to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors. Once again competition in several of the classes was very close. The course comprised 39 x 3D targets and our 2D elephant, including a multi-target shot, a predator/prey target and a couple of 'wasp' pegs. An innovation for this shoot was our new 'bee' peg. Thanks to all the club members whose efforts as marshals and in the kitchen made the shoot possible. Particular mention also to those volunteers who laboured to clear the course of bracken and holly, which had grown so much during the very warm and occasionally wet weather of the summer. We look forward to welcoming old friends and new at our next shoot on the 23rd February 2020, where you'll be able to experience shooting a variety of woodland and moorland targets in the beautiful surroundings of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Welcome to Hoods & Maids! If this feature is new to you, they are my unique way of celebrating stunning shots (both jammy & skill) that only Robin Hood or Maid Marian themselves would’ve been able to pull off. It is also my way of celebrating the shots we all either dream of hitting or are so lucky that they need scoring before they fall out of the target! We all, regardless of age/ability, appear to rack up a fair few of these shots in our field archery careers so it was also my way of trying to in- clude more people and show off their shots and celebrate them as the stars they are – albeit having stood in a healthy blob of jam or sim- ply from being rather a fine shot, both are most welcome here! Ricochets, Barnes-Wallis classics, lucky legs, tree shots, “in-off”s, wind-assisted, carried into the target by well-paid woodland creatures, Robin Hoods, Pickering Awards (AKA the Pines Park Special!)… ALL are welcomed with open arms! This terrific shot was achieved by Tony, who told me: “I was shooting at Harlequins and I shot the head off their duck! It was one of Robin Hoods, Pickering Awards (AKA the Pines Park Special!)… mine...., during practice at our woods ‘gibbet firs’... I do seem to have a lot of almost misses... in my defence I was shooting my new Ben Perkins bow for the first time.” 61

This new & unique pearler is described by ‘his truly’ thusly: “All that I can say is that it skipped off the top of the target & disappeared – when we got up there it was stuck, nock first, into the boss. I am totally convinced that there is a completely new, as yet undiscovered branch of physics relating to arrow behaviour!!” I couldn’t agree more big man!!!! ;-) ;-) “So, at Archers of Battle at Crowhurst Park on Monday 9th September, the Exceptional Archery (#1) was performed by me, Paul Chittenden. This 16-pointer penetrated through the thinnest of rubber and spun left and right like a helicopter before resting straight and ripping out. Sorry Rog!” 62

Fort Purbrook ~ 2019 ~ This was the 9th two day field tournament held at Peter Ashley Activity Centre - within Fort Purbrook, on Portsdown Hill, north of Portsmouth. The hosting club is Fort Purbrook Company of Bowmen who have shot in this historic venue for over 30 years. Contact details are Charlotte Hawley at [email protected] The shoot took place on 10 and 11 August 2019. The round was a Record Status World Archery Combined round, with a 24 target unmarked course on the Saturday and 24 marked targets on Sunday. This year we set out red, blue and white pegs. Some of the archers who regularly enter the tournament had decided to shoot at the EFAC in the Netherlands this year so we had a new mixture of archers – some very experienced in field and others relative novices. The round is shot with unsighted archers shooting from blue pegs and sighted from the red, with white pegs available for juniors. 3 arrows are shot per target with 6 zone scoring. The faces are roundels of various sizes depending on distance. As in all previous years course set-up was manic as the Fort is an activity centre with a full summer holiday programme of activities for children and youth groups so we can’t set up much of the course until the date of the competition is almost upon us. The accommodation rooms at the Fort were occupied by the National Citizen Service until 3pm on the Friday, but room handover was the least of our concerns this year. The field crew from the club had worked tirelessly around the activities in the days and weeks leading up to the tournament but one thing that none of us could do anything about was the weather. As the tournament got closer I was regularly checking every online weather forecast in case I could find one that didn’t mention high winds over the weekend. As one archer commented on the lead up to the weekend “gusts of over 50mph! Oh well at least we’re not shooting on top of a hill fort… oh wait…” 66

The course was almost complete when the weather forecast changed to say that rather than a few hours high winds on early Saturday morning, which might have meant a delayed start would have been enough to keep an unchanged course, the high winds were now predicted to last all day and at times gust up to 70mph. Decisions, decisions – we considered within cancelling the shoot but archers had travelled from Finland, Jersey, Ireland and all over the UK so that wasn’t something we wanted to do. The winds were going to be a problem - one of The shoot took place on 10 and 11 August 2019. The round the archers due to shoot was stranded in was a Record Status World Archery Combined round, with a Amsterdam for the weekend – I daren’t 24 target unmarked course on the Saturday and 24 marked ask him which venue he would rather have been at! The whole club and the amazing judging team, led by Paul Clark, took the decision to knuckle down and re-design the course so that we didn’t have any shots on top of the parade ground. Course building went on until after 10pm on the Friday night, and we were all back at the Fort before 6am on Saturday to get the course finished. There was a delay to pegs and sighted from the red, with white pegs available the assembly time – but only half an hour. Something that’s great about field archery is that the judges made sure they were part of the field crew getting the course sorted so that the archers could have the best shoot we could give them; and even some of the off-duty judges that were here to shoot stepped up to help with equipment inspection on Saturday morning whilst course set-up was still going on. On Saturday we were overwhelmed with the offers from archers to help with the course adjustments that needed to be done after shooting on Saturday to get the marked distances for the Sunday course. This shoot was a triumph for the unity and spirit of the field archery community. The wind was merciless on Saturday and archers got to experience some pretty unusual shooting conditions in the 3 shots 67

that were outside the front of the Fort – kneeling down to shoot became a popular option. One of the things I noticed in the high winds on Saturday and the rain, but slightly less wind, on Sunday was the smiling faces of archers and tired field crew and judges – united in overcoming the weather to be able to do the sport we love. The field crew had a relatively lazy day once the shooting started on Saturday – the wind meant that target faces weren’t being shot out so no need to run around the Fort with new faces. So the job of marshalling archers between target 2 and 3 was a popular one as it gave us something to do! 68

united in I hope the archers have recovered from the 2 spiral staircases we got them to use on both days – we’d never used them before this year but needed to due to the new course design. As well as the weather re-design we had to change some of the circuits we use around the Fort whilst some building work is being done. I will say in our defence that going down the spiral staircases is easier than up – I know as the last few weeks have been spent getting very familiar with how many steps are in each one! The high winds didn’t stop Olly Woodward, a relative novice to field archery, claiming 2 UK records for Longbow white-peg, for the unmarked and combined rounds. The Fort has been tidied and all traces of the course have been put away. A few archers commented to our field crew that they are lucky to get to shoot in the Fort, but most of them have never shot the course – we shoot in a room, on the parade and in one of 69

the moats but not the field course – that just comes out once a year. Thank you for everyone who makes this happen and for the feedback we’ve received which makes it all worthwhile. I spent some catching up with the lovely Angel Barraza, AKA “Rojo”, and here’s the lowdown on this awesome club... from him & his fellow club members! So, who are you & where are you based? Where did the idea for the club come from & when did you set up? Hello there - my name is Angel Barraza, but almost all of my friends call me “ROJO” ’cause I’m As mentioned, I’m quite new on archery but I ginger (beard and hair). I’m from Mexico City, but saw some issues with the already formed archery arrived in Guadalajara (Tequila & Mariachi land, clubs in this area of the country, to include the 2nd most important and populated city in persons that are not compound or traditional Mexico), 20+ years ago. I’m quite new to archery, archers. People that can afford an expensive just getting into it 3 years ago. I’m a former golfer bow were relegated and also it was kind of difficult to include disabled persons, the main but with the new business I had no time to get to the course, so I got a new addiction and it’s idea is to be an INCLUSIVE archery club, where ARCHERY! Your name - Flechadores Mexico - translates as ‘Mexico Flowers’... why did you choose this name? Well, actually Flechadores is a kind of slang in Spanish for Archers. It’s not a usual way to call archers, that’s why I chose a different name that people will recognize for archery stuff. What types of shooting do you do? I practice instinctive archery the most… sometimes I use historical bows or Asian bows with thumb ring, for hunting beside my recurve bow I get a crossbow. I’m not affiliated at this moment with any association, but participate in tournaments of all kinds. 74

Brixham Archers’ NFAS 36 x 3Ds 08 Sept 2019 We had 60 entrants for this shoot, but unfortunately we had a number of cancellations due to injuries and illness: get well soon! So on a lovely September’s morning 54 archers took to our newly laid course. They were greeted with the smell of good quality sausages/bacon/eggs and coffee/ tea and vegetarian options, we were blessed with good shooting weather and the shoot got underway. The club has been working hard digging in routes and steps, so although our course is “undulating” (!) all archers of all ages were able to traverse the course and enjoy the shots……. I say, ‘enjoy the shots’……..; we created a technically tricky and testing course to hopefully test all archers’ skill, (our course has been completed by a 9 year old with a bow drawing less than 12#s), so it’s not about long stretched shots but more about finding the window, adjusting your stance, avoiding the trees and going for it! We decided to have catering in two places this year, and after the initial pre-shoot food, we decamped to a hut in the middle of the course to provide catering without any walk for the archers. This was hard but we managed and it was very well received. 84

Pentref Bowmen 3D Selection Shoot The first of the 2019-20 season 3D selection shoots was held at Pentref Bowmen's Glyncornel course in the Rhondda on the 20th and 21st of July. The weekend was also staged to provide a competition standard practice for those team members travelling to Canada. Over 50 archers many travelling long distances in what was forecast to be a very wet weekend took part in order to try to gain sufficient points to reach their respective categories qualifying score, or just to have fun It might be said that the weather was kinder to the archers than the course, as the predicted bad weather was noticeable by its absence. However, the course did set a number of problems with some targets set at distances that did not suit all, this applied to both red and blue peg archers. Thanks for some technical ( sneaky) help on red peg placement must go to Pentref's secret weapon a certain T. Hill of international fame, and Mal Witter who although in his dotage still had a few tricks up his sleeve for his compound colleagues. The course was kept as compact as possible whilst utilising Pentref's slopes and it's well-known quarry. While archers may have queried the targets no one complained about their ability to get around the course in a safe and non strenuous manner. Indeed a number of those competing complimented the course and said they had had a great weekend and would definitely return. It was a shame that this event was surrounded by so many other worthy and well known shoots both in the weeks before and in those following. This I am certain caused a number of archers to count the pennies and stopped them from attending. Travel and accommodation costs soon mount if you are a serious circuit competition archer, so hats off to you all for your commitment to our sport. 90

Jason Meehan made an excellent Lord Paramount, and watching him trying to give himself a medal and shake his own hand was a great way to end the weekend. My Mum Dolly, after 60 th years of marriage, couldn’t cope without him and passed away on 20 November 2008. As usual we will be making a collection for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, in Jungle Jim’s, and Dolly’s names. Please be generous. The collection at Dad’s funeral raised £450.00 in 2007. So far, since Dolly’s funeral in December 2008, we have raised a further £550.00 Also, anyone wanting to change group on the mornings of the shoot will be charged £5 for the privilege, and the money sent to the Surrey Air Ambulance.
